Nice review as always Justin. This label is the most unimpressive label I have ever seen on a salsa jar. I think it needs a little G8rman makeover. If I saw this jar on a shelf without reading this review or someone else telling me about it, there would be no way I would be buying it. A Farmer’s market? A different story, but in a store with other fancy schmancy jars surrounding it, well no. They say the first 3 rules of business are location, location, location. The 4th one has to be appearance. At least they are from Minnesota, so they must be Vikings’ fans. The next time I am up there I will have to hunt it down at Kroegers.

i gatta agree, this post has 63 comments and all the surounding posts have 5 or 6. the reason for it is that blane commented in this post, if he commented in another post the truth would of attacked him there and that thread would have 60 comments. the only way that any reviews get any comments here on this site is if this happens. go back and read any other review that has 60 comments and it will be the same thing. now go to ttf and read any review because they all have alot of comments and there isnt any of this and its all friendly.

I have a little story about the first time I saw BLANE. Two years ago at the Fiery Foods & BBQ show in Albuquerque, there was a guy walking through the crowded lobby carrying some limited edition hot sauces. Another guy accidentally ran into him and one of the sauces fell and broke. The guy with the now broken hot sauce began belittling the guy who ran into him, calling him names and acting like a real jack @$$. It turns out that guy was BLANE.

So don’t tell me really a nice person. Nice people don’t act that way and they don’t post the kinds of mean and harassing comments he is well known for. The guy is a prick and he deserves to be banned from this site until he grows up and acts like the adult he’s supposed to be.

That’s not the way it happened “Dildo”. I was helping Blane carry his bottles when it broke. It fell because he was carrying more than he should have been. I had offered to get that last box, but he said that he had it. It was just a slip, nobody bumped him. And what he said was “Damn, there goes a $300 bottle!” . In reality, it was maybe a $10 bottle, but everyone in line didn’t know that. The look in everyone’s eyes when they heard ‘$300 bottle” was priceless. Me and Blane laughed about it all the way back up to the room.

Now I won’t go as far to say that you’re lying, but there wasn’t many times that I saw you that you didn’t have a beer in your hand (as did a lot of folks), so maybe your recollection is a little foggy. But either way it’s not what happened.

As for what Justin said in Comment #’s 64 & 65, he’s dead on the money. Well said Justin.

Regardless of how right or wrong or petty or on point people are, it seems to do no good to say anything. TTF was started BECAUSE of the BS that you and others perpetuate here. You keep talking like there’s TTF people, and HSB people. The only place I hear that, or read that rather, is here on the HSB. Go back to TTF you say. Take a look at the top commentors lists. The people on TTF ARE FROM HERE!! It’s the same people.

Here’s the difference. One site allows and welcomes positive AND negative coments. One doesn’t. One site treats it’s visitors fairly and without bias. One does not. One site welcomes new visitors with open arms when they post. One does not. One site provides an open off topic area that’s easily accessible to it’s visitors, one does not. One site listens to their visitors suggestions on reviews and implements them immediately (not after 2 years), one does not. Now I could keep going, but I won’t. I could say which site is which, but I don’t have to.

Now, as for this thread, For a website to ban one person, but not the other that’s involded is just another BS cop out. It’s unfair and biased. Deleting comments without notification, comments thrown to moderation without notification or explanation, it’s all the same crap that led to people here deciding to do something themsleves. when i wrote my first review i hadnt been apart of hsb for very long, i had commented in the boiler room a few times but never on a post and i really didnt know anyone or anyone else know me. i saw nicks post that they where looking for reviewers and i knew thats what i wanted to do, but figured there wasnt much chance that i would be excepted, i wrote one up anyway and when nick excepted it i was really excited about it, i even told all my friends and famaily only for them to get on and read your comments about how there are no good reviewers on the site and how crappy the review was. i was seriously ready to call it quits untill people like blane, and dk, and sam, and kristi, and ethan, and jim campbell, and yes even gildo (the only person in the list thats not a regular of ttf and probably only standing up for me because you dissed all the reviewers not just me) gave me positive comments and encouragement to stick with it. so you say that the only time you get on here and bitch and act like an a$$hole is when its against people with a bad attitude? your full of $hit!

It isn’t as easy as it looks. If you think it’s easy let’s see what you’ve got. I look forward to seeing more reviews, and exciting news on new products , recipes, and such.

If you look back at Justin’s first review he was disrespected and insulted. Look for yourself. I fealt soo bad for him, instead of helping him to do a better job , he was nearly pushed away from doing a service to us all.

