Hot Shop Review: Pepper Palace
Pepper= Any of several plants of the genus Piper, as cubeb, betel, and kava. Any of several tropical, American, cultivated forms of Capsicum frutescens or C. annuum, having podlike, many-seeded, variously colored berries.
The podlike fruit of any of these plants, varying in size, shape, and degree of pungency, with the milder types including the bell pepper and pimiento, and the more pungent types including the cherry pepper.
Palace= The official residence of a royal personage. A large, often gaudily ornate building used for entertainment or exhibitions.

Upon entering the gates of the Pepper Palace you quickly realize “We’re not in Kansas anymore Toto” It takes a long thirty seconds or so before your eyes stop scanning as much as they can as fast as they can before your instincts take you directly toward what you love the most- Oh you can try and fool yourself to “Play it Cool”. You know, save the “Best for Last” by going for the OK stuff first, but man the draw of those long walls of Hot Sauce is just to strong. Fight it all you want, but it’s all in vein- it’s like a magnet pulling on you. Soon find yourself side stepping slowly from one end of it to the other talking to yourself, mumbling the names, and laughing at the labels. Yeah people around you may snicker and stare, but a couple of people away there’s a guy or two doing the same thing. Then one of the Pepper Palace folks comes up, offers you a sample of something tasty, and strikes up a conversation about one of the sauces in front of you. That’s about when it hits you, you’re in a quadily ornate place of hot peppered entertainment and spicy food exhibitions surrounded by hot sauce royalty, a little slice of heaven baby!

With humble beginnings in 1987 owners Craig and Tanya Migawa opened “Hots Pepper Pod” in a mall in central Wisconsin, by 1992 this HOT couple opened two additional stores in the same Wisconson region calling them “Pepper Palace”. In 1995 the decision was made to close the Wisconson stores and the Migawa’s and the Pepper Palace headed to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Making a home in the Mountain Mall at traffic light #6 right in the heart of Downtown Gatlinburg and have been making Chiliheads, Gourmets, Pepperheads, BBQ’rs, Hott-a-holics, etc…very very happy ever since.

As I wandered the aisles and peeked in every nook and cranny, I noticed many pictures adorning the walls of said royalty- the Big Leaguers if you will. There is a great one of CaJohn watching in amazement The Flameboyant Chef on fire at a Chili Cook-off last year. The Pepperpalace.com has some great additional pictures as well under “Hot Events”. Also they are “Putting the finishing touches on our Newest Concept” and will have a new website roll out in September to replace the old one so keep your eyes peeled.
Free bottle of Nasal NapalmSpeaking of websites, Craig and his team have offered exclusively to us the HSB, anyone who types in “Hot Sauce Blog” on the “where did you hear about us” section of the web order form will receive a FREE bottle of their newest product “Nasal Napalm” (The Most Powerful Horseradish On The Planet) with an order of $25.00 or more. Nasal Napalm will retail for $9.95 and will become available on 7/20/2006. “I will gladly sign the HSB bottles!”….Craig.

With over 70 FEET of samples, there is so much to choose from someone (like me) could spend hours in there and possibly lapse into an endorphin induced comma, happily and quite contently. The Pepper Palace is self proclaimed to have been built brick by brick on customer service and I saw it first hand. We spoke with both Ronda Vaughan and Patrick Bradford, and both were outstanding in helping us find what we were looking for, fed us sample after sample after sample, and just made us feel welcome and appreciated. It was honestly very nice, they are great/Knowledgeable folks and we are so glad we met them.
Pepper Palace Team
Owners – Craig & Tanya Migawa ( Since the Beginning )

Asst. Manager – Jeanette Curtis ( 5 years )
Warehouse Supervisor – Patrick Bradford ( 2 years )
Sales Manager – Ronda Vaughan ( 1 year )
Sales People – Elaine, Pete, & Youlanda
Overview:
Just a great time had by all! You can see the intensity in Craig’s eyes when he talks about what he has accomplished and what he does. And I had a chance to see his sadistic side, I got the opportunity to sample the “Nasal Napalm” and my eyes are still watering almost a week later. Craig’s eyes got to just about the size of dessert plates when I took a pretty small spoon full, yes I wimped out, he and Patrick had me so freaked with their continued “it still hurts” and “it’s gonna burn all the way down” jeers I backed off some. Go ahead you can say it- Pansy! Let me tell you, it packs a punch but it’s good stuff and I enjoyed it.

