Cheffy’s Hot Sauce Collection

With the Collector’s Corner weekly posts it was suggested that the HSB add a section with images of actual collections. So if you have a hot sauce collection you’d like to show off, send it to nick ‘at’ hot sauceblog.com and your collection will be posted for all collectors to drool over.

First up is a small sampling of Cheffy’s expansive collection.

Cheffy's Collection

Cape Fear VooDoo Hot Sauce

Blair's Early Edition Reserve

I was also lucky to get a Cape Fear Voodoo hot sauce that was even mentioned. I have a question though. In that same purchase i received a bottle of Blair’s sauce I have never seen befor in any other auctions or websites. The bottle is spuare with a white bottle top. It is signed and has a Blairs square label on top. I emailed a picture of it to extreme foods and they said that though they don’t offer values in the second or thrird party markets, that it was a pr-AM bottle that he made for conventions and that they thought it would be fairly rare. If anybody knows anything about this bottle or would like to see a picture please let me know at dedeckerc@hotmail.com.

I have always kept mine in a dark place (Blair’s reserves and all extracts). I’d love to display them out in the open with all of my others sauces…Just too scared something may happen.

Comment #9:
Comment by ryan (2615) - 1/12/2006 @ 7:40 pm | [ Quote ]

as long as they’re not opened they should be ok. If they’re going to go bad, they’ll go bad refrigerated, kept in a dark place, or not. I say throw caution to the wind and show off your obsession…I mean hobby…and be proud of it.

What causes sauces, especially the brighter colored ones, to darken is oxidative browning. It doesn’t mean the sauce is bad, just oxidizing. Take a bite out of an apple & come back to it in ten minutes- you’ll see the same thing. Keeping them in the dark won’t really stop tis or even slow it down appreciably. Stored in bright sunlight, sauces can even ‘bleach out’ like fabrics. The sign a sauce is truly going bad is ‘fuzzies’ or ‘fizzies’.

I was unaware that the angry outbursts on the blog were a recurring theme for nat. Therapy does seem like the right choice.

All the more reason NOT to let it get to you, because someone says something for shock value, to make a name for themselves, or out of just plain ignorance should not distract you from your normal routine. I have not had a chance to taste your products as of yet, but I have done my research and read every post on them and have seen just overwhelming praise in so many threads that I can’t wait to get a hold of them. In my opion the voice of the majority out ways the silliness of one.

How I meant to finish that was: “In my opinion the voice of the majority outweighs the silliness of one.” Sorry I got a little fustrated at the whole situation and fingers went faster then the brain.

Thanks Vic, I actually welcome comments made such as the one made by nat. How could we ever have a movie/book written about the hot sauce world if we didn’t have all types. We were missing the character with turrets, thats pure entertainment! It’s all good. I’ve had seven days off of work and still have another three to go so nothing can bring me down! Have a great 4th!

Vic, you rally gotta try their sauce! It’s not an extreme sauce as far as heat, but man the flavor! The only drawback is the bottles, need larger ones. The 5 oz ones seem to empty at a very fast rate! ;)

I said it here first,
12oz. bottles will be the new coming trend in Hot Sauce!!!
With all the flavor in todays sauces and thicker too, chileheads are applying more sauce to their foods. The 5oz. just aren’t big enough anymore.
More sauce to enjoy for the money!!

Ok nat. Just a question, or two.
Have you tried the sauces you mention yet? And, all of them?
Or are you making a generalization based on one, or perhaps the names you may not care for…

I question someone into hot sauce that cant find any of their (THT) flavors not tasteful ;-)

Isnt it hard to find these over in the UK? You order all these online?

Just curious cause usually if we here dont like it, we just wont buy it, and dont scrap all over it (unless its cackalacky…he he)

(nat don’t take it the wrong way, I am just teasing) we here have fun riding people that say things sometime against other bloggers. All in good fun, but maybe find a softer way of giving a harsh opinion in the future buddy. Keep posting I like reading your comments in all the threads I havent visited in months sometimes! :)

Only problem is, retailers hate them! (don’t fit on their hot sauce racks) So they don’t buy ‘em. Great for chileheads, Bad for business. But if you don’t mind not selling to stores, have at it! If they do buy them, you end up with the BBQ’s & Wing Sauce.

I feel a change in the wind, if chileheads are asking and demanding them. Then the stores will conform to accommodate their customers wishes. Why wouldn’t ya want more sauce for your money?

BTW, did I tell you jersey girls years ago I worked at Monmouth Beach? I was in college and spent lots of time in Asbury and Long Branch and all that good stuff. What a great time that was!

You can’t beat the Jersey shore. Just got back yesterday myself. Weather was great, got fat eating funnelcakes and cheesesteaks on the boardwalk, it was the best.

I’m a Texas boy through and through, but being an Army brat, I’ve lived everywhere. Jersey was great. Some of the best summers of my life!

I feel a change in the wind, if chileheads are asking and demanding them. Then the stores will conform to accommodate their customers wishes. Why wouldn’t ya want more sauce for your money?

-Scotty B

I’m not saying the chileheads don’t want them, we tried several bottles when we first started because I wanted the line to be “different”. It was explained to me that the hot sauce had to fit the shelves, so it wasn’t interesting to MANY buyers. They have invested lots in there shelving and racking, so they’re not going to change. I’m not saying you shouldn’t go to the big bottle, just preparing you for what your going to hear from the buyers. They are also looking for price, bigger bottle means more cost which equates to a higher price (cost to them). There’s a lot more than good tasting sauce to succeeding, I’ve had my share of “conforming” to the buyers whims.

So Ryan if we ever come out with a beet flavored hot sauce we could put your name on the “disgusting new flavors ” newsletter as well? lol Let me ask you, have you and the mrs. ever gone to the anaheim show? I know you’re over that way.

Can’t say that we have. I got into this frenzy only a year and a half ago. Zestfest will be our first show. If you do wind up making a beet flavored sauce and put my name on it, you have to let me design the label :-P

Fantastic display! I’m in the planning stages for my own collection display. Does anybody know where I might locate Century Hot Pepper Sauce? They made two recipes; 1 Habanero and 1 original and would love to purchase some of each. I found it on Firehouse.com but apparently they are out of business. I have only seen it mentioned in other sites, always with a great review!