I check out at least 3 blogs every day that are hot sauce related. I look forward to it, everyday. If for some reason ie. camping, out of town, whatever I look forward to catching up on those things I’ve missed. I really hate it when it’s name calling and negativity.

The BS on this thread started on the 7th. Today is the 10th. Why did it take three days to send those involved an email? You can’t put this all on those involved. There has been a complete breakdown and failure of the moderation on this thread from day one. No immediate emails sent to the offending people to start with, then allowing unfair and biased moderation which consisted of deleted comments, and a ban of only one person involved. Lack of immediate action on your part is the main reason for this thread going over 100 comments. If it would have been nipped in the bud from the beginning, then there would maybe been whet, 15-20 comments? And mostly on topic. And the failure to provide a current and easily accessible off topic area would keep a lot of this stuff out of the main threads.

So Nick, your comments about not having the time to babysit this site says a lot. It’s not babysitting. It’s called site moderation and it’s part of running an “open to the public” website. Moderation can easily be done in a fair and non abusive manner without taking a lot of time. Yes, it requires time, but so does the normal operation of this site.

Thanks for taking the time to review our product. It’s unfortunate that many of the other comments do not pertain to the salsa. Throughout the posts there were a few questions and statements about the ingredient list and label. Here are a few quick points about each.

In addition to the other peppers in the salsa we use a banana pepper that is pickled and the preservatives are ingredients in the brine that they are packed in. So we are not actually adding any of the preservatives that are listed. (ingredient in an ingredient)

We purchased the recipes to this salsa last September because we were fans of the product and had been buying the product for years. “Curt” and his wife had been making, selling, and distributing the product themselves for years and were selling approximately 80,000 pints a year in the Minneapolis / St. Paul metro area and in the western portion of Wisconsin near their home. The label they used was nothing more than a black and white Avery nametag label so our decision to leave the label black and white was done so to maintain the brand identity in the existing stores. As for stacking up against “fancy schmancy” brands you would be surprised as to how well your eye gravitates to a black and white label with the salsa as a backdrop in a sea of colored labels. We’re not opposed to changing the label at some point if need be but for now it suits our needs and customers immediately identified it as Curt’s Salsa when it returned to store shelves after being gone for nearly 6 months. Anyway, I’m sure everyone is bored with the story.

You’re correct about all of the off topic comments. If only there was another place to post them. There’s no current and easily accessible off topic area here, so unfortunately stuff like this happens from time to time.

One thing I will say, due to the off topic discussion in this thread, there’s been a lot of traffic here to see who’s got what to say. So there’s been a good amount of exposure for the product as a result. So there’s a “benefit” for your product right there. There’s never any guarantee that a review of a product will be beneficial anyway, so to say that there’s no benefit due to the off topic is a little unfair. The benefit may come in an unexpected way, but that’s just part of rolling the dice by submitting the product for a review to anyone.

The one thing you have to remember, it’s a review. It’s not advertising. A good review can be good advertising, but the real purpose of a review is to inform the consumer of the product in an unbiased, real world use. It’s not solely for the benefit and pleasure of the manufacturer. That’s what advertising is for.

All the best to you Scott with this salsa. It’s on the radar of plenty of people now thanks to a great review by Justin. I know I will keep this product in mind when I’m once again shopping for salsa. Looking forward to trying it.

Scott, I am deeply embarrassed at any part I took in making this review go from bad to worse. I can’t speak for the others, but I been bothered by what had happened for the past few days. I do not feel a review is the proper place to point fingers, call people names, and spit venom. We have done you injustice to your product because instead of setting up a link on your website to this fine review, you have to turn away ashamed at what your family, friends, and customers might read in the comments. The last thing I want to do is hurt someone’s business or the potential business that might result from the review.

HSB has set a standard for Chilehead traffic that we all should respect no matter how you might feel about the people behind the scenes. It has helped many companies get the launch they needed, and informed Chileheads worldwide all about the fiery food industry and beyond. This isn’t about hidden agendas or politics, it is about people like Scott who donate their product, await the review and look forward to what might come of it. So what if nothing comes of it, because it is there moment to shine.

I hope that in the future we can find other ways to communicate our feelings than to have a pissing contest. Scott, to you and all the people that were directly effected, I am sorry. I hope Nick could repost your review, so at least he could have a link to show off. This mess should be deleted.

Buddah, YOU don’t owe anyone an apology for anything. The simple solution is for the HSB to provide a place for off topic conversation to keep this kind of thing to a minimum. Nothing needs to be deleted. There’s a lot of valid points and discussion that’s relevent to the day to day operation of this website. I agree that it should be located elsewhere, but not deleted.

