Blair's 2007 Halloween Reserve

Dear ChiliPal,
Today it is with all my passion and excitement that I have the pleasure of sharing my most amazing reserve EVER….My 2007 Halloween! It has been two years in the works…..the glass is custom made from Italy, and that’s not a label you are looking at. The glass has been hand carved (following my design), and, as if that wasn’t enough, I decided to recruit 12 of the nation’s top artists to hand paint into the glass. So, each bottle is truely unique. Now….let’s keep going. Of course, my famous black and orange Italian resin seals it with a 24k gold dipped skull atop.

But, I did not stop there. Inside this amazing bottle is what’s even more unreal. Through my Biocap research, I have been working with pharmaceutical capsaicin extract. These bottles are filled with ultra-pure medicinal and mega-rare 1.25 million scoville units of fury. All things combined, this bottle is the dawn of a new era of my reserves, and will be the crown jewel to your collection.

Enjoy it and FEEL ALIVE!
- Blair

I would just like to say-NO THANKS. $200.00 a bottle = $59,800.00. Not a bad days wage. I hope every one that sells down the road brings $1000.00 apiece so that 299 people can say “I told you so”. Use to be if you spent $75.00 with them you got something free-didn’t and still doesn’t apply to reserves. Just made up mind to sell all my Blair’s. Anyone interested send me a PM. I’m done.

Nice bottle, and much better than last year. Just seems a little pricey and over hyped to me. Maybe next year?

Just got mine. It looks beautiful, and I’ve always liked the Halloween Reserves. I don’t know if I’m going to sell or keep it, but I want to at least have the option of doing so. Looks like a beautiful bottle.

And, not to be stupid, but….if Blair wants to charge $1000 or $10,000 per bottle, he has that right. He’s merely ASKING for that much. What’s wrong with that? If you don’t want to buy, then don’t, but there’s zero reason to dog someone out for merely ASKING a price for a bottle (no one’s forced to buy the product). Not really following why people would get mad because of something like that…. :/

just to clarify Ryan, i didnt bash him at all. i just like the fact that people can say theier thoughts and beliefs on this blog.

you are right, he can charge whatever he wants. to ask 200 bucks, there must be a reason… maybe
2 years of research/design
paying 12 artist to paint 25 bottles a piece
the cost of shipping engraved bottles and resin from italy
gold skulls
time and materials
etc

i heard it through the grapvevine that the majority of his profits for his company doesnt even come from the reserves. wether thats true i cant say. just what i heard.

$199 a bottle is expensive but look at the work that goes into it. In the collectible hot sauce market, everyone makes money - the manufacturer, the re-seller and the collector (who in turn sells the bottle for a profit). And you know what, the manufacturer probably makes the least out of everyone on the list.

$199 for a piece of chilehead art is fine by me.

Hey Ryan don’t get me wrong I really do like the bottles I have and I’m not “Dogging” anyone. It’s my opinion and trust me I am opinionated. I yes I have the money to spend as I see fit and I chose not to spend it with them. Not to be a smart a$$ but maybe you’ll have better luck selling this that that T-99. So Ryan, who’s mad? I’m not. Like you say, you wanna play, you gotta pay. I don’t wanna pay, so I ain’t gonna play.

I didn’t buy one last year. Not one regret in that decision at all. Just what I’m lookin’ at from my point of view and opinion is that it’s over priced and has been over hyped. I’m sure there was a lot of hard work involved with it, and I don’t mean to take away from that at all. But what it was hyped to be vs. what it actually turned out to be to me is just a little disappointing. Maybe my expectations were too much, or I just had a very vivid imagination of the possibilities of the outcome, but either way, I don’t want it, I didn’t order it, and I won’t get it. My choice. The same choice everyone else had that decided to get it and comment on how much they like it. So I’ll darn well say why I didn’t get it. My opinion’s just the other side of the coin. But an opinion that I think should be heard, along with everybody else’s.

But mad? Give me a break. Mad is when I order a $200 bottle and recieve it leaking all over everything, call the manufacturer and am told that’s normal, sorry. That might just piss me off a tad.

But where was the hype? Who knew about that bottle before it was available? If this bottle (Halloween ‘07)would have come out without a word said to hype it up, then maybe, just maybe it would have a little more wow factor to it.

Seriously, $100 is tops for me on any bottle. Only one bottle I’ve ever paid more for.

I’ve got plenty on my shelves that I’ve paid ten bucks or less for that you couldn’t give me every ‘07 Halloween made to replace ‘em. Every one of ‘em has just as much hard work and dedication to quality in them as any of the ‘07 Halloweens. So yea, the Halloween’s pricey. To me. But it ain’t priceless.

