HSB Readers: Nominate the Sauce of the Month - July
Posted on 06.14.07 by Nick Lindauer @ 8:55 am | Comments: |
« « Previous | SPY PHOTOS REVEAL CROP OF REALLY HOT, HOT PEPPERS… » »

As some of you know, Sweat ‘N Spice Hot Sauces features a Hot Sauce of the Month Club. Following the Christmas season, the number of club members has nearly grown by 5x! In the past, the Sweat ‘N Spice staff has picked 1 sauce to feature each month and we’ve ordered just a few extra cases. Now, with the huge increase in members we have to order 15-20 cases of the sauce of the month.

Realizing that an order of this size is hard for some small manufacturers to supply but also realizing that an order of this size can really help spread the word about a lesser known sauce - we’ve decided to leave the sauce of the month nominations up to the HSB readers from now on. Early each month we will start the nominations for the following month.

Guidelines:
- The sauce must not have already been a Hot Sauce of the Month featured sauce (within 12 months)
- We try to emphasize flavor over fire
- The chosen manufacturer must be able to supply 15 or more cases
- Does not have to be a sauce already carried on SNS (we’ll add it to our product line)
- The chosen sauce does not have to be a “hot sauce” but must be able to be used in hot sauce like applications
- The retail price of the bottle cannot be more then $10

Previous Hot Sauces of the Month
(in alphabetical order)
- Big Dawg Habanero Lime Hot Sauce
- Cackalacky Spice Sauce
- Cry Baby Hot Sauce
- Fatalii Fire Hot Sauce
- Frostbite Hot Sauce
- Green Bandit Basil Serrano Hot Sauce
- Harry’s Habanero Hot Sauce - Winner: May
- Jackson’s Death in the Desert Habanero Hot Sauce - Winner: April
- Kiss of Fire Hot Sauce
- Krakatoa Hot Sauce
- Loco Luna Lava EXTREME Hot Sauce
- Make Me Moan Mango Hot Sauce
- Mild to Wild Fiery Hot Habanero Sauce - Winner: June
- Tabanero Hot Sauce
- Talon Hot Sauce
- Toxic Tonic Hot Sauce
- Well, Smack My Ass and Call Me Santa

How to Nominate:
Simply leave a comment with the sauce you’ve chosen to nominate for the Sauce of the Month and explain why. Only 2 nominations per person and you can nominate a sauce that’s already been nominated by another reader. Manufacturers, you can nominate yourself as well.

The sauce of the month will be chosen 1 week after nominations begin and those readers that have nominated the chosen sauce will get 1 free case (unless you’re the manufacturer of course). And each Hot Sauce of the Month will be discounted for all HSB readers for that month.

So what sauce would you like to nominate?

I still like my Hula Girl Chipotle Habanero. Savory with good body, this is a sauce that loves meat. Chipotle comes first in this puree- the habs a distant 2nd, all perfectly seasoned. The heat may not be as strong as some of you may like, but it also allows more people to experience how good it is.

How about Danny Cash’s Bottled Up Anger. I literally tried this for the first time last night, and ate about half a bottle on 4 slices of pizza. It was amazing stuff. The flavor was perfect on pizza, especially the garlic. The heat was a nice low-medium: mild enough to slather it all over my pizza, but hot enough that I noticed it. All around a great sauce.

I would like to nominate my Blue’s Habanero Reserve. It’s brand new to the sauce industry and a few HSB readers have tried and loved it. By winning sauce of the month, HSB readers will get to have it at reduced prices. How’s about it HSB folks?

I’ll second the Blue’s Habanero Reserve. Just used it last night with dinner. Funny thing is out of about 30 sauces on hand it was one of two sauces I grabbed. It is just a tad thin but it has nice flavor with a decent kick. Weather it wins or not I know that I did and will spend my hard earned bucks on it.

Big Dawg CPR Kickin’ Hot Apple Suprise. This stuff is so different than the norm it is a must try!! It works so well with everything that I can see the day you will see it in every grocery store across the country. You want flavor NOT fire-this is THE SAUCE. I cannot say enough good about this sauce. Only downfall is 5oz bottle. Oh yea-

Definately Scorpion Bay Hot Sauce needs to be considered .. my personal favorite is their Hotacado (avacado hot sauce) .. have discovered a healthy dash of it in egg salad is highly addictive .. in a very good way. - I know a lot of people have been talking about this company recently as they’ve just begun manufacturing again after a few years hiatus .. back by popular demand as I understand.

You know what, I just sucked down half a jar of Not Yo Mama’s Habanero Marmalade.
Brian (the maker) sent us samples to try and remove the bitter taste in my mouth that I had for marmalades, and well, he’s done it. I’m digging this stuff big time!
So, if I’m allowed to make two suggestions, Not Yo Mama’s Habanero Marmalade, or for the milder consumer, the Not Yo Mama’s Pepper Marmalade.
Both excellent, excellent products!

I’m going with CaJohn’s Curry Fruit.

Mandy used an entire bottle the other night on some chicken and it was superb. I still can’t stand most chicken dishes, but after trying the sauce I had from a show, I thought it would go well with chicken oddly enough. I’m sold on the stuff, good as heck.

I haven’t had too many to try so far, but I loved THT’s Cry Baby although it didn’t really have a bite, but it was nominated all ready. Naga Sabi Bomb was very good too and so far I am leaning towards nominating the previous mentioned Big Dawg CPR Kickin’ Hot Apple Surprise, but I will hold out until after my egg omelet. :-D

Out of the following hot sauces in my cupboard, which would taste the best on an egg omelet this morning? The Droolin’ Devil’s Garlic Chili Sauce, DD’s Liquid Sin, Cajohn’s 10, Cajohn’s Select Habanero Puree or THT Toxic Tonic.