The issues that have been brought up in this thread are not new. It’s something that’s been ignored for some time. Deleting the info and not addressing it does nothing but perpetuate the same problems. That’s the approach that has been taken with it in the past, and it didn’t work.

And what’s so hard about starting a thread in the Boiler Room, it’s only a click away? It’s a perfect venue for off-topic stuff.

Maybe Nick could rename that link ‘Discussion Board’ or something to make it easier to recognize what it is. When I just looked in there it said that there were some people viewing it, so some folks have found it, I guess just not everyone.

Another idea for Nick would be to do a post about the discussion boards that are here, just to help get the word out.

The comments are the most popular and convenient way for most people to post. So as long as that is the case, issues will arise. An off topic area can be easily done, and easily maintained. It’s been done elsewhere with sucess. And it’s all been discussed here before. But nothing has ever been done about it. That’s my point.

i like the label and wouldnt change it. i also liked the salsa and hearing that most of the last 5 ingredients are small amounts in another ingredient makes me feel better about buying more. about not refering anyone to the review because of all the bs in the comments, i dont see why not. none of the comments are negative towards the product, people will probably read a couple and get bored with it. at least they would get to see the review and read how much i enjoyed the product still. thanks for stoping in to answer questions even though it probably took you 2 hours to filter em out.

So, we have the debate. Other sites claim that their style or ways are better. And thats fine, maybe some are. Criticism and comments here can be considered constructive, but arent necessiarily the way Nick wants HSB to be. The way I see it, when anything, a website, sports team, company, is at the top, they are going to take alot of flak by those wanting that same spot and recognition. In other words alot of, do it this way’s (like us) Of the sauce sites out there, how many compare to the quality, content, and all the loyal readers that HSB has acquired over the years? Sure, lately there havent been 2-3 new posts a day to read such as back in the day. There have even been days where nothing new is posted. But overall, HSB is still here just as it’s quality (not quantity) always was. Whats different is the anger, hostility, and confrontations that have errupted between this site, and the “crew” at another.

Im not sure who said it, and it doesnt matter. Fact is, others come here to bash and stir up trouble, and it isnt the other way around. You dont see anyone over on other sites talking smack about them. Whatever. What ultimatley resulted is what you have now. So everyone involved can take responsibilty for what they have or havent contributed to it.

My point is that it’s not as easily accessible as the comments, which contributes to the fact that it’s not utilized. I didn’t say the boiler room wasn’t the place for it. And it’s not “just a click away”. It requires a separate log in and password, and more navigation. Like aI said, a whole different set of issues. And it has been tried before. It hasn’t worked.

As for the comments being in the middle of industry stuff, the industry stuff belongs in the manufacturer section of the boiler room. The comments section is a publicly accessible and interactive area, not an industry stuff area. Reviews are not for the manufacturers, they are to provide realistic product information to the public. Like I said earlier, it’s not advertising. If that’s what it’s geared towards, then that in itself throws the credibility of the HSB into the toilet.

And as you say, it all boils down to what Nick wants to do, after all it’s his site right? What does it matter what the people that visit and use this site want? As for Nick being the reason that we know each other, well, the HSB may have facilitated some of it, but I guarantee you it’s not the sole factor. The HSB isn’t the center of the Fiery Foods industry, no matter what some people want to believe. It’s just another spoke in the wheel.

Agreed, and throwing nasty personal insults back and forth has nothing to do with the product being reviewed. I’m not defending or castigating anyone, I’m just stating that I find it amazing how things have denegrated in the last year or so. It used to be nice to read comments on products, with the occasional zinger thrown in at someone, but it was taken in stride, and people quickly moved on. Now it has come to people setting out to start trouble, and liking the fact they started World War 3, at the expense of someone’s product comment area. I know many of the small manufacturers (being one as well), and getting their product reviewed virtually anywhere is a big deal. It certainly doesn’t help the said product when a bunch of people are mudslinging a bunch of personal bilge at each other. If someone interested in the said product wants to read what people think about it, they certainly won’t want to read through a bunch of vulgar rhetoric to sift out what pertains to that product, and will quickly move along, thus nullifying the chance for the manufacturer to sell that buyer. I wouldn’t be saying this if I didn’t know what I was talking about. Perhaps you’ll understand that.

Nick has done a lot of good for this industry, and many manufacturers will agree to this, big and small alike. I never said he was the center of the universe, however he has put a lot of up and coming companies on the map so to speak, and it’s sad to see a review thread become a maelstrom or downward spiral of personal insults, this thread is a perfect example of it.