I’ve listed it five times, but I’ve asked $400 for something I paid $150 for. I could’ve sold it to six separate people for $300-$320 but I turned it down. I want at least $350 for it, and I don’t HAVE to get rid of it….it’s just BONUS if I sell it….I’m keeping #17 for myself. …and my mother’s company pays for all of the eBay listings, so it’s no skin off my back to relist it (they have a big eBay budget). Not sure what the “nuff said” comment was about, like you “got me” or something….because you didn’t at all. Not a very cool thing to say bro.

Well I got my order in about as fast as the site put the picture up. No conformation yet, which is always troubling, but I am sure it will come soon enough.
As a business man, selling products to the public, I have come to realize that there is such thing as a specialty market. I can sell my Brisket for as much as I’d like, but that does not mean that I would sell any. Obviously, I sell my Brisket as compared to my competition and what the local market will bare. However, my beef jerky and specialty BBQ sauces are a different story, special product merits special pricing. The same is true for businessmen like Blair and Cajohn who are out their selling their “special” bottles. Their regular sauces, I find comparable to others on the shelf. But their collector’s items, especially those with such a high manufactures cost, well who’s to say, I’ll buy them anyway because I am a collector and sometimes being a collector is expensive. I say charge what you like and if they don’t sell, like these won’t heh heh heh, well thats another story.

Comment #42:
Comment by thakswet (529) - 10/4/2007 @ 2:19 pm | [ Quote ]

just buy the bottles you want to buy. I think this one is quite unique, like the Caldera…and you don’t see those up for sale very often.

I’ve eBay listed my #1 multiple times, and received some nice offers, so I understand Ryan’s sticking to his guns about a certain price he’s willing to sell for.

As for the WOW factor; I’m impressed. I put my order in and received confirmation at 12:06. I didn’t even hesitate this time.

As for the price, well…whatever. It’s an investment/collector’s item/art piece. Every bottle I’ve purchased, excluding the 4AM, has been thought of as an investment. So, no matter the cost now..in about two months; you can make money…even if it’s only 50 bucks. Better than keeping the money in a saving account.

Not to take anything away from Blair and Cajohn, because I do agree that they make the best collectibles out there and have much love and respect for both makers. I do think however you’re selling newcomers short.
The Tamales and FKS have a couple of spiffy collectible items in my opinion. Danny Cash as well we can’t forget him.
I spent 6 months conceptualizing, working on my reserve sauce, the packaging and the waxing. Oh yeah, and people got to try what was in the bottle too. What a concept.
I lost quite a lot of epidermis doing the waxing being a first timer and all and have the scars to prove it.
I thought we all did pretty good with our efforts. I guess I was wrong.

Not selling anyone short by any means - I appreciate and can empathize with the work that all makers put into their concepts. I was making that point more towards the “higher” end pricey items that people seem to get their panties in a twist over. My earlier comment just came out wrong I guess.

In fact, I think the newcomers have to put a lot of thought & effort behind their new stuff then anyone else - for a couple of reasons: It’s a learning process, it’s hard to be different and it’s harder to do when you have less capital to work with, you often have less people to help get all the bottles together and they are often harder to sell (at first).

Nick,
No offense taken, I’m just sayin’.
Blair and Cajohn raise the bar with every new release, that keeps all of us upstarts on our toes in hopes that someday, with any luck, we’ll be on their level.
This bottle looks awesome, and with the Canuck Buck being on par with the Yank Bank, it would be a great bottle to add to the collection especially for us Canadians.
For me, collecting has taken a back seat to buying diapers. Hmm…maybe I should start collecting dirty diapers? Nah, that would just be weird…..

$200, $100, $2000, who cares, hot sauce was meant to pour on food. Keep your collections, I want the sauce. I can buy fancy bottles and glass at the Renassiance Faire. I can understand the profit investment, that is all good, but I am about the bottomline. Belly must be happy :D

Awww (yes awww is a word if your from Jersey) UB don’t be sad.
I agree in the respect that us littler guys really do have to go “above and beyond” so to speak when we have the “higher ups” such as Cajohn and Blair setting the bar so high. There are some beauties out there.

In my opinion, you surpassed any first timers version of a collectible if I may say so myself. So did the Cash crew ( and at a great price), as well as FKS ( still the prettiest colored wax ever). Great concept with the tasters and loved the bagged and tagged. So morbid!! hehe Anyway….

Its all in the eye of the beholder I spose. A collectible to me is but a rare thing, a delicate flower hard to come by, something you wait months, years, a lifetime even to see and hope to get your hands on. Its something you have to search for and be blessed to find. ( are we likin the drama?). This being said…

Some may have no problem shelling out $200, $300 at a clip month after month for collectible after collectible. This is typically not the case though. Perhaps some would be more likely not to be aggravated and just flat out sickened by the whole collecting concept if it were in fact something really special. I feel like the numbers of collectibles has gotten WAAAYYY out of hand. This probably makes each collectible worth less and less likely to be scooped up cause you know another is right around the corner and maybe you’ll just get that one instead.

