Alright, you know the story. Only 59 of these puppies were made and they were only available for purchase at the 2006 Fiery Foods Show. And they went fast! Here’s the official thread with much better images then those originally posted here on Friday of the Fiery Foods Show. The wax on the N-59 is done in a style similar to the B-99, but if you look real close at the purple, you can also see some white woven in.

N-59 Reserve

Side of the N-59

Side of the N-59 One More time

Back of the N-59 Reserve

And once again, like we did for the Holiday Reserve & the B-99, if you recieved a N-59 leave a comment here with your number and we’ll track them across the country.

Today is the day and people will know their fate. I cant wait to see some of those cutting-room floor bottles pictured here.

OK someone is teasing me with that bottle. The only 2 bottles for me better than that one are #1 of course, and #40 but #44 ohh man I could eat that one if it were not so HOT!
:)

I would like to know what inspired him to start drizzling the wax over top the bottles like that? :)

Once I get out of the “I just bought a house and im broke” stage I can go back into the full on hot sauce buying again. Im almost recovered from getting the house but not quite yet. I could just taste that N-59 in my hands but just could not get it.

The N-59 is truly amazing! I think it’s by far the coolest bottle I’ve seen to date. It blows away the holiday and the B-99 in my book. Even though I have love for those as well, of course!

Scott- if it makes you feel any better, I’m also in the “I just bought a house and I’m broke” stage. It’s not much fun yet, and it definately put a damper on my hot sauce collecting. If not for this house, I surely would have been in NM in line for a N-59.

I got into it with my wife over hot sauce at the show. I told her Look I sold my bike for our wedding now the only thing I do is hot sauce and have a few beers. Too bad. Serriously I completly blew the bank on NM. I’m in the same boat lads

Comment #22:
Comment by Cheffy (401) - 3/13/2006 @ 12:15 pm | [ Quote ]

I collect all my change on a daily basis and put it into a big jar, every 2 or 3 months I cash it in and put into my “Hot Sauce” Checking Account. This allows me to save money for the trip and gives me hot sauce money without flipping the wife out to bad. This year however, I spent to much and got out the old credit card which my wifey has since confiscated. Whats a Hot Sauce Collector to do??? Guesse I’ll have to start walking the streets for cans.

And you guys thought last night was agonizing…Today is the worst part of it all. Its like waiting for the bomb to drop. You’re either going to survive the blast and come out king of the mountian, or be laid to waste by the blast of disapointment…Have a nice day all :-)

Comment #24:
Comment by MSK (591) - 3/13/2006 @ 12:20 pm | [ Quote ]

With only 59 produced and all selling at the show, we should see a healthy response to this thread.

Morning Reilly….In my humble opinion, there’s only one way to relieve the pressure of money within a marriage. If both of you work, each handles their own money/account. Spiltting the bills proportionately is a must. If a bill zeros out on either side…readjust. The rest is yours to spend as you see fit. Works beautifully for us.

Many a spouse are gunning for me now :)

Comment #25:
Comment by Cheffy (401) - 3/13/2006 @ 12:25 pm | [ Quote ]

This has worked for us as well, split the bills 50/50, split extra expenditures ie…X-Mas and B-days 50/50, and the rest gets split 50/50, 1/2 to a savings account and the other half split between us for ourselves. Money does not have to be a arguable factor in a marriage if you budget well and plan accordingly.

I need some advice please, it is kind of time sensitive.
Has anyone heard of the following Hot Sauces:
Capital Punishment
Last Rights
King Tut & a Queen Neffertity
those 4 sauces I have the opportunity to pick up.
Are they a good addition to a collector bottle set of sauces? Old rare discontinued?
etc I have never heard of any of them.

Thanks for any and all help

Capital Punishment came out of Lancaster, PA (year unknown, 2001?) under the company name of “Fire Me”. I have no idea if they actually manufactured the sauce, had it co-packed or was just the distributer. None the less, Cheffy is correct, it’s still available in some stores but “Out of Stock” is common.

With many sauces having sub-levels of production and/or collaboration between companies, I find it mind numbing to even think about tracing it out.

I just want to say that whoever the winners are, they will be very well deserving, some of the collections pictured are simply amazing. You can tell by the countless posts on the subject that we all share a passion for what we do. I think the Blair’s bunch will do us justice and however it falls and after the dust settles the majority will be satisfied (some a little more then others) in how it all played out. It’s going to be something we all remember for a very long time, I am just glad to be apart of it.

I don’t stand a chance in hell. So I am not so excited. The biggest problem is even if i get an offer to buy, I probably cannot afford it. I had my pics and e-mail sent to Blair’s about 20 minutes after it arrived in my inbox. But I bet there were 100 others even faster than that! :)

I wonder if we will see a “special breaking news bulletin” on the top TV stations tonight?…just trying to help ease all those pounding hearts with laughter.

