So far it looks like tough competition, and I would have to assume the bar will continue to raise as the contest draws on. Good stuff on the enteries submitted, they look great.

I just saw that! And to think I’ve been running to the front door like a maniac every time I hear a sound that could possibly be the UPS guy!
I guess I can take a few days off now.
Love the chopper Jim! Do all the honey-bear firemen ride those?
Those are all awesome.. I love it.

I thought the cutting room floor applied to those that won the contest. But the message says ALL? ha Maybe I will be able to obtain something cool
I just wanted to mention I pimped my Caldera for Christmas 2005′s post.
(Link.)
I’m going to let my daughter pimp my sauce entry. It’s going to come out way better than if I did it myself. Should be cool.
Greetings from the hinterlands of rural Utah! Only *VERY* spotty access to the email here, but to answer the question, no- not all honey bear firefighters get to ride the chopper- just the lucky ones!
Defcon- where did you get those COOL FD helmets that size??! I’ve been tearing places apart looking for those as they’d be the perfect size for the bears. You’d have more of my undying loyalty and affection if you’ll come across with a source for them

Then again… maybe not
Rescue Heroes are different.
Okay- TRACY where’d you get them?!
Spectacular country out this way Huv! Did Bryce Canyon yesterday (10 miles, 3,000′ elevation change) and doing Angels Landing tomorrow in Zion (2.5 miles with 1,400′ change one way). Ought to get me in the right frame of mind for Spring planting
Any further on this & we’ll have to take it to the off topic though.

Tell me you don’t carry a stash of your own stuff! Ever get your email worked out? If not let me know.
LOL! Guilty as charged
I don’t usually carry my stuff as I like to check out what other folks have- supporting the industry as it were
Nope- had a horrendous day on duty before I left (as is usual!!) and didn’t get the chance to follow up on it. My web guru gave a few suggestions but those will have to wait until I return- I’m on vacation!!!
MattUK – you here? I’ve got something I think you will appreciate. Email me when you can!

Well, if I remember correctly, the system automatically sends an e-mail soon as it is available for purchase. Best bet is to get up early, find the page and refresh like there’s no tomorrow until you see it.
I WONDER IF HE WILL ANNOUNCE IT ON THE BLOG AS HE HAS DONE
ALSO IN THE PAST? AT THE SAME TIME OF E=MAIL

Not a problem. You can buy the one that would have been mine, but the wife is so dead set on going to TX that I can’t touch the extra money
Here’s hoping it works cause I have my sister trying to get one for me. She already thinks I am out of my mind for attempting to buy a hot sauce that expensive! I may not know what it is but I want one I have no doubt in my mind!
that’s a fact too
poor baby, of course, I can always go enjoy texas by myself
I used to think it was weird to want something I had never seen, then I came to the blog and realized there were so many like Ryan it just became normal, I figure if ya can’t beat em join em…. your sister will come around to that thinking too
If only it were a week or two later, I’d have my bonus by then and could get it
But you know what they say…wish in one hand, crap in the other. See which gets filled first
I have accomplished my goal for tonight i am going to bed

Hi Jim, yeah, it wasn’t my submission, but man I got a good laugh out of it! At first I wondered if enlarged the label and slapped it on a larger bottle. The mask has quite some detail for being so small.
creator, are you going to pimp a sauce? I can’t wait to see all the entries, this is great fun. the ones that have already turned in their entries…. why did you choose the bottles you did?

Hmmm, wasn’t really planning on it, but I do have some really cool labware that could be used.
Which bottles are you referring to? If you’re talking about the ZERO’s, well, they were simple enough, as I wanted to increase the creativeness with each Batch. If you are talking about the regular sauce bottles, I was a major chem-head in high school and college, I just thought the medicine bottles were interesting, as I had never seen anyone else use them for hot sauce. Many have asked why the #3 comes in a regular woozy bottle…Well, if anyone can tell me where to get 12 ounce Boston Round bottles, I will jump on it…Not the bottle, the chance to acquire them.

Well, my bottle is pretty much made by me with the eception of the bottle itself. The bottle is an “X” 1 Million extract pimped ALL by the great Scott. It wasnt easy getting the colors that I wanted in the (Stuff that is melted. SHHHH its a secret.) My other entry I submitted isnt on here yet. Its quite an interesting one too.

I think he just like the Boston Round style – unique for a hot-sauce.
Huv is correct Mrs., the Boston Round is what most know as a medicine or chemical bottle. Nothing more.
The Boston Round is rather unique right now, it has been used by several sauce makers over the few years I’ve been in the business. It offers a couple of challenges for food use. 1st of all it’s a fairly expensive bottle in comparison to the woozys. It also uses a phenolic closure in most cases. They are pricey too. Automated filling equipment/cappers don’t like them very well either. The Bubba Heatin’ Sauce came in them for a while. It was made by the Scorned Woman folks, Oak Hill Farms.
I think it’s a perfect bottle for the whole Defcon theme. Very Lab-oriented look and definitely commands shelf presence. Defcon, I talked with my bottle supplier today about the sizes they stock. They jump from 8 oz up to 16 oz, he’s checking on availability of 10/12 oz for you. I’ll be in touch when he gets back to me
I need to get me a camera for this. I dont want to miss out!! I do have a cell phone camera…
I do like the Defcon bottles though. Like has been said it is a little more unique than most.

