Fiery Hot Habanero Doritos

Frito-Lay announces Doritos® Fiery Habanero(tm) flavor tortilla chips. These Doritos have the habanero taste, zero grams of trans fat and a new look. Chips are available in 1.75- or 1-unit ounce.

Anyone see these in the stores yet? How hot are they?

Well it is a start commercially. Now I only wish that pizza chains would start adding habaneros as a topping.

Yes that’s right……double pepperoni, and double habanero’s. Don’t forget the chili flakes and the spicy sauce either.

I have tried them. They are spicier than you might think … for a national brand chip. But in the grand scheme of things, most chileheads would consider them weak. The flavor is like a blend of nacho and pizza.

I’ve only ever seen chilli heatwave doritos here - n they’re mild. Wouldn’t mind trying these though

I agree, Adam. I just tried these last weekend and was surprised that the heat DID actually build to something noticable after eating quite a few. The taste is pretty good, though.

Bottom line if you love snack foods there is a pretty good hot lineup at blairs and a few others. I would rather support that than a huge company like doritos for a hot chip.
But no doubt they are tasty like all dori”toes”

Doritos has a lot of new flavors coming out, but I haven’t seen this one anywhere. I have a bag of the Guacamole and the Black Pepper here, they’re both pretty good in my opinion.

Yeah I like Blair’s habanero crisps (chips or whatever they are. lol) but they are so expensive over here - over £1 for 28g bag

I tried them and wondered if they actually have Habanero as an ingredient. I notice a lime tast. There was a little heat but not a true Habanero flavor.

Probably not. They don’t really do that with any other flavors than Nacho Cheese and Ranch (or whatever their real names are, I don’t remember). They never did it with any of the old flavors they had (Salsa Verde, “Sonic” Sour Cream, etc.), nor Salsa or Black Pepperjack. So I highly doubt it.

I didn’t think so, I don’t remember seeing any, except the big grab one for .99 it will be interesting to see how well these go over, and how long they last on the market, of course there are those people out there that think eating spicy chips are a show of manliness

The Habanero Doritos are an affront to fiery foods everywhere. They are a corporate abomination. Theres more heat in a snowman’s heart than there is on these chips. It’s Doritos weak attempt to get the “EXTREME” demographic. I would go as far to say that these Habanero chips are less spicy than Tabasco.

Comment #25:
Comment by pmac (1393) - 4/8/2006 @ 3:29 pm | [ Quote ]

Yeah I would not doubt it clint, however to the average Joe, Tobasco is frigging hot. So if they were too hot (tobasco or greater) there market share would be DRASTICALLY limited, or the bags would last several sittings cutting into repeat purchases. Hot sauce stores carry hot sauces and Hot chips like the ones we know, but doritos need (WANT) a much larger market than that.
But I agree, just a way to try to grab a different portion of the market place

The flavor is a little odd.. kinda nacho cheesy, kinda vinegar-ish. I give them an enthusiastic so-so rating.

I agree with you pmac - While these chips might seem lame to us, if Doritos dusted them with Death Rain Nitro they’d have a lot of unhappy customers and angry phone calls.

Anybody try the flavor station buffalo wing sauce at KFC? It was kinda spicy, more so than I had expected. It had more of a Hab flavor to it instead of like a normal buffalo sauce. Seems the mainstream spicy foods are getting a little more potent, but I don’t think we will ever see any really scorching products from them, too much of a risk.

I like this new attitude by food companies as they address the ever growing public’s desire for spicy and zesty foods. Dorritos has been trying some new chips as stated in some other comments, i did not know about these Habanero chips yet though. Has anyone else seen that tabasco is coming out with a new sauce, sweet and hot? Maybe this is old news, but I saw it the other day on Tabasco’s website. I am excited to try it!!

If you have Krogers wherever you are, they have them.

As far as the negativity towards this product…while they certainly aren’t going to hit the tolerance of your average chilehead, it is a big step for Corporate America to take to reach out to what they obviously see as a “movement” in the market. I would hate to guess what this development and rollout cost them dollar wise. They are definitly the hottest thing Frito-Lay has put out on the market. Just the fact that they are doing this gives credence to us. So instead of taking the Macho position of “these ain’t nothin’”, bask in the satisfaction that we are becoming a bonified target market.

Mrs. Ryan, Is Hagens a grocery store? Do they carry a Hagens hot sauce or their in-house name brand sauce? One of the groupings in our collection is grocery store sauces- they are cheap but when but together they are a neat topic of conversation- “Oh yeah, I shopped there type of thing” Weird- but it’s our thing.