A funny comment here and there is just that, funny. But when dozens of consecutive comments, progressively getting nastier and nastier, continue to appear, the comments about the actual product become lost in a playground battle.

Im not sure who said it, and it doesnt matter. Fact is, others come here to bash and stir up trouble, and it isnt the other way around. You dont see anyone over on other sites talking smack about them. Whatever. What ultimatley resulted is what you have now. So everyone involved can take responsibilty for what they have or havent contributed to it.

Ask me, Ill tell you. I dont have the time to spend here, or there. I do try and read the comments via RSS, but thats a few times a week. I know Nick is super busy, and he should get props for at least keeping HSB “free” and alive, without donations.

Agreed, and throwing nasty personal insults back and forth has nothing to do with the product being reviewed. I’m not defending or castigating anyone, I’m just stating that I find it amazing how things have denegrated in the last year or so. It used to be nice to read comments on products, with the occasional zinger thrown in at someone, but it was taken in stride, and people quickly moved on. Now it has come to people setting out to start trouble, and liking the fact they started World War 3, at the expense of someone’s product comment area. I know many of the small manufacturers (being one as well), and getting their product reviewed virtually anywhere is a big deal. It certainly doesn’t help the said product when a bunch of people are mudslinging a bunch of personal bilge at each other. If someone interested in the said product wants to read what people think about it, they certainly won’t want to read through a bunch of vulgar rhetoric to sift out what pertains to that product, and will quickly move along, thus nullifying the chance for the manufacturer to sell that buyer. I wouldn’t be saying this if I didn’t know what I was talking about. Perhaps you’ll understand that.

Nick has done a lot of good for this industry, and many manufacturers will agree to this, big and small alike. I never said he was the center of the universe, however he has put a lot of up and coming companies on the map so to speak, and it’s sad to see a review thread become a maelstrom or downward spiral of personal insults, this thread is a perfect example of it.

A funny comment here and there is just that, funny. But when dozens of consecutive comments, progressively getting nastier and nastier, continue to appear, the comments about the actual product become lost in a playground battle.

I never said that the personal insults were something that should be condoned. As a matter of fact, I stated that in fairness, both of those that were guilty should have been punished. And you are correct, the review threads are not the place for it. And I’ve already stated that if there were an “easily accessible” off topic area that there would be less of it. I’ve already addressed everything in your comment.

Up top left under Main Menu is the “Off Topic” section. If you click, you will see it go to march of 07. And look, there were like 20 comments that month. I believe Nick no longer felt the need to have this here as it wasnt being used. So, it was tried before. Back “in the day” all comments were under the “post of the day” and most werent related to the topic, but thats where all the chatter ended up even after the Off Topic was introduced. Its just where people wanted to post.

The off topic never worked because it was never easily accessible. Once the off topic thread disappeared from the home page, people would quit commenting there. Yes, there’sa link, but it’s small and you gotta go look for it. That’s why I keep emphasizing “easily accessible”.

So, we have the debate. Other sites claim that their style or ways are better. And thats fine, maybe some are. Criticism and comments here can be considered constructive, but arent necessiarily the way Nick wants HSB to be. The way I see it, when anything, a website, sports team, company, is at the top, they are going to take alot of flak by those wanting that same spot and recognition. In other words alot of, do it this way’s (like us) Of the sauce sites out there, how many compare to the quality, content, and all the loyal readers that HSB has acquired over the years? Sure, lately there havent been 2-3 new posts a day to read such as back in the day. There have even been days where nothing new is posted. But overall, HSB is still here just as it’s quality (not quantity) always was. Whats different is the anger, hostility, and confrontations that have errupted between this site, and the “crew” at another.

So what other site or sites claim that their styles or ways are better? I haven’t seen or heard any of that. The only time hear any chest thumping, or rivalry comments is when I read them here on the HSB.
As for confrontations between this site and the crew of another, in case you haven’t looked IT’S THE SAME DAMN PEOPLE. So it’s the same problem as it was before there were any other sites. The other sites exist only because of the crap that started here. The problems here to begin with.

Again, it’s the same people on the other sites as it is here. How about the HSB taking responsibility for a change as that’s where the problems lie? Why try to pawn it off on “other sites”.

And to repeat myself yet again, we’re all busy with better things to do. Using that logic none of the sites would exist. As for beeing free, hell, I’ve never seen a pay site for hot sauce yet to be honest with you. And tell me the HSB doesn’t accept donations. I myself have donated to this site. As have a lot of people. Donations come in many ways other than cash. Your cheap shot comment does nothing but snub a lot of people that have put a lot into the HSB trying to do something good. Something to help. Something to contribute.
