ALCS — It’s a Wrap

Thursday October 21, 2004 6:00PM PT

Johnny Damon

Johnny Damon

By now, you know the Red Sox took a very big step toward eliminating the Curse of the Bambino with their improbable ALCS victory over the Yankees. The stunning reverse sweep kicked the legs out from under the Yankee dynasty and sent searches soaring. Those looking to familiarize themselves with the 80-year history of Beantown misery sent searches on “Red Sox Curse,” “The Curse of the Bambino,” and “Boston Red Sox Curse” up over 200%. Searches also spiked on Bill Buckner (+216%), one of the most infamous victims of the curse.

But enough with the history. Searchers were also after the diamond inspired action of one of the Red Sox brightest moments. Queries on Game 7 hero Johnny Damon were up 132% and searchers wanting to glimpse his luscious locks sent “Johnny Damon Pictures” up 140%. Game 6 savior Curt Schilling gutted out the pain on the mound and pitched his searches up 105%. Other players sliding into search included the highest-paid karate chopper in baseball, Alex Rodriguez (+172%); cornrowed and rubber-armed Red Sox pitcher Bronson Arroyo (+59%); and midget-toting Sox legend Pedro Martinez (+57%).

The dramatic rise of the Sox and the stunning collapse of the Yankees touched off so many searches, we couldn’t leave any stranded on the base paths. Here’s a full look at the horsehide madness inspired by this classic series:

evenly matched in searches over the past two weeks — until that fateful Game 7:

  • Baseball Rules (+77%)

  • Boston Herald (+74%)
  • Red Sox Radio (+68%)
  • New York Daily News (+63%)
  • Baseball Playoffs (+61%)
  • Sons of Sam Horn (+60%)
  • Red Sox Wallpaper (+56%)
  • WEEI (+51%)
  • Jason Varitek (+50%)
  • Derek Jeter Pictures (+45%)
  • Red Sox Nation (+92%)
  • Ronan Tynan (+84%)
  • Boston Globe Sports (+83%)