I think it’s ridiculous that this”filaworks” guy on Ebay is selling his THIRD B-99 and a Holiday reserve. No wonder people have so much trouble getting in on these things when Blair sells them! This guy’s probably got about 10 of them.

Comment #119:
Comment by Ryan (2615) - 3/16/2006 @ 10:50 am | [ Quote ]

Adam, that has been a topic of much debate here on the HSB. We refer to these people as brokers rather than collectors. They buy up a whole bunch for the soul purpose of selling them and extreme inflated prices for profit. Its one thing to start ar 0.99 and let the bidders decide how much its going to go for, but to start the bidding at an inflated price is just bad juju. Problem is, there are people that will pay these prices so it will never stop. Its impossible for Blair to tell who is getting more than one in the end. He can only rely on the names and addresses that people submit when ordering. These brokers probably have their wife/girlfriend, kids, employees, friends buy extra ones so he can sell them on ebay. If its any consolation, those of us that are honest and are told 1 per customer, only get 1. I for one never sell my sauces, and have no intention of doing so. Be patient, eventually you’ll be able to score a rare one for less than what you normally see them go for…I’ve done it a couple times already, just need to wait.

Comment #120:
Comment by DEFCON Creator (1735) - 3/16/2006 @ 11:38 am | [ Quote ]

However, on the flip side, some people use them as barter to fill in holes in their collections. If I was able to get 10 B-99’s I would, but would not resell them, I would use them for trade only. This way 2 people are happy, not monetarily, but as a collector. I don’t agree with people acquiring a bunch of a limited release for monetary gain only, it’s kind of Machiavellian (sp?).

(This is just to explaiun why my shipping options are always screwed up) :) I have the wrong options available to me when I use ebay.com as I am in Canada, but I have found that when i use ebay.ca the items do not showw up for some reason to everyone if they do not have worldwide search on it so I use the .com shipping options and i make due. I do it the fastest way possible for that $ if it costs me a couple bucs extra i eat it.

I hear what you guys are saying, but I dont see a problem with selling a bottle for $ if that $ in turn gets used to buy more Hot Sauce. I understand there is a difference between a broker (who buys in quantity for a profit) and the regular chilehead who mainly buys/sells for his collection.
Trades are cool, but ultimatley a trade is very similar to a transation for money. say you buy a couple of 6ams. you only need one. you wait a year or so and offer to trade that to someone for a bottle they have that you want. Now you bought the 6am for $99, but now its worth say $200. So the bottle you would be trading for must be about equal to that $200 or you probably would not trade. So you are making a profit because at the onset, a $99 bottle would not trade against a $200 bottle. So it does look better to trade your bottles to others on the surface. I am simply pointing out that selling you bottles to obtain others is really not that different. either way, you are gaining a profit (in $ or value). selling, gives you more freedom, and you are not limited to finding someone to trade with.
I think the big issue that bothers most is the brokers. They buy many,, many bottles and then not everyone gets to buy one. Then, we all end up paying $ for them. The value of these bottles goes up along with the increased popularity of Hot Sauce Collecting. I dont think that will ever change.

I agree with you Chris K. I am not an any way against buying and selling bottles, I do it myself. But it’s always to get a sauce that I need, or just more sauces in general. I just don’t get how some people end up with so many. I remember recently someone selling a lot of ten 2005 halloween reserves. Now, only 299 exist in the world - should one person be able to buy 10(or more) of them?

I am in the unfortunate situation where I am caving and paying WAY TOO much (probably not too much, but I hate to do it) for a bottle that no one will offer up except through a reseller (I do not blame them, as I would not either) I have found with one. So I am biting the bullet to get a rare one. I hope it all works out! :)

Well, I dont think 1 person should get 10 out of 299. But as ryan said, there is no way to control this since they can use friends, family, etc. to order. Thats what I think is at the root of all of this. This usually isnt even an issue when there are 999 bottle released. Only when there are a couple of hundred or less. How to make it fair, I couldnt tell you. Blair tries, but he really doesnt know who is getting multiples when they all ship to different people. You can try to boycott the super high priced bottled for sale, but someone will usually buy it anyway.

Hmmm, perhaps you misunderstood. Most brokers, in my experience, are not just selling to complete a collection, they are doing it for sheer profit. I don’t have a problem with good ‘ol capitalism, but I would MUCH rather see someone trade for something they need, as this makes both people happy with a new item in their collection, and doesn’t sledgehammer your wallet at the same time. Buying a rare bottle makes you happy and sad at the same time (not to mention upsetting the spouse), especially if you have to overpay for it, while the broker just sits back amused that someone spent so much to acquire something. The barter system makes everyone happy, as both sides get to choose who they deal with, and can wait until the right deal comes along, and don’t have to worry about gutting a paycheck.

