BBQ Sauce Review: Denzel’s Smoky Stout Bar-B-Q Sauce

Denzel

Along with the condiment caddy Denzel sent me, he also included a bottle of his latest BBQ sauce. Although I don’t have a BBQ (condo living) I have the next best thing, my Calphalon One grill pan. Now that the balcony has been redone and is nice and comfortable this sucker is getting a lot of action.

There are a lot of great BBQ sauces out there no doubt. Many we hold true and dear to our hearts and have become our “secret recipe”. If there is one BBQ sauce I can encourage you to try this summer it would be this one. The only downfall is that it doesn’t come in a bigger bottle as this will last you one good application for a family meal.

Denzel has always had attractive looking bottles so we won’t get into details about that. Let’s focus on the sauce.

Denzel

Ingredients: Tomato, apples, vinegar, Crannog Stout Beer, onions, molasses, brown sugar, chipotle peppers

I hope you took a look at the ingredients list. There is one component that is missing that you will find in most BBQ sauces. High fructose corn syrup. Instead what you see here is what you get. And each flavour stands on its own. The other notable is that the molasses is very subdued in sweetness but gives the sauce a very decent stick quotient and makes this BBQ sauce have perfect viscosity. Most notably are how the Crannon Stout beer and chipotle peppers play together. The add a lot of heft to this sauce and make taste heavy and smoky. The aftertaste is extremely satisfying and rich.

As for heat. Well there isn’t any. Nor is there supposed to be. This is BBQ sauce at its best (sans heat). Do yourself a favour and give this one a try.

Packaging 9.5/10
Aroma 9.7/10
Appearance 10/10
Taste 9.8/10
Heat 1/10

mmmm beer and bbq sauce :) I wonder what type of stout it is? That is just the beer nerd in me coming out. I bet it is an irish dry stout if I was to wager a guess. Oh well I hope to get me some of this soon!

HI Aaron, it’s made from an organic stout made by Crannog Ales in Sorrento BC called the “Backhand ofGod”. It’s a real nice beer with hints of chocolate and coffe. I’ve been working on it for quite awhile. Your guess is bang on it’s made in an Irish style.
Cheers

Yeah Ok I need to order some of this :) I don’t really see on the site where it is available. It is about time I got some Denzel sauce in my fridge anyway :) What do I need to do to acquire some of it?

Hi Aaron,
Just shoot me off an e-mail, and I’ll hook you up. The Stout isn’t up on the website yet but I’ve got lots.
Cheers,
Denzel
