Hot Shop Review: Chattanooga Pepper Co.

« « Previous | Taste the 4th Sense - 1 Year Anniversary!!! » »

My Sister moved to the mountains of Tennessee several years ago, about 15 miles above Chattanooga she and her husband have a great house at the end of a long rolling road, “Tickle Tummy Road” is their nickname for it because your stomach drops out at least five or six times along the way. It leaves you feeling like you just got off of a roller coaster- kind of whoozy, but with a big smile. We love to go up and visit as much as we can and attempt the pilgrimage at least once a year.

Chattanooga Pepper Company

One of the many fringe benefits is the huge amount of shopping areas from Hamilton Place to the Downtown Shopping District. But hands down and without a doubt our favorite place to go is the Chattanooga Pepper Co. Located right on Frazier Ave. on the Northshore above Coolidge Park and the Merry-Go-Round (Big Time Fun). The Northshore area keeps getting better and better and new cool little stores and eateries are always popping up.

Chattanooga Pepper Company

“Mild to hot and everything in between!” The Chattanooga Pepper Co. boasts over 300 different Hot Sauces, over 50 types of Salsa, countless BBQ Sauces, and many hard to find pickled products. Owner/Operators Kevin Burris and Tom Casey also carry pepper mills, an assortment of peppercorns, soups, dips, and a big snack and goodies selection. A Chileheads dream, there are so many things to look at it made me dizzy at first. I was like a kid on a sugar rush running up and down the aisles “Hey look at that, Whoa look at these!” Yeah I’m a joy to be with sometimes.

Chattanooga Pepper Company

Wendy went right for a basket to put our newest additions in and I bellied up to the Tasting Table were I tried Crazy Jerry’s Golden Beaver, Mojo Goon VooDoo Juice (New to them, the bottle comes in a Burlap Bag!), Khan’s Island Habanero Sauce, and a couple of local sauces. Tom and Kevin were great, we talked for awhile about Hot Sauce and Hot Food, collecting, and the local Hot Sauce makers. I also found out they had first started in a Outlet Center with just a Kiosk and right about 50 sauces and due to customer requests they expanded and are still growing.

Chattanooga Pepper Company

Chattanooga Pepper Co. is a blast, we had a wonderful time as usual and racked up on some great sauces. Their selection ranged from the Big Hitters to the Local Small Guys, I could have stayed all day but the kids got bored and were hungry- Brats! As I left crying, and tried not to get tears on the camera- we told Kevin and Tom we would be back, and we will. No trip to Tennessee would be complete in our minds without stopping in to say hey and dropping some well earned Hot Sauce Allowance on some cool bottles. If you make to the Chattanooga Pepper Co. tell them Vic & Wendy sent ya, I know you will get the same incredible “Southern Hospitality” we did.

Not from where you are Scott, and if I remember correctly it’s not far off of 24, maybe 2 miles at the most. It’s worth the trip and the time, it’s a pretty neat place and has a lot of cool local sauces.

When Nick get’s it up on ebay, I think you’ll be surprised, He has saved the best for last! Number 1 set is the same bottles, but a different treatment. Blair & I did not each other were doing the same thing! A fitting tribute to our good friend Jim Campbell… Thanks Again, especially to those of you who have won the auctions!

Yes, all kidding aside, I think it’s awesome that this kind of money is being raised for such good causes. That’s what it all boils down to. But it’s also fun to watch and I can’t wait to see how the #1 turns out also. We have thrown our hat into the ring with high hopes a few times, but have fallen shy- they quickly speed past our reachability.

Hey Vic, I heard you stopped by the Pepper Palace, Craig had many good things to say about you and Wendy. Quite a store he has there isn’t it? I’ve got to check out the Chattanooga Pepper Company when we go back down to Tennessee. Looks like a great place! He is the only place I know of that has the little Light You Up spice bottles. Didn’t clean him out did you?

Yes we did, Craig is a great guy! I really enjoyed meeting him, we had a good time. The store is an total blast and I could have stayed hours just wandering around.