Greatly appreciated CaJohn, I’ve been searching for a while now with no luck.
CaJohn, Creator, thank you so much for the info on the bottles. now one more question and I think I can call it good… what is a woozy bottle….?
Mrs., a woozy bottle is the bottle that looks kind of like a beer bottle. A majority of the sauces out there come in the 5 oz. variety, we actually uses a 10 ounce version with our mild (newbie) sauce.
ok just so I have a reference it would be a bottle like the magma comes in? or more like queen of farts?
Creator what kind of bottle did you use? and what do you call the bottle blair uses? I am assuming and please feel free to correct me that the “woozy” got it’s name because it looks like a beer bottle, or did it come about differently?

love the santa hat, it’s cute
Mrs. Ryan, it’s called a woozy bottle becauce it was first used extensively for Worcestershire sauce. It came in small (5) oz. and large (10 oz). It’s now much more widely used for hot sauces. Yes the Queen and Magma and most other sauces come in this “woozy” bottle. As a side note, when I first got into the biz, I wanted to use a “different” bottle, didn’t take me too long to find out why most people were using them. “Different” bottles cost a lot more! Then we find out that a lot of retailers are married to the “footprint” of this bottle with there shelving/racking systems. Other bottles don’t fit so they don’t buy them. Just a little of the learning curve for us. The Hot Saucer collector series bottles were much disliked by retailers because they took up so much room on their shelves, so we didn’t learn very much very quickly.

Hey John.So your saying I should take out my collector bottles to make room more sauces. LOL.
Thank you CaJohn,
that explains alot. I was looking at our shelves that we have the sauces on and your right, the woozy bottle doesn’t take up as much room as some of the others, btw HI wicked wanza
well go me, I was feeling a bit embarrassed about asking, it’s nice to know others were wondering too
I didnt know woozy and worchestershire sauce where the same thing lol

Then we adopted a cat from behind the kitchen, I wanted to call her Chile, but her name is Cayenne. I’m glad you got to call your dog Chile!!!
Aaron, what’s a day off?
Ouch! I think the only reason we get tomorrow off is the large hispanic population at work that would not show up if we tried working. It isn’t cause they just want to be nice… They are gonna have still another protest day! argghh
Or I should say Chili…

My day off this week basically just makes me break even this week. THe hispanics decided not to show up too well on monday because of the protests so the work was NUTS Not fun at all cause we worked an extra shift to help make up for the lost time
When you run a business like this, you seldom get a whole day when you don’t have to do something. Jim C is just crazy, befor we opened the kitchen his work day could be 36 hours before he went to bed.hAt least I took some of the pressure off of him! Now it’s on us! We love it though. THings like this event in Gatlinburg give us a couple of days to try to unwind, we have a cabin down there so we have a little retreat to run off too. The cell phone still rings, but we have some control of it.

it will be better organized and easier for me

It’s squat, wide, round filled with her favorite sauce, yellow sparkly windows, but some guy wrote all over it! Is it worth having one?
Judas Priest!…I work at night and the Mrs. goes NUTS with the posting!
Mrs. Ryan….While you can get an idea of things you haven’t heard of in CaJohns line, my list of his products is still very incomplete. I still have many pics to post plus brief histories regarding each item.

CaJohn ask: Is it worth having one?
Absolutely Mrs. Ryan! CaJohns designer bottles are no different than any other limited run sauce. Get it, get it, get it! Especially if you find one at a decent price.

Not a problem…Ask away!
Had I not had so many projects interferring with my routine there would be much more to see at the site. Once I return from the “MidWest Spring Hot Sauce Tour”, hopefully I’ll have more time to invest in it.

If I am understanding all the info I have received than a bottle, like blairs or your “pimped polish” would be a collector thing, where as a woozy, would be something to collect and eat from…at least in my point of view…I don’t think I would want to open a “figurine” bottle eat the contents and have it on the shelf, it would then be pointless if it were empty.