I’m for the barter system as well. BELIEVE ME, I have spent some serious money to get some of the sauces I have. I’d say there’s some real happy brokers out there. I’m now going to try to get two of a limited reserve. One for the “collection” and one to trade later. That’s fair i guess. I always just buy one because I wan’t someone else to get a shot. But, now seeing how these go, I might as well load up. I think they call it a catch 22????

You make an excellent point Creator - I would always rather trade, but unfortunately finding someone to trade with is much, much more difficult than finding someone to buy. Lots of people want to build collections but don’t have anything to trade. Everyone has to buy at some point. Ebay is the fastest and easiest way to go, and it’s only set to buy and sell. Now if there was something like ebay but for trading things only, that would be sweet!

Also, if you are lucky enough to have most bottles in your collection, and only need say a Hallowenn 2004 (99 made). What would you be able to offer someone who would trade that. Because if they already have a Halloween 2004 chances are there isnt much else they would need.
If a collector has mostly everthing out there and has some duplicates, what could he trade for? it would be better for him to sell and reinvest that money back into his collection to but the new bottles as they come out. Cant really trade with Blair.

The barter system in this case is a double edged sword. Not that I disagree with bartering, I too would much rather do that, but here is the part that still cuts deep…In order to trade, you have to have something the other wants. To get something the other wants (whether you had it before, or need to get it in order to get something better FOR it in trade) you have to spend money. Somewhere along the line, someone paid for something. In trading, sometimes you come out ahead, other times you don’t. Its all in the eye of the beholder. Its ok in my book to get a couple of something to help someone while helping yourself, but I don’t agree with buying a whole bunch robbing those with the funds to make the initial purchase of that opportunity. Take the 05 holiday reserve for example. I don’t have one, but say someone had 2 and was willing to trade. I don’t have anything to trade, but I did have the $100 to buy it when it went for sale from Blair. Now the person that has 2 has destroyed my ability to get one at an affordable price and am now forced to spened more than $100 to aquire the item that the holder of the holiday reserve is wanting. Brokering: the purchasing of a comodity for the soul purpose of exchanging said comodity for another (ie: money, or other items of equal or greater value) for the end result of gain. Some brokering may appear morally acceptable if conducted one way, but either way you do it, when under the microscope, its still brokering. This comment was not intended to offend anyone, place blame/point the finger, or any other form of negativity, just a simple statement of facts.

Rock on,
Ryan

Mad, I’m getting loaded…Wait, I may have to send out THE e-mail…Wouldn’t that be something, sending out THE e-mail while everyone is getting drunk. Perhaps I’ll just wait until Saturday morning, that way everyone’s hangover will be cured when they receive an invoice from Defcon HQ. It will also allow everyone to enjoy St. Patrick’s Day instead of sitting in front of the computer. So let it be said, so let it be done. Honestly, I forgot it was St. Patty’s Day, I’ve already been to about 4 parades.

As for the barter/broker thing. Well, if you are just starting out, or have reached a point where the only things you need are the hard to find ones, well you will indeed have to spend some cash, I understand that. But there comes a point when you will want to trade instead of buy outright. Look at Mad for instance, he isn’t happy he had to spend a dumptruck load of cash, and would have rather bartered, as would I. My collection is very small and focused, I know what I need, and have the time to wait until it becomes available. I understand the “want” for something, but impulse buying is nice for short term, until you see the same thing offered for substantially less, which is not uncommon. Good things come to those who wait. The entire idea of building a collection of hard to find items is an entire ideology. I am a numismatist as well, and have bartered hundreds, if not thousands of coins over the years, and have done pretty well, but of course have had some bad hits, mainly due to the bullion market, but so be it, my focus is not deterred. If you find it difficult to find something, look harder, as “want” is a great driver for persistence, and persistence will usually grant you what you want.

huvason, I cannot add anything to this…seems like you have hit the nail on the head! ha ha
See, you need to sell, trade, barter some of your stuff so you can have al little paypal account. that way you can purchase more sauce with the money you earn.

chris k the package arrived After Death and the Hot Sauce from Hell Wax :)
I need to know how to fix something though, and I am sure it is simple.
Perhaps Nick L can help.?
The seal the Brittle black plastic shrink wrap that holds the Skull, split right down the middle over the ring of the key chain. anyone know where to get the shrink. I imagine once you have a piece it is just a blowdryer to heat and it shrink down again.

Thanks in advance for any help on this.

By the way, anyone have a botlle of Bailey’s Irish Scream, topical since tomorrow is St Patty’ Day. There are 3 versions of that label. Bailey’s Irish Scream, Irish Scream and now The Original Irish Scream. The first one created a stir with the attorney’s who represent the Irish Cream, the second appeased them and the third was after Ron Boyle of Porky’s Gourmet came out with his Boyle’s Irish Scream.