Nice job Vic. Talk with Craig last week can’t wait to see his place.
Great review Vic. This was the first Hot Shop I ever visited. The wall to wall sauces and the friendly one-on-one service I have received on every visit amazes me every time. Great shop, great people.
[Comment ID #49064 Quote]
Totally agreed. Pepper Palace made me realize that there was more to hot sauce than the brands you can find in a super market. still to this day I ask for recommendations from the staff when I’m there, and I’m always pleased with what I come home with.
All of the sauces they sell under the Pepper Palace label are great! (at least the ones I’ve had…)
[Comment ID #49064 Quote]
DITTO!!
[Comment ID #49064 Quote]
DK Leroy said you took him too a chop shop. He said you know a lot about cars. LOL
Been there quiet a few times. Buy lots of sauce when I’m there. In a couple years I moving to maryville so I can go there a lot.
“possibly lapse into an endorphin induced comma, ”
Hahaha – do you get the while writing reviews and eating hot sauce!
Great review! That place looks amazing!
[Comment ID #49090 Quote]
Shhhhhh!! That was supposed to be just between me, him, and the butcher!
Oh, cars! I thought it said cats! Sorry Leroy.
Disclaimer: No cats were harmed or maimed in the above statement. All stunts were performed by professional stunt cats and stunt men.
[Comment ID #49068 Quote]
Ethan, I was gonna also mention the recommendations but was late for work, I’m glad you brought it up. I always ask for one recommendation for a super hot, and one for a great flavor. I have never been disappointed either way.
This place looks great! I would love to spend hours there! Great review!
Teneseee agh!!! why is there nothing great like this in Southern California! all I got is hotlicks which is small, with little selection and its waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overpriced not to mention 2-4 hours out of the way.
Great review Vic, we need a place that in CT. May have to take a trip to TN just to see it.
That place looks awesome. Nothing like that in Denver, not even a small hot shop. Suuuucks. Luckily, we go to a few tradeshows a year.
You know what this blog needs? A map or list where you can select a state and other bloggers have posted hot shops, manufacturer facilities, events, etc. So when anyone is traveling they can look up say,
Ohio – Cajohn’s
Tenessee – Pepper Palace
Colorado -Danny Cash Plant
Indiana -Open Fields (Event, 3rd week of September)
California – Hot Licks
Etc, etc.
That would be a great resource that would continually grow. Just a thought. I know I would use it.
[Comment ID #49149 Quote]
Great idea Lee, I would love to see that too. Does that mean your willing to take on the mission of getting it started? lol
[Comment ID #49150 Quote]
Hahaha. Sure! I’ll start with the ones I know of that we sell our sauces to and then everyone can add to it. Nick has to agree to build the format, though. He’s not busy anyway.
[Comment ID #49151 Quote]
That’s cool, I’m sure when he gets back, he’ll find the time for this. I don’t know of anything in this area, the 2 that used to be around have closed.
Blair – Highlands NJ
Maddog – Boston area, MA
[Comment ID #49151 Quote]
The Frapr map can handle that.
[Comment ID #49153 Quote]
Whoops hit say it too early….. Meant to pose it as a question. We could use the frapr I think for that purpose. Just add stores like we added ourselves, no????
[Comment ID #49154 Quote]
Frapr???? what’s that?
[Comment ID #49149 Quote]
Thanks Lee. I guess if I had your sauce at Jungle Jim’s you would have mention me. LOL
[Comment ID #49156 Quote]
We’d never leave you out Bret.
[Comment ID #49155 Quote]
Nick gave the ability to CHAT on here, although it never caught on. It also, however, had a nice mapping feature, which I think could be used for what you and Lee are talking about.

