So far it looks like tough competition, and I would have to assume the bar will continue to raise as the contest draws on. Good stuff on the enteries submitted, they look great.

Hmmm, wasn’t really planning on it, but I do have some really cool labware that could be used.

Which bottles are you referring to? If you’re talking about the ZERO’s, well, they were simple enough, as I wanted to increase the creativeness with each Batch. If you are talking about the regular sauce bottles, I was a major chem-head in high school and college, I just thought the medicine bottles were interesting, as I had never seen anyone else use them for hot sauce. Many have asked why the #3 comes in a regular woozy bottle…Well, if anyone can tell me where to get 12 ounce Boston Round bottles, I will jump on it…Not the bottle, the chance to acquire them.

Well, my bottle is pretty much made by me with the eception of the bottle itself. The bottle is an “X” 1 Million extract pimped ALL by the great Scott. It wasnt easy getting the colors that I wanted in the (Stuff that is melted. SHHHH its a secret.) My other entry I submitted isnt on here yet. Its quite an interesting one too.

Comment by CaJohn (1377) - 4/12/2006 @ 6:15 pm | [ Quote ]

The Boston Round is rather unique right now, it has been used by several sauce makers over the few years I’ve been in the business. It offers a couple of challenges for food use. 1st of all it’s a fairly expensive bottle in comparison to the woozys. It also uses a phenolic closure in most cases. They are pricey too. Automated filling equipment/cappers don’t like them very well either. The Bubba Heatin’ Sauce came in them for a while. It was made by the Scorned Woman folks, Oak Hill Farms.

I think it’s a perfect bottle for the whole Defcon theme. Very Lab-oriented look and definitely commands shelf presence. Defcon, I talked with my bottle supplier today about the sizes they stock. They jump from 8 oz up to 16 oz, he’s checking on availability of 10/12 oz for you. I’ll be in touch when he gets back to me

Comment #58:

Mrs., a woozy bottle is the bottle that looks kind of like a beer bottle. A majority of the sauces out there come in the 5 oz. variety, we actually uses a 10 ounce version with our mild (newbie) sauce.

Mrs. Ryan, it’s called a woozy bottle becauce it was first used extensively for Worcestershire sauce. It came in small (5) oz. and large (10 oz). It’s now much more widely used for hot sauces. Yes the Queen and Magma and most other sauces come in this “woozy” bottle. As a side note, when I first got into the biz, I wanted to use a “different” bottle, didn’t take me too long to find out why most people were using them. “Different” bottles cost a lot more! Then we find out that a lot of retailers are married to the “footprint” of this bottle with there shelving/racking systems. Other bottles don’t fit so they don’t buy them. Just a little of the learning curve for us. The Hot Saucer collector series bottles were much disliked by retailers because they took up so much room on their shelves, so we didn’t learn very much very quickly.

Hey John.So your saying I should take out my collector bottles to make room more sauces. LOL.

Oh yes, she’s the best sales person I have. She eve hangs with the crew pretty good as well, she keeps us crazies in check. We have a dog named Savina, I wanted to call her Chile, but lost. Then we adopted a cat from behind the kitchen, I wanted to call her Chile, but her name is Cayenne. I’m glad you got to call your dog Chile!!!

Ouch! I think the only reason we get tomorrow off is the large hispanic population at work that would not show up if we tried working. It isn’t cause they just want to be nice… They are gonna have still another protest day! argghh

My day off this week basically just makes me break even this week. THe hispanics decided not to show up too well on monday because of the protests so the work was NUTS Not fun at all cause we worked an extra shift to help make up for the lost time :(

When you run a business like this, you seldom get a whole day when you don’t have to do something. Jim C is just crazy, befor we opened the kitchen his work day could be 36 hours before he went to bed.hAt least I took some of the pressure off of him! Now it’s on us! We love it though. THings like this event in Gatlinburg give us a couple of days to try to unwind, we have a cabin down there so we have a little retreat to run off too. The cell phone still rings, but we have some control of it.

Thats good to have a place to go unwind. Gatlinburg is a nice place to do it at too. It always seemed you guys stay pretty busy. Especially if you don’t care to spend a ton on staffing for shipping and the like. So far seems like you guys are doing something right :D