I was just playing around on Google and I came across a N-59 for sale on a website called Pepper-King.com. I’m not sure what language it’s in, but if someone does, they should probably scoop it up. They are also selling a signed bottle of Cajohn’s Mucho Danger Hot sauce? Anybody know anything about it?

I am taking you VERY seriously, I’ve seen your collection. Yes those are the same bottles and the base recipe for Mucho Danger is the Black Mamba. So close, it’s the same. When we were test-marketing the sauce, we had several special editions of the sauce, all show specific labels. I think Nick offered the ABQ set for a bit last year.

Now there is Mucho Danger! It has been our policy to do a special sauce for every “Hot” show we do, that’s where the Magma 4 and Frostbite 4 came into existence. hey were from the Houston Hot Sauce Festival. not going to mention the guy’s real name, but the e-mail address he uses for his ebay auctions is “so and so at junglejims.com”. There are others from jungle jim’s as well. I don’t complain about the price of the auctions or the packing job he does, but here is where he is shady (read his feedback). The guy WAY over charges for shipping and handling, and when you pay for a certain shipping method, he sends it in a less expensive mannar. There is a guy that paid for priority mail, received it parcel post (he left neg. feedback), I paid for UPS 3-Day ($30+), he sent it USPS Priority Mail (didn’t leave Neg. feedback cause it was my first purchase on ebay and didn’t want to recieve neg. on my first one). The guy is shady.

Not to bring this up, but we never had a winner from the other contest yet, where did that prize go? :-)

“The Game shall commence as follows: I shall, upon Nick’s initial request, choose the #1 caption, as I will hold true the request. This choosing, of my choice, shall receive a special treat. Instead of The Blog releasing the exact time of public acquisition, the author of the winning caption will mysteriously be exempt from the initial e-mail which will state they are available. Not only will this show the author of the winning caption they have won”

Patience, Grasshopper, patience. Nick is fully aware of what is going on with this. There is indeed a prize, and a very nice one at that. It just hasn’t finished accumulating yet (you think I’m kidding). I am waiting on the final ingredient for the prize, which will be offered shortly. Trust me, whoever wins is going to laugh their ass off, not to mention having a 1/1 in a manner of speaking. Rest assured, The Creator hasn’t forgotten who said what. (evil chuckle)

ryan on 3/30/2006 at 7:50 pm said:

This thing in here about “Nick’s initial request” is totally wrong. Somebody needs to go back and read some stuff. I for recall “Nick’s initial request” quite clearly and it stated that “Creator” will choose the TOP 5 (not the #1) captions, and the HSB would vote on which is #1. Now if I’m wrong, please feel free to provide proof. In the mean time, here’s mine.

Here’s how this works: Take a look at the slighty disturbing photo above and come up with a caption. Leave your caption as a comment. The top 5 will be picked out by the Creator (he doesn’t know this yet) & those 5 will be voted on by the HSB readers.

Thanks for tuning in :-)

As much as I hate to say this (I really do), its silly to imagine that anyone would only make 3 pre-production anything. There’s all kind of testing that has to be done on stuff like that. Taste tests, does the presentation pop and make people want to buy it. DUDE! you have the only signed ones (well, one in the set of 3). It’s like the old style labels…there’s a number of them out there, but not all are signed. What you have is incredibly unique.

To be honest, I couldn’t care less about the prize since I’m “disqualified” that big meanie (note my sarcasm). What DOES get to me is his dragging this out, trying to change the rules and process of a contest he did not create. I’m upset that he is casting aside those that actually buy his product and still think he’s someone worth giving attention. Now I know this sounds a little harsh, but I’ve noticed a pattern here. Genious marketing, and though he is gaining some popularity, he is also burning some bridges in the process.

Guy, no offence, but you are right, it is a bit harsh, he is just a person, and has ideas, things change, and he has a lot on the go with the Zero mailings and Defcon day, give the poor guy a break, and he has the regular job to contend with, and he does not need to give anything away. It is all in fun, please remember that, this is not to be taken too seriously. Live life laugh have fun, if they don’t like it, F’um!

No offense taken. I realize he’s just a person, but I beieve you’re missing the point. The point I’m trying to make is that the contest was not started by him, it was started by Nick. Nick laid down what we were supposed to do, what creator was supposed to do, and so on. On several occaisions, he tried to rewrite the whole contest. I don’t recall ever reading anything by Nick giving creator total control of the thing, he was only supposed to pick the top 5. Creator decided on his own that he will pick the number one caption “per Nicks initial request”? He was totally wrong there and everytime he gets called on it, he has no reply because he knows that those of us that remind him this was Nick’s contest, not his, are right. So to sum it up, its pretty much the same as you starting something and he walks in and says he’s taking over. That’s not right no matter how you look at it.