He’s following us back to Columbus and we’re stopping at the Jungle on the way. He’s going to work in the kitchen for a few of days, then go visit Jim and come back. He’s staying here through Saturday and helping us feed the folks at WOSU during their auction (fund raising). He’s staying here through Saturday and helping us feed the folks at WOSU during their auction (fund raising). I know he has a couple of other invites, and I think he’s trying to stop and see Ron Boyle’s (Porky’s Gourmet) on the way home.
That is awesome!!!! I can’t wait for his site to be all done, I am curious to see all of his stuff and read the histories behind them, I bet he’s a riot to hang out with
I could tell you what his middle name was but I am not really interested in finding out what is REALLY in the blair bottles

Randy truly is a GREAT guy, he is very passionate about this whole hot sauce thing. We have a lot of fun at his expense, but he just goes right along with the game. You’ll have to ask him about his Joe Jalapeno signed bottle when you meet him!
I am so excited about zest fest, and meeting all of you. Not to mention the fact I love Texas.
Tracy, nothing that can’t be cured on the porch of the Caliente Cabin!

ZestFest WILL be a blast!!! It was fun meeting the small contingency that was in ABQ, but the blog appears to be turning out in force!!! Not to mention all the usual characters that hit these shows. I am not sure, he has some more ideas so I think he is holdin off for a few to make sure he has it “perfect”
I need to rally this weekend on another entry. My time is limited..chili cook-off tomorrow, and Gatlinburg next week. That gives me about 3 more days to try and come up with something that will be a winner.
wow your a busy man! well good luck at the cook off
are you guys gonna make it to zestfest?

Hey Tracy! Do you smoke cigars? I’ll have some Cuban Mistakes in Gatlinburg! Just right for sittin’ on the porch overlooking the mountains
You smoke MSK? I have some Cubans to share when you’re here. Came via Afghanistan so they’re well travelled
They’re the lighter ‘morning’ style rather than the heavier ‘evening’ ones.

Its not in these pics.
I’m sure there will be a *ton* more pics- Nick just hasn’t put htem all up yet. I know that some have probably not been submitted yet either.

I’m thinking a small animated .gif may work, kinda like Blair did with the pics of the collections he posted for the Cutting room floor contest.

I was really excited to hear about this contest, this type of thing is right up my alley. I spent 12+ years as a car audio installer in my younger years, I used to pimp rides out for a living before there was ever a Pimp My Ride show on TV. This gives me a chance to be creative again, about the only thing I miss about the old profession. This is a lot of fun regardless of what the outcome may be.
OK, where can I get just a COUPLE of the 4x4x4 display cases Blair uses for his reserves??? I can get them in bulk but dont need 25 of them. Just a couple.
These things are hard to find.

You can get some on Ebay. pmac is selling some right now. They even come with sauce, but you can throw that out if you only want the case

When you call she will ask you for which AM series they are for and she
will make sure it has the correct label for you.
I ordered one for a 4AM and it came with the 4AM label already attached.

I agree, as I spend more time here on HSB, you hear more and more exceptional stories about how they just go above and beyond your highest expectations consistently- That’s the way a business should be run. They seem to be an example for many who fall short.

You have to send them back to Blair who refurbishs them for a cost (around $50), so it depends if you think it is worth it. You would have to check with them first tho

Entry Rules & Specs:
Pimp your sauce using whatever you can find – you can even pimp around your sauce (stand, display, background etc…)
Take a picture (or 5) and send them into nick ‘@’ hotsauceblog.com with the subject line: Pimp Your Sauce Contest
Everyone can submit as many entries as they like, but only 1-2 entries per person will be selected for the final vote.
The final vote: The HSB community will have the final vote on the top 15 – 20 entries. The entry with the most votes will recieve #1, the entry with the second most votes will receive number 2 and so on and so forth. There will only be 10 winners (there are only 10 bottles).
Any of the final entries with suspected voting fraud will be eliminated.
All entry submissions must be received by 4/21 (that gives you 2 weekends to work) and final voting will be held the following week.It just says “received by 4/21″
It just says “received by 4/21″
I’m guessing that’s EST as well.
My 4/21 will be over well before yours anyway (due to being GMT) so hopefully mine will be in on time. It has been in the oven and that is all I’m saying bout it
I just hope it makes it into the top 20 now

Kind of like sniping on eBay- if you show your sauce too early, it only goes to show 1) ideas, and 2) what folks need to do to top it. I might regret putting mine in 15 minutes after it posted

I hear you Jim, but it’s all good- hopefully we are nice enough to each other here that you all won’t laugh directly into my face when you see mine, I am looking for the courteous and gracious rolling on the floor holding your sides laughs to be done behind my back and the minimum amount of “What the heck were you thinking? I’m with you guys. Though what I made was in my head the moment the contest was announced, based on what I’ve seen of the entries so far, I’ve taken a bit of a different aproach to this pimping of the sauce. I’m just hoping that it will make it to the voting. I’m sure Nick will post the ones that didn’t make the cut as honorable mentions. In either case, I hope everyone gets a kick out of it one way or another. I highly doubt there will be any negative comments regarding anyones’ bottle. Everyone that has submitted an entry has put a lot of thought and effort into it. Hell, I made the air in my home almost unbreathable, and nearly sawed off my knuckle. I can honestly say that I put my blood, sweat, and tears into this one