[Comment ID #49159 Quote]
Huv, if it’s easier e-mail me the link the big show 823 “at” yahoo
Hey Vic, what day did you take those pics? I have a friend that was just in Gatlinburg recently and he says there are things in the pics that indicate it was possibly at the same time he was there. He was there on the first of this month.
I need to get up there again soon myself. With this heat, the TN mountains would be a great place to be right about now!
[Comment ID #49131 Quote]
Hey Bigshow, let me know when and if you plan a trip to Gatlinburg, it’s only 3-4 hrs from where I live. I could meet ya there and buy you a beer or two! Lot’s of other things to do around that area besides Pepper Palace, not that you would want to or anything!
It is a great area to visit. Literally tons of stuff going on during the summer.
[Comment ID #49162 Quote]
Bigshow, I sent ya an invite from the HSB Frappr map.
[Comment ID #49161 Quote]
Can’t wait. Thanks
[Comment ID #49163 Quote]
They have bears I like bears. LEROY GET OFF I”M NOT DONE.
Man that place looks like heaven! I just might head over there next time I am in the part of TN
[Comment ID #49163 Quote]
Sorry about that. A few years ago the rangers told him it’s not very safe to take a bath in the creek with the bears. But you all no Leroy.
[Comment ID #49165 Quote]
Thanx DK…. I think the frappr would work for this idea….
I”m going to try and get down in Sept or Oct. To see his place and go do a walkabout In the woods with my wife. Fall alittle cooler for my big a*#. Hey maybe I can get my wife in the creek. Only if she knew for sure that Dk and Leroy were not watching from behind the trees. LOL
[Comment ID #49163 Quote]
DK, It was almost 3 weeks ago. We spent the day between there, the Aquarium, and walking the strip.
I just got off the phone with Craig, he was pretty happy with the post- I have to thank you all for the positive words and for all of you planning a trip there please tell them “Large Marge Sent Ya!” ….Tell them Vic says Hey!
[Comment ID #49149 Quote]
There’s crap over here in ORE-EE-GONE
[Comment ID #49180 Quote]
Did you say sling some carp over here in ORE-EE-GONE
[Comment ID #49149 Quote]
In Indiana you can also add J Bob’s in Nashville IN- pretty decent collection for a small shop in a neat tourist area. For one of the larger collections, Avon Olde Farm Market just west of Indy has an extensive collection including most all of Blairs & most of CaJohns’ fancy glass. Both also have some of mine.
[Comment ID #49180 Quote]
And I was just tellin’ the Mrs. “We need some crap”
hey Vic, Ryan just picked up some “crap” you may be getting some crap before to long
[Comment ID #49181 Quote]
Ryan and I do a good job of slingin carp her in ORE-EE-GONE
[Comment ID #49186 Quote]
Do you feel the love
[Comment ID #49185 Quote]
That was some funny “crap” he e-mailed me the other day! I’m not sure who my two friends were on either side of me, but I saw where their “crap” came from!
[Comment ID #49188 Quote]
ROFL. That was some great crap. I had to laugh pretty dang hard about that!!
[Comment ID #49187 Quote]
There is always love here in our neck of the woods
[Comment ID #49188 Quote]
Those two would be Ben Dover and A. Nelfun
[Comment ID #49182 Quote]
Hey Jim, 9 days and counting man! How are you feeling, your training going as planned? I am getting excited for you, I wish I could be there to cheer you on brother!
[Comment ID #49191 Quote]
LMAO!! I didn’t know Vic had friends
[Comment ID #49193 Quote]
They’re not considered friends- just Butte Buddies
LMAO do you guys listen to butt rock together?
[Comment ID #49192 Quote]
Suffered a bit of a set back with a sprained Achilles a few days ago but it seems to have healed (heeled?) well
Ended the workouts a little short of where I wanted them to be, but we’ll see shortly. Trying to get the danged (non hotsauce!) world to step up a bit in the donations. Knocking on doors at businesses tomorrow.
[Comment ID #49192 Quote]