Hey pmac, my 2 cents here, there is anohter contest on Saturday, or a prize being awarded. The first one never had the prize awarded so why be lead on to believe this one will? Dont “put it out there” if your not going to deliver. “Now…..To come up with a prize……….

Just posing the question, read it and decide for yourself.

Well, it seems we are going to have a number of people from this site showing up on Saturday. With that in mind, I figured I’d spice it up a bit. Normally, the Day progresses with mass ingestion of wings, and the inevitable downing of large amounts or various grog, not to mention hanging out and just plain enjoying yourself. Well, perhaps this time a contest is in order. I was trying to decide either a habanero eating contest or a DEFCON #1 wing eating contest. I think I’m going to go with the wing eating contest. The specifics will be announced at the event. I was kind of afraid of projectile vomiting from the habanero chomping contest, so I’m sticking to the wings, something I’m quite adept at. Now…..To come up with a prize……….

this was the contest that Nick had to delete like a gazillion insults and The Creator had to put up with everyone taking pot shots at him that got out of control right…That’s not right no matter how you look at it. I think a few ruined it for the mases. Unintentionally though, as humour is purely subjective. Pretty sure it was unspoken that the contest was over befor it ended. That was my impression anyways. :)

He’s probably seeing how close you’d get to the reserve on those items and possibly sell it to you if its high enough. He buys these strictly for investment purposes. Being in accounting, I know that for every month that those sit on his shelf, he’s losing aprox. 2-5% in interest off the money he would make on them. I say its time he liquidates his inventory.

It was for an N59 for a 6am and a Holiday ‘04 but after repeating that I have a holiday ‘04 and he has about …no word of a lie 15 of them. I stopped trying to attempt an offer. He must have 10-15 4am as well, i wanted a pretty fair trade, a bottle that has 59 vs a bottle that has 499 straight trade, I wanted that #14 caldera for #14 N59. He has #9 Caldera so i didnt think that was unfair, and still do not. Bah no matter. I am done with him. To think i defended him here too.

OK.

Enough of me trying to be nice to some of these people.

I had tried to make a deal with you earlier, pmac, and we didn’t reach one. Now, a situation arises this week that makes it necessary for me to sell these sauces that I was holding back on. I still wanted to give you the chance to bid on them, given our past communications, in which I had divulged information in confidence, etc, and felt you should have a heads up.

OK, now…. I have four computers in my home and business. I save all of my emails on one main business computer, and the others I am able to check email, but they aren’t saved there. So, when I emailed you earlier, from my notebook computer, I didn’t have access to the emails we had traded earlier…. thus my bringing up that point.

As for the accusation…. I apologize for this in advance, but

F*CK THAT! How can you just take that straight to this forum, putting something as damaging to my professional reputation, not to mention personal, without at least contacting me privately…. which you knew you would be able to do, as I had just emailed you. To retract the bids, come here and say that is just crap. I am not doing anything wrong, all I have done is put sauces on an auction site.

If you look at my history, you will see that I very rarely place items up for auction, other than the am set which I periodically list. I am not a scam artist, and I am not an unethical businessman, and I RESENT THIS ACCUSATION.

I can’t type more now… as this is just too infuriating right now. I was excited to see bids on my auctions, as my items are usually not bid on… so the retractions hurt enough, but for this slanderous bullshit to come out.

Again, I apologize if this is offensive to anyone, but I am just upset.

Until later….

Jeff

This was posted on the B-99 thread earlier in response to a post by Ryan, and I wanted to copy it to this thread, just to clear a few other things up….

Response to Ryan:

OK, let me say a little something here in my defense.

To begin with, I am not the guy at the Saturday Market. I do all of my sales out of my restaurant in Manzanita, on the coast.

As for how I got the numbers I have, I purchased the #91 just the same as everyone else, and Blair contacted me, as I am one of his oldest customers, and asked if I would be interested in the #1 and #99 (for a very premium price, believe me). I had seen these types of offers for other reserve sauces before on his web site, but I had never taken the plunge and purchased them. This time I did. I had planned on keeping the #1 (because yes, I am a collector, and have been for over 15 years) and selling the #99, but the interest wasn’t there for the #99.

Now, I am forced to sell a few bottles to do a huge remodel on my restaurant/residence, and I chose to sell my low numbered CALDERA, the B-99, and some other bottles to help pay for the work. If that is wrong, I am sorry.

I was never a whorder of Blair’s products until they were sold out on extremefood.com itself. I admit that I did buy quite a few of each of the ‘am’ sauces when they were available, but I sold them on the Taste The Pain web site for the same prices as everyone else, and did not raise the price until after Blair ran out. I have never tried to inflate others prices. My reason for the high price I ask on my web site is that I have so few, and they are part of my collection, I don’t really want to get rid of them. But, if someone is willing to pay the prices, I will make the deal. It is still a business.

