Review: Louisiana Lightnin’ Cayenne Hot Sauce

Louisiana Lightin' Hot Sauce
There’s no actual description on the bottle, but on the manufacturers website it reads: Peppers grown by south Louisiana farmers. We wait 18 months for our hot sauce to cure before we sell to our customers. Great with Gumbo and Jambalaya.

Ingredients: Selected cayenne peppers, vinegar, salt, xanthan gum.

When I first got this sauce I was struck by the brilliant red. And by brilliant, I mean blinding. This is so red I was shocked to find there was no actual food coloring added to it.

Lousiana Lightin’ is your basic cayenne pepper sauce, good for wings and anything that needs good mild kick.

So in proper Hot Sauce Blog tasting fashion, I took the bottle of Lightin’ to Sunday brunch. I hauled it to Pigalle and after that to the movies, I’m sure it enjoyed Walk the Line as much as the wife and I did.

But back to brunch…

I ordered my usual, a croque sandwich with eggs. It’s essentially a ham sandwich coated with cheese, toasted and then topped with two over easy eggs. Perfect platform for hot sauce testing.

I pulled the sauce out of my pocket after ordering and cracked it open to taste test. Nothing suspect - just a good basic cayenne pepper sauce.

The food arrived and I dug in. I poured some sauce onto the plate first, just to make sure I didn’t coat my brunch with something less then savory, but once I got a few bites down without incident I doused the rest of my plate with the sauce. I wish I had my camera with me because this definitely caused a scene.

You see, the bright red color of the sauce, combined with my liberal application of it and over easy eggs made my plate look like a fresh crime scene. I really didn’t take notice until a little kid that was waiting for a table said to her dad, “Dad, is that blood?”

He then looked over at me and stared at my plate. Soon, the folks next to them were also staring and that’s when it happened.

A tourist asked to take a picture of me and my plate.

Me & my hot sauce problem have become a tourist attraction. Brilliant.

Flavor Rating: 4 - Just your average Cayenne Pepper Sauce
Crowd Effect: 10 - Bright red color is quite a sight!