We hit Chattanooga as much as we can, we love the area and the people. Tom & Kevin are very nice and have been helpful every time we go in. And no I didn’t clean them out, but we tried. I hate having “Self Control”, but it’s more like Wendy has “Vic Wallet Control” and keeps me in line and from going broke!!!

Before I got into the business, I would go down to my inlaws in Gulfport, MS every summer and take a trip over to New Orleans so I could stock up. Sue always had to keep me in check, so I know what you mean. I could spend hours, and many $ in those stores so she tried to keep me moving. The real danger is when I’d go down to the Gulf area for the fire protection gig, that’s when the real carnage hit!

I thought it was funny when I let you taste the Deathmatch sauce before the match, and you said you weren’t affected by the heat. Gotta love the delayed carbon fire effect (a personal touch). It was a lot of fun ‘watching’ you guys eat those Wings of Doom. :)

Hey Mr. CaJohn, I saw that you mentioned a while ago that you wish you still had an original 2002 Legend with the different shaped bottle. How many of those did you make?

After what you put yourself through the other day, I’ll let it slide. I would have paid admission to see that! We’ll call it even.

NEVER - the entertainment was free!

I never did get to try to Horsed-up Habby

Huvason, I think Nick might owe you some sauce too. You know, some Garlic Lover’s ;-)

As a side note, Chris, you have used your one reprieve, next time, GAME ON, not necessarily for a Deathmatch, but another of the competitions. I must say though, Caesar, who downed 20 #1 wings in less than 2 minutes WAS impressive to say the least! Him storming to the mens room right afterwards was priceless!

Oh My Goodness! Scott is getting formal on us!! Mr. CaJohn indeed LOL (sorry John, it struck me as funny) but that is a very good question. I am curious about the answer myself.

Video, a MUST have for next time.

You are right, that was impressive.

Who was the gentleman that wanted “in” on the deathmatch that your “advised” not to enter? Just asking. ;-)

Do you mean the older guy who was on the other contests that tried cheating by hiding full wings under his bone pile, and made me put on my Quincy gloves to dig through them? It was just some guy someone else brought. To be honest, I was more worried about his health on the Deathmatch table than anything else. Perhaps the world would be a better place if I hadn’t let my empathy take over. :D

Lisa, you could have definitely done the #2 competition. We don’t do a #3 competition, there’s no pain. :)

I guess, he had on a striped shirt. I offered him my spot at the table. I missed the part about the “that tried cheating by hiding full wings under his bone pile”. I saw the gloves come out, but didnt know thats what you were up too. ;-)

I know your seemed worried about his health, but if he signed the waiver???

That Old dude would have been in SERIOUS PAIN if he ate those wings…. I disagreeed at first, but after eating them agree that he should not have entered.

Hey Defcon, maybe you could do a more girlie version as far a contest with the #2. Jodie and I also spoke about it that day and would have loved to participate but 30 wings is just too much. We would just end up vomiting, which I know some would enjoy seeing but how about maybe one with 15? Less Wings + Girls + PAIN = HAPPY EVIL CREATOR
lol

There were about 500 in total in that bottle, the ones with 12 sides. I can lok at the production sheets tomorrow to see if my elder memory serves me correctly. :)

Scott, that bottle was what we put our “premium” sauces in. There was only 4 or 5 pallets of that glass used. Z, HDH, Krakatoa, The Legend and maybe a couple of more were packaged in that bottle in 2002 for a short while.

Great review of the Chattanooga Pepper Company. I am the creator and owner of the award winning Khan’s Island Sauce mentioned in the review. It is their best selling sauce. I was there today delivering some Khan’s. If you are in Chattanooga, stop at the Chattanooga Pepper Co. and try some Khan’s Island Sauce.

Stan, welcome to the blog! Your sauce is excellent, I have had several opportunities to try it and enjoyed it very much. I m going to need a reload here pretty soon and it’s on our list of “must gets” when we make it back up that way.