I have explained all of this to Nick and pmac, the only people that actually took the time to ask me in the first place. If I am doing something that you don’t approve of, I am sorry. I enjoy the HSB, and like to keep up with what others are doing with their sauces.

But, let me reiterate this one point:

I am not the Saturday Market seller. I have no affiliation with him or his business practices, whatever they may be. I am a hot sauce lover and collector, but at the same time, I do sell hot sauce as part of my business (just as I believe Nick does, right?).

I look forward to reading your response, Ryan, as well as the comments of any others. And I would like to continue to peruse and occasionally post on the HSB, but if it feels like I am not welcome, then I will not bother you again.

Thank you for allowing me the forum to explain my reasoning. Have a great weekend.

And thanks Nick! I appreciate your confidence and advice.

Jeff

there was no confidence broken by pmac. all i was trying to get across was that I thought we were, if not exactly friends or anything, but at least there should be some amount of trust between us. I was not trying to imply a breach of confidence.

Jeff, you are more than welcome to post here. I’m not the most liked person here, but hey, its a blog. People can choose to read me or not. If you are in fact NOT the guy, or have no affiliation with the man, at Saturday Market, my appologies. When I puchased a sauce at Saturday Market last year, I discovered that it had been carefully opened, then the cap was put back on (carefully as well). The man gave me a business card at the time I purchased the bottle. I called the number on the card to see about exchanging the bottle. It was a sunday afternoon and was visiting my parents for the weekend. Had to ask if I could exchange it fhe following weekend as I lived in Newport at the time. The number I dialed, and the address on the card were in Manzanita. Unfortunately, I do not recall with exact detail the name of the business, and I do not have the card any longer. I was unable to make it back to Portland the following weekend, but the weekend after that I went to Saturday Market, and the guy was not there. I had already spent more on gas than the sauce was worth, just said screw it and persued it no further. A short while after I had moved back to the Portland area, and the booth was no longer there. I’m sure you can understand how I would believe the man I purchased from could be you. The other uncanny thing is that I had a nice conversation with that man about the AM series. In this conversation he told me, as you have stated here tonight, that he was holding onto them until they were less available and would be able to demand a higher price for them. There’s too many similarities for me to ignore.

With that said, on to the ebay auctions. A word of advice. If you want to put to try to put to rest the accusations made here tonight, contact this “monkeychamp” and share your conversations with the rest of the class. I’m sure all would like to get to the bottom of this. Second, Odds are you will never be able to recover all the money that you forked over for things like the #1 B-99. I’ve watched your auctions for a very long time and the prices you’re asking for both starting bids, and buy it now are pretty high and that is more likely to scare people away when they will more than likely settle for a higher number at a much lower price. The reserve bit…This is something that I have gone over and over in my head. What’s the point? If there is a minimum amount that you are willing to sell the item for, why not just put that as the starting bid and let it go from there? at least then people would know if they’ve got the bucks to get it or not. Reserves are a tease. Buy it now prices are fine.

So there is my response. I for one am a patient buyer and am not concerned about which number I get. I always look for the best deal, and usually get it. That is why I do not even attempt to bid on your auctions. Call me cheap, but I’ve paid far less for my collection than most people with similar collections.

I appologize if I came off like I was trying to slam you. I got a little caught up in the moment, and in my profession, I have to be criticle and suspicious of business owners. That is why I am good at what I do.

Again, you are more than welcome to post here, there is no reason you shouldn’t. In fact, I encourage it. It would be nice to hear from someone else here in OR.

Skepticle was the word I was looking for in my previous post, not really suspicious, that would imply paranoia. I’m the type of guy that will call it as I see it and not afraid to say what’s on my mind (Nick knows this all too well). Its nothing personal as some might think ;-)

Back in 1995, we did have a Hot Sauce Cart in Lloyd Center during the holidays, but that is the only time we have done any off-premises sales. We went under the name Left Coast Hot Sauce for that business.

I haven’t been to the Saturday Market when there was a hot sauce seller there… so I really have no idea who it could be. I remember a guy from Troutdale that had a booth there, but I have no idea why (or how) he would be giving out our business cards. We do put stickers on all of the bottles that we sell, which have our phone number and email address on them. Maybe, if as you say, the bottle was pre-opened, this guy had one of our bottles. I don’t know.

I just hate the fact that with these accusations flying at me, everything I say is just me trying to explain them away, and that could just make me look guilty. So, I am going to say goodnight for the night, and hopefully tomorrow will be different….

oh, and as for the reserve prices on my auctions… I am just going by what eBay says helps… having a low opening gets more people to look at the auction…. but I wouldn’t want someone with an opening bid of 100 or something getting an item that I paid ten times that for. Live and learn, I guess….