Sometimes the higher prices are justified, sometimes they’re not I’m sure. As a manufacturer who put out one of the higher priced bottles, I know that its not a huge money making idea once all is said and done. Will we do it again, of course but not anytime soon. Not by a long shot. Not for that price. Do we want to put out something really unique and special from time to time as a sort of earmark for our business and our success? Absolutely. Do we want to put out a collectable everytime the wind blows, hell no. My way is no better than any others, like I said earlier, its in the eye of the beholder. I just know what I like. I like the newbies trying hard and SUCCEEDING!!!!! Keep it up!!!! I also like the bar being raised by the more experienced folk in the biz.

Eat it, collect it, smash it, oh wait no don’t do that. However we all express ourselves as chilheads is up to the individuals. I just don’t want to feel insulted as a consumer by YET ANOTHER collectible.

Hey UB, thanks for appreciating all the hard work THT put into our collectible bottle! After seeing yours by Kristi’s, I regret never have getting a set for myself! Not to mention how nice FKS bottle was for WOF at Jungle Jim’s this summer. And I do have most of DC’s collectible bottles.

It is so true on how so called “new comers” have to put that little extra piece of themselves into a collectible project to make it stand out from the rest. And it does show in the finish pieces. But as I have seen from some of the “old timers” and some of the “new comers”, we have all been keeping each other pushing the envelope in this hot sauce world from collectibles to new sauces. And in each great piece, you can most definitely see a piece of that particular manufacturer in the completed project. The love of all things hot always shines through!

Now as a collector myself. I get what I want, if I can afford it at that time. Sometimes I miss something because my funds are not unlimited and are needed in other areas of my life. No one pressures me to get something I don’t want. And I would think that most collectors are the same. They get what they want. If you don’t want it, don’t buy it. If you want it, buy it. Very simple. As long as your purchase does not affect your financial responsibilities, whether it be a $10,000.00 bottle or a $2.00 bottle, all is good.

I’ll agree with ATK. Not me, not for .99.

Cajohn is the top dawg of hot sauce in my opinion. I’m in a huge minority, but I have watched prices rise and fall, go crazy, rise and fall. It seems a cycle like everything else. It’s worth what you are willing to pay. I kept a small fraction of my collectible hot sauce when I parted it out on ebay. CaJohns, Short Bus, CapeFear and Mild to Wild are the only ones I kept. Why? because they were given to me by great people during great times and have great memories. You could not offer enough cash to get me to part with them.

IMHO, thats the way to collect. Not to make money, but fond memories.

Yep, and it SOLD OUT IN LESS THAN 6 HOURS” too…
And Im sure there are many of us that wish it was us that made / sold that in a day. We can all speculate how much we think this cost to make vs what the asking price was. It isnt ALL profit as there are costs involved, but it still is up to the manufacturer to set the selling price. Supply and demand, right???

Im not siding with Blair here. There has been an Explosion of collectibles the past year or so. It seemed that every time you turned around it was another chunk of money to keep up with it. But at the same time, it also made collecting and owning it all harder and causing not everyone to own the same thing. So in that respect, its kinda good that people need to buy, sell, or trade selectively to get the bottles they really want in there collections.

If you had enough extra money to buy all the collectibles, would you really value your entire collection? Why would it be special then? Except for the issue of the lower numbers, that would kinda seperate it a bit. Well, maybe thats a dumb question. Its like saying would all the money in the world make you truly happy. But, Im sure it’d help ;-)

I, like others, have alot in my collection. And its most of the smaller “regular” bottles I value, and remember getting. Mostly where I was that day, and why I decided to buy it. Kinda like looking at a photo album in a cheesy way. Or it can just be because I liked the look of the bottle. There are collectibles I value too. But collecting, its what you want out of it, and what you want it to be, and really, what you can afford, or are willing to sacrafice for the bottles you really want on that shelf.

In this case, I like the look of this bottle, regardless of all the thoughts on the “too many overpriced collectibles”, and who Im paying for it. Or if its too much $. If you drill down and ask me that question, I would say yeah, I like its look. I dont have $300 to spend on it even if it wasnt sold out. If I had alot of the things I want to get in life, and had the extra $, I think Id have bought it. Because I liked it, thats all.

So whatever you opinion on it, its cool to say it here. But even in this over-loaded collectible market, it seems that a collectible wont sit and collect dust. If its out there to buy, someone will buy it. There have been a few exceptions…lol but that a whole different topic ;-)