And while we’re on the subject… While appreciate the fact that some folks might be tempted to show up and surprise me, and I’m flattered and appreciative more than you can imagine, *please* don’t. Donate instead what it would have cost. Trust me- it ain’t a pretty site to see me pouring sweat with my eyes closed and zoning in on a cadence while on the machine
A pink helmet, wife beater T-shirt, and a cigar makes a better picture then me soaking wet and smelling
[Comment ID #49197 Quote]
Cool, Good luck with the door-to-door- that is tuff! Wow sorry to hear about the sprain, luckily that was all it was. To me the Achilles always seems to take forever to feel better if it ever does, the pain seems to linger for awhile, a lot like shin splints (?spelling?) – they seem to hurt for so long.
[Comment ID #49194 Quote] Are there any pictures.
[Comment ID #49179 Quote]
Oh yea, the aquarium is great. I went to see it last trip up. That and Pepper Palace were the highlights of my trip.
You knw Vic, I thanked you for the review, but I forgot to thank Craig, Tanya, and the crew for such great service each time I have visited. Thanks you guys! Hope to get up that way soon.
[Comment ID #49178 Quote]
Bret, let me know when you will be in TN, I would love meet you and thank you in person man. Besides, I havn’t seen Leroy for a while and could probably keep him occupied in the aquarium while you take your stroll. Did he ever learnt to swim?
[Comment ID #49200 Quote]
Were did that come from that’s sick.
[Comment ID #49202 Quote]
Souded like a Leroy question to me.
[Comment ID #49198 Quote]
Was actually a pretty scary picture to be truthfull with you, but pure homage to the “Angry Pepper” himself, if he could do it!
[Comment ID #49201 Quote]
That would be cool. Lets work on John on going down also. Leroy is ready he went and got his Fishen stick.
Bret, I’ll send you the picture in question when I get home
[Comment ID #49206 Quote]
Be very carefull of what you ask for Bret- it’s guaranteed to give you nightmares for a straight week!
[Comment ID #49206 Quote]
Ryan, send it my way and I’ll send ya one of me wrastln’ a gator! See Bret, now that’s sick, asking for the pic outright! (actually, Bubba wants to see it, she said she remembers the TV show Bosom Buddies, but Butte Buddies is a new one on her
)
[Comment ID #49213 Quote]
You’ll have it in just a min. DK
Bret, already sent you a copy
[Comment ID #49209 Quote]
Oh carp, What have I done! Bubba, cover your eyes! Remember those nightmares you had after finding Leroy and ‘ol Blue in the creek with that bear? I gotta feeling this one’s gonna be worse!
[Comment ID #49214 Quote]
Bubba says,
! She also said it looked just like those two guys from the TV show! Vic, didn’t know you knew any celebrities! Bubba told me to ask if you can get her an autograph! Just make sure it ain’t a signed picture!
Ryan, that’s funny man! Good job?
HMMMMM someone is not getting very much work done today……
[Comment ID #49217 Quote]
DK, That’s good stuff isn’t it. I just about fell out of my chair when I saw it. Ryan has talent and quite the imagination!
[Comment ID #49222 Quote]
Just about! Heck, I did! I was expecting something like that, but not…..LIKE THAT!
Yea, I chatted with Ryan a little about his talents during the Pimpn’ sauce thing, he gave me a few pointers and looked at what I had come up with. He’s talented, that’s for sure. I mess with PSP a little, but pretty much just a hack compared to him.
Ryan, keep up the good work man. Send Vic the ‘gator pic when you’re done with it.
You know, actually, I can link to it right here, what was I thinking!
DK GATOR WRASTLN’ PIC
enjoy
[Comment ID #49226 Quote]
Sorry everybody but that is a ball buster. I spit my beer all over my PC. That was great. Thanks Ryan and Vic. That was good
[Comment ID #49206 Quote]
Thank you good stuff. Leroy wants to know the name of the butt on the left.
[Comment ID #49228 Quote]
Ha! You never got any of my emails, but this made it through? Makes me wonder how you got your spam filter set up! is Leroy your computer tech guy? Maybe if I attach a crazy pic to my email it’ll make it through!
Actually, I sent ya something via snail mail today Bret.
I want 10cs for the store.
[Comment ID #49231 Quote]