Definately looks a little shady. I would definately NOT bid on the auction when someone new comes out of the blue and starts bidding high on something like Caldera AND ANOTHER #1 bottle. There is no way to really tell what is going on but if it looks suspicious then stay away, far away!!! Just my $.02…

Do not regard this comment as a willingness to include myself in this battle. I have no stake in it what so ever. I’m only doing this because I love and respect this venue and it dismays me to see it become a battleground.

I’m not taking anyone’s side by saying this, but…drawing from my experience as an eBay seller with close to 1900 transactions under my belt, I’m going to bring out a fact that seems to have been overlooked.

The bidder in question, “m0nkeychamp”, is not only bidding on seller “capsicumtoo” auctions, he/she is also bidding on two other’s auctions as well. The auctions I’m referring to are…

Item number: 4450630874 (Ended 03/30/06) New York
Item number: 4451288750 (Active) New York
Item number: 4451824841 (Active) Illinois

I’m going to leave it up to all parties involved to draw your own conclusion.

Wow, some intersting reading here. I dont think I want to be involved in it cause I see points from both sides. Its a fine line to walk and since everthing gets all exposed here on HSB it makes that even tougher. This buyer monkeywhatever may be up to something, or may be just someone new, someone that is trying to drive the cost up, or someone that bids on items for the heck of it and then backs down knowing they will never win. Some people get like that when they know they cant win. Its kind of like a revenge thing, If I cant have it, well then, you wil need to pay more for it.You need to see if he completes a transaction that he actually wins to be sure. Thats tuff to do because you wont know until you see some feedback for him.

As for a seller listing a bottle for a super-high price, The way I see this, its their choice. They own the bottle and if thats what they feel it will take to have them let it go, then more power to them. Understand that ebay is global and reaches millions of people. HSB is also, but that number is far far fewer. Not all people buying collectible bottles visit or even heard on HSB.

I am not sideing with high prices, I can understand that for most everyone they have certain bottles they will let go for a certain price. To me, part of collecting is giving up something to get something else. Certain bottles are “off limits” and will never be sold, but I would be lying if I would say that I wouldnt part with most of my bottles. Most people have a price, but they wont admit that. I am not talking about intentionally buying to sell here, I am talking about having something in your collection and then deciding to make a change. So, is there harm in putting that out there? If you are willing to sell, but will only accept a certain amount. Yes, there is a reserve, but that deters people sometimes.

Not sure, but if you are willing to part with a bottle thats really the only way to get that news out there.
Until we have a device that allows sellers to post their potential “would sell for this price if offered” bottles, then the only real way right now is to list on ebay and see what happens. Can you say idea here???

As for the “Caption This” being off the radar, it isn’t in my estimation. That took forever to read, my only thought is, where is the Chilehead brothered? Everyone is entitled to their own thoughts and actions. My wife taught me that even if you don’t agree with someone or something, you have to understand that everyone needs to say, feel and do what they believe to be right and that you might not always agree or understand. Being able to see thru that is what is most important. Rememmber the words from the “Master” Blair, Karma, he let all those cutting room floors go to contestants when he didn’t have to because of Karma. Karma will govern all of our actions and spoken thoughts, so lets rememmber to follow good karma and let others do, feel and say what they need to. Thanks E-man and Cheffy, ’tis true, you reap what you sow. Through the Valley of Misdirected Hostility, even the little lost soul will find the correct path of understanding to another’s reality. Wow, that was deep…Well, time to load up the DUV (Defcon Utility Vehicle) and feed the masses. I’ll throw Nick some pics from today so you can all enjoy.

I have appologised to an extent via an e-mail to capsicum at ttp, I do expect a return of an f-you. I do not expect any one to pay attention to the ramblings of a man under the influence of mmmm tasty wine :)
However, i do regret vocalising my opinions, it could have/should have been handled a little bit better on my end.

pmac is sorry for the turn of events, this is my official public appology to capsicum at ttp. As eman stated, he has done alot of things with him and NEVER a hitch, as many others too i am sure!!!!
I will not stop posting, but I will never do something publicly like that again. To the missus, sorry I ruined your night. I hope it got better after a bit.

I just woke up and still working on my first cup of coffee, so please bare with me.

Creator - The time in which you are taking in making the prize for the caption this contest has not bothered me. I am truly sorryif that is how it seemed. This is a point that I have tried to make over and over, but it seems that I have failed in making that clear. I don’t know about everyone else, but I of all people understand what it is like to have litte time to do things. On top of a day job at an ever growing company where the work load has gone far beyond what my supervisor and I could ever hope to handle without living at the office, I am husband, father of two, and have recently started some projects involving hot sauce. I have empathy for you in regards to time constriction and your wife not being able to help out. There have been times where my wife has had medical problems of one sort or another and was not able to help much.