Buddah,
If you’re looking for bite (not having tried Cajohn 10) I would suggest my Droolin’ Devil Liquid Sin.
Red Savina’s with a little bit of honey to sweeten the pot.
Droolin’ Devil Garlic Chili is mild, but has enough garlic to knock a buzzard of a sh*t wagon, so if garlic is your thing, take a big hit of that.
According to Newman, it’s “DOPE!”
Toxic Tonic reminds me a lot of HP sauce, much better tasting and a hell of a lot hotter. I love it on eggs as well, but the heat won’t kill you.
I’d crack them all open, put them in front of you on the table and start slathering them on a little bite at a time and see what wangs your twang the best.
Good luck, hope you enjoy the Droolin’ product. Did you pick it up at Peppers??

Richard’s Hot Sauce

I just opened a bottle last night. Great flavor, nice heat, but not overpowering. I can’t wait to make some burgers so I can slather it over them.

Comment #49:
Comment by Buddah (515) - 6/15/2007 @ 3:15 pm | [ Quote ]

I purchased all those except the Puree at Peppers. I chose Toxic Tonic for the omelet this morning, and although it wasn’t hot for me, it went very good with the eggs and the cilantro sour cream which I mixed it in with. Very nice flavor. I decided to save the DD Garlic Chili for the hamburger I will have for dinner tonight. I might open the Liquid Sin with it too, since the Garlic won’t have a bite, but one problem. I all ready opened the Garlic Chili and after the finger taste I don’t think I will be able to try another hot sauce, because it tastes very good. I look forward to that burger tonight.

On the THT products, the Cry Baby was so good, I finished the bottle in 2 days, the Toxic Tonic is all ready passed the 1/2 way mark after the omelet, and the Make Me Moan Mango was delicious as well. Claps hands to THT. I would have bought their garlic one, but Peppers didn’t have it at the time. I still will reserve my vote until after my burger.

Thanks for the kind words! We’ve been trying for two years now to make that sauce hotter. We keep running into the issue of not enough heat using the fresh habaneros. We don’t want to use extracts to get the heat we’d like and on the other hand, the more habanero we use, the more bitter the sauce becomes. We have decided to NOT increase the salt and/or sugar content to counteract the bitterness from the peppers. We appreciate the flavor of this sauce too much to compromise it but rest assured we ARE seeking a more intense heat level.

The Droolin’ Devil’s Garlic Chili Sauce was indeed good stuff and polished off 1/2 the bottle dipping my hamburger. It’s got my vote and since I can vote twice I will throw out a unreviewed hot sauce from Pepperhead’s in Port Jefferson, NY and my home of Long Island, called Pepperhead’s Caribbean XX Pepper Sauce. I nominate Scorpion Bay Hot Sauce. The Chipotle flavor is awesome.

So do people usually get their first posts just to vote for the same sauce?

I want to nominate Scorpion Bay’s “Chipotle” Hot Sauce. I’ve enjoyed it on all my favorites..Hamburgers, on top of my Cheese fries, steaks and of course on all of my Mexican food favorites! My future surf trips south of the boarder will be accompanied by this sweet and smokey, taste bud sensation!!! MUY BUENO!!!

I want to nominate Scorpion Bay’s Original DeArbol Hot Sauce. I love it! It is thick and complicated and wonderful on top of almost everything I eat. A true ultimate red hot sauce with just enough heat to make it yummy!

I would like to nominate Scorpion Bay Hot Sauce, they have a flavor called Hotacado that is the bomb, its basically an avacado hot sauce.

Interesting trend isn’t it??

It’s like “Vote for me for Hometown Hotties” contests.

People you’ve never heard from before that want to get some exposure so they get all of their friends and friends of friends, etc, to go to voting pages and register and vote.

It’s like Bret asking everyone to go vote for JJ’s washrooms. I’ve never had the pleasure, but to help Bret get his washrooms voted #1, why the hell not? I’m sure they are spectacular, plus there’s pics of them to vote on. I voted for JJ’s, I want Bret to get that Golden Toilet statue for his desk.

If a sauce voted for by first time posters is good, then it doesn’t matter that they’ve never participated in the community before, now does it?

Nick’s not going to put SNS’s name to asauce just because people new to the blog voted for it, and plus he has to be able to get the quantities he needs for his HSOTM club in due time. The proof is in the pudding for Nick, that’s why I like how he does business.

WELL I THINK YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR BRET’S EAT SHIT AND BARKS AT THE MOON SAUCE. WE KNOW ABOUT GROCERY STORE’S AND NOW WE ARE TOP 5 RESTROOM IN THE U.S.A..www.bestrestrooms.com…. So we know about hot sauce also. LOL

I actually have a bottle of ESABATM! Quite nice on pizza - good flavor and not too hot for us novice hotheads. And the JJ’s bathrooms are nice and all, but it’s the entrance that sells them.

But the sauce I really want to nominate is CaJohn’s Sauce 10! Good taste and a nice lingering heat like I’ve only experienced once before. Flavor and fire all on one very attractive bottle.

Hi Guys,

Please accept my apologies. I did tell a few of my friends about the vote. Kinda snowballed as they also told a few of their friends. I can definitely see your points and hope my fellow voters did not offend your sense of fair play. I agree the sauce should stand on its own. I will try and refrain from my shameless sense of self promotion. or should I say “sauce” promotion.

Mahalo,

Power to the people! Give them what they want! lol

Shameless self promotion? Maybe. But it the cheapest form of advertising!