Completely on point, CaJohn. The fact that these mainstream chips are even on the market bodes well for the entire industry. More and more you see different high-profile food companies at least attempting to step into the realm of hot. 10-15 years ago, this would have been laughed out of the R&D facilities as being to over the top. As has been mentioned in many articles, the palette of the American consumer has changed, I’d say for the better, with the increased notariety of many companies whom offer very spicy/hot products. To say this product just plain sucks is looking at it with tunnel vision, blind to the types of corridors this is opening up for the rest of the industry. The more hot the public eats, the more they will want to eat it. This, in turn, will not only increase the number of products out there, but will force industry to come up with more and more ideas. I give Frito a Hell of a lot of credit for trying this approach, as it ain’t cheap to put out a new product in the scale they have done it. Frito normally tries extremely small regional release of new products for test marketing a said demographic area. They have gone off their normal test course and have released it in a rather large area. Of course it’s not HOT to many people on this blog, but as someone stated, many people think Tabasco is too hot. The reality is this is a market that has to grow in small steps, as you will not get a low tolerance individual to eat a fresh habanero, but perhaps over time, whilest consuming low heat products, that same individual will increase his/her heat level, eventually arising to actual hot stuff. There were a lot of “this stuff sucks” posts regarding this…Well, step back and absorb the reality of the industry, and look at the strides that have been made in just the last few years regarding hot/spicy foods. A thousand mile journey begins with the first step, and this industry in the US hasn’t even hit the first mile marker.

Well stated. Just the kick in the ass some of us need once in a while. The fact that those of us here on the blog have a high tolerance for hot food gets to our heads…I’m no exception from this. I appreciate you aproach to this and thank you for reminding us of the reality of things.

For those who have had the Habanero Doritos, Frito-Lay has also come out with Habanero Kettle Chips, substantially hotter than the Doritos.

Vic, Do they have Trader Joes in FL? If not, I’ll have to get you some of their sauce.

No sir they do not, Thanks for the offer- I will take you up on that. Anytime we go anywhere out of state, somewhere new, we always seek out the local grocers for sauce. Thanks brother………

How many times can I say I owe ya one, but hey I owe ya one!

I have tried these. They are pretty tasty but not “real” hot. They are not even close to Dave’s Gourmet Sauce - that is the hottest I have ever had.

Some commenters have complained about the price. They are stamped $3.29 per bag here in the Middle Atlantic states (USA), but they are usually “on sale” for “3 for $5″ or “3 for $7″.

Let me know if you have a tastier (and hotter chip).

Wow, you people are nuts! :)

I like jalapenos and onions on my food, but these Doritos are uncomfortably hot! I’m only eating them because my family bought them and I’ve got the munchies, but I have to slug a couple swigs of soda or water every few minutes to keep from igniting.

I guess I am part of that less-heat-tolerant demographic you guys mentioned. YIKES!

I’ve tried these, but they’re not hot. They taste like nacho cheese to me. Habanero peppers are about number 15 on the list of ingredients. Perhaps they could bump that up to number 2? So the ingredients would be: Corn, Habaneros, etc.

These Doritos KICK ASS! I tried them while in Orlando visiting my sister. We bought them at a Wal Mart there but have had no luck finding them anywhere in stores near me in Massachusetts. I have seen them available online at GroceriesExpress.com. They are a must try! Excellent with a grilled burger, pickle and beer! Good luck and happy eatz!

So spicy, but so good. Best chips I have ever had, to bad they are not sold in Canada. Does anyone know where I might buy some online? My e-mail is kutiekat@kiitymail.com

Kate, Doritos answer to these in Canada were the Sweet Infernal Heat. They are not very good though.

You can get Blair’s chips at most 7-11’s across the country and Old Dutch came out with a revamped Jalapeno Cheddar which is quite a good chip!

The wife had a big bag of these sitting on the floor next to the computer, and thinking they were plain Doritos (or some curiously-novel new flavor, based on the color) I grabbed a big handfull and stuffed them in my face.. Byahhhhh!!! My mind instantly raced to some unspecified moment in the future where, supposing I’m at work or some lame@ss party or the like and need a quick hotfix, I’ll be set. If I want trancendental “pain”, I’ll eat some of my own distilled hot sauce brew I keep stashed in the lead container under the kitchen sink, but lets face it, that’s not always available and I’m not always in the mood.

Granted, upon closer inspection of the flavor they’re not quite like savoring a fresh, homegrown pepper, with the juices dripping down your chin and whatnot, but I think they’re a step in the right direction. And as I said a paragraph or so ago, not exactly main course of a gourmet meal, but face it, I can’t think of anything better to latch onto when in a gas station mini-mart, amongst centrifugally-reinforced hotdogs of ubiquitous age, 9oz. candy bars (containing 8oz. of sugar) and all the other hor$e$hit availabe to the average coralled motorist nowadays.

Nay-sayers and Nary-do-wellers’ aside, I have a tickle in my tail about these and hope its a start of good things to come. I just got back from Japan and after searching high-n-low for something spicey and coming up disappoint…. well, its a fascinating place. Check this link: http://www.noapologiespress.com/presents/asiandrink/index.html and perhaps you’ll notice the lack of anything “controversial in the palatte”.

Kate… I just picked up a 77g bag in west-end Toronto at a basic corner store. “Limited time only!” is splashed on the bag.

As for the chip, pretty frickin’ hot. Understandable that most on this board would think they’re wimpy, but compared to other major brands this one blew my head off.

They are very hot and tasty for a commercial product and they do come in a large bag, however they don’t sell them in New York state I hear. Got to go to PA to get them, they must think we are to wimpy here in NY.

These are very hot after you eat a few. I find them at a Super Wal-Mart in southern NH. I have not found them at a regular Walmart however. The more you eat the hotter they get. I love my spicy food and these even get my nose a dripping LOL Hmmm maybe a good diet food for when I am having cravings. Can’t eat to many at a time so eat less and yet satisfy that urge for crunchy/salty snack LOL