In regards to the conspiracy theory, it is only human nature to guess about the unknown. When the caption this contest was posted by Nick, the process in which the a winner would be decided was made very clear. Upon your return from NM, without any word from the one that put the contest together, you had TOTALLY changed everything. I was not upset by my disqualification. If I need to prove this, I still have the e-mails Nick and I exchanged that morning. I felt it was not right to take Nick’s contest and change it to suit you. When Chris and I made posts questioning your taking over this contest, the only response either of us ever got was more about how you were running the show now. I can appreciate your use of vaguery and mild deception. It is somewhat amusing when you’re the one on the giving end. I guess its like the age old question -What came first, the chicken or the egg?- Without definitive answers, one is left with no choice but to make the best guess possible. In this case, my questions were met with comments that did not anwser them, or received “silence” so to speak. I was dealt the cards, and I played my hand best I could without knowing what the other players are holding.

To wrap this up. I do not hate you, and a lot of what is going on I do understand and sympathize. I have been trying to figure out what is going on the best way I know how. Granted it is not my place to do so, but I try to look out for everybody and when things started to look shady, I felt that everyone should have a better idea of what was going down. Its cool to keep things a surprise, but some of what you have posted has been misleading, and somewhat spiteful (going back to when you came back from NM). I don’t need to be in the running for the Caption This contest, but if you still want to include me, that’s cool too. Trying to play games with peoples’ minds is a dangerous game to play because it often ends up backfiring, or creates certain misgivings. I am a man of little faith, and have no faith in the unknown. My comments have been in an attempt to slight you, but to fulfill a need to know what is really happening. I am sorry for coming off any other way.

Eman - It has become a soap opera and I am guilty for assisting in creating this drama. Because of this blog, I have come to enjoy the “company” of all here. Because of that, I try to in a way protect those people. In my efforts to do so I have becom over zealous and done just the opposite. We all know that when it comes to Ebay, there are in fact some shady people out there. I admit I had suspicions about Jeff. When I read what Pmac posted last night, it somewhat gave validity to what I had been thinking as well and let my thoughts be known. It was not intended to harm anyone, but share information with others for the better good. After reading Jeff’s response, I attempted to explain why I thought he was a man I had met and did apologize for the confusion. I am very cautious about who I buy from on Ebay and do not want to see anyone get burned. I am not the only, or the first to do this, and I won’t be the last either. There are people on here that I do consider to be friends, and I tend to look out for my friends as I would hope they would do for me.

Jeff - I know I said this last night, but I’ll say it again. You are more than welcome to post here all you like, and I thank you for posting last night. I think what would have been more damaging to your professional reputation would have been to say nothing at all. You’ve cleared the air in my book and hope you continue to visit the blog and comment with the rest of us.

Cheffy - Karma does play a big part in our day to day lives. For that reason, I have felt that if things weren’t questioned, the truth may never be known about some things and everybody deserves the right to know. My intentions were not to appear as many of you have seen me, but even the best of intentions sometimes end in the worst results. There is a brotherhood here, a rather eclectic one at that. Some people (like myself) need to be taken with a grain of salt and I thank those of you that have. I wish no ill will on anyone here, even Creator. I am sorry for going about things in the manner of which I have.

To All - I’m sorry for posting this long-ass post. Please take a moment to stretch, grab a cup of coffee, down some hot sauce, whatever gets your rocks off. May you have a great day, and may you enjoy being on the receiving end of any and all pranks this April Fools Day.

Ryan Davis

pmac, I am sure that capsicum understands that when things look fishy you have to sometimes think or in ths case type out loud to put it all together, thankfully he was around to put in his words and straighten things out on his end. I am sure your email will put things to rest. as someone who supports her hubby is his somewhat crazy hot sauce obsession, I am glad that you guys point these “fishy” things out so we can draw our own conclusions. It will save a lot of time with everyone looking out for each other.

dear mrs.pmac,
I am writing this to you because of a request made by your hubby. He would like me to tell you how I support my hubby in his hot sauce collecting craze. It’s quite easy my dear…… Is there something you need or want, make a deal, he gets the sauce you get the diamond(collect the diamond before he gets the hot sauce) see quite easy:D make a wish list of things you want and for every sauce he gets hand him the list with a huge smile and send him out to get it. if the sauce is inexpensive, make sure you have a few things that are inexpensive on the list. hope this helps pmac :P

Ryan, if you are ever headed down to the coast on a weekend, or any day for that matter, stop by our restaurant in Manzanita (Left Coast Siesta Mexican Food) Try some salsa, have a beer, and maybe I will show you my collection ;)

Just drive down the main street of town and look for the neon Hot Sauce sign in the window.