[Comment ID #49226 Quote]
Sending the pic to Vic right now…I’m a poet and didn’t know it
[Comment ID #49231 Quote]
Tech will not change anything. I get a about 100 to 150 emails a day. They said I would get junk mail all day long if they change my settings. I’m globe and theres a lot of crap out there.
[Comment ID #49239 Quote]
Yea, I figured a filter was catching it. Was just joshing ya, wasn’t upset that it didn’t get through. No telling how many I loose at work also.
[Comment ID #49240 Quote]
OK, got it. Thanks Bret.
[Comment ID #49238 Quote]
That’s good, Nice guns DK! That pic is in The Boiler Room, the hair is great- very good detail work.
[Comment ID #49237 Quote]
Hey thanks, that means a lot to me coming from you- you say it like you see it, no holds barred. I appreciate your opinion, thank you.
[Comment ID #49245 Quote]
The one in the forum is so small though, Wanted ya to get the full effect! Lord knows I’m gonna be affected by yours for some time now!
Man, and I have to go to sleep tonight.
Pepper Palace Rocks! (back on topic?)
[Comment ID #49163 Quote]
thanx DK, I sure will look ya up. I was in gatlinburg like 15 years ago. before the pepper palace was there.

Have fun Bret, Don’t let Leroy try and give Blair any ideas. I can see it now, Blair’s G-4,999. “G” for gator, “4,999″ for how skeeters Leroy picked out of his bug zapper! Green and brown wax, ughh!
Ok, I’m calling it a night. Night everyone!
[Comment ID #49263 Quote]
You like kimchee or salted duck eggs. Wait tell you open that box, great combo.
[Comment ID #49266 Quote]
Night Brother. Oh crap now they all know
[Comment ID #49260 Quote]
I only know too well exactly what you mean Bret, it takes a huge effort and a lot of back breaking preperation to conduct our inventories. I could only imagine what you all go through counting the amount of SKU’s you must carry.
[Comment ID #49267 Quote]
hmmm, doesnt sound good, but i suppose try anything once
I guess it’s time for a road trip
[Comment ID #49335 Quote]
i think we should all plan a time to meet in TN. Have our own little gathering at the Pepper Palace. They came to the blog, now we can bring the blog to them.
I was at the “Pepper Palace” on July 12th and spent a couple of hours tasting the samples and looking at all the different hot sauces. They wouldn’t let me take any pictures inside the store, but rules are rules!
They have a sign that says”buy 5 bottles and the 6th is free”. So, I had them wrape up 6 bottles for my personal consumption. I bought Acid Rain, Kato’s Island sauce, Brother Bru Bru’s African Hot Sauce,African Rhino Peri-Peri Hot , Trindad Habanero extra hot and PEPPER PALACE HOT SAUCE – SIGNATURE HOT SAUCE.
Good Morning All.
Where’s Bret?
Dont the chickens get fed first thing in the morning?
Why isnt he up yet?
(I know this is yesterday’s post, but I guess Nick isnt up yet either)
[Comment ID #49424 Quote]
Sorry been doing paper work since 6am. Do you know how much work you can get done before everybody gets to the office and bugs the crap out of you.
[Comment ID #49424 Quote]
Heck the chickens were fed hours ago. I think I saw Leroy sneaking home.
[Comment ID #49439 Quote]
That’s why I come in at 6am… I get more work done from 6-9 then the rest of the day.
I love these shop reviews. How about something out west? CA, OR or something along those lines?
[Comment ID #49632 Quote]
Check the boiler room, i think there was something about a couple of shops in CA. not positive though
[Comment ID #49336 Quote]
Need to time it with Bret, I don’t want to miss seeing Leroy! Only 3-4 hr. drive for me, so as long as it’s on a weekend, I’m good anytime.
Did you ever get to the Frappr page Bigshow?
