Pittsburgh Pepper Company Gourmet Wing Sauce

The Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl and the Pittsburgh Pepper Company Wing Sauce served us well in our annual wing off. Why the long delay in this review? Well I wanted to wait until readers could buy it online directly from the Pittsburgh Pepper Company website. And the of course, the 2006 Fiery Foods Show got underway and things got pushed aside. But we’re back on the review track and your tastebuds will be much happier.

Wing Sauces Galore
Winging it for the Super Bowl

Ingredients: Hot Sauce, Red Cayenne Peppers, Vinegar, Water, Salt, Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum, Ascorbic Acid to Preserve Freshness, High Oleic Sunflower Oil, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Spices, Contains 2% or less of Salt, Soy Lecithin, Artifical Color, Hydrolyzed Soy Protien, Autolyzed Yeast Extract (contains Barley, Milk and Egg Components).

Don’t be scared by the ingredient list. Frankly, I don’t know what all the ‘lyzed stuff is all about but it sure doesn’t effect the flavor of this wing sauce.

A closer look at Pittsburghs Offense
Hey, nice flecks you got there.

Pittsburgh Wings

There may have been a winner in the Super Bowl, but our wing off resulted in a tie. A three way tie at that. Six people couldn’t agree on which sauce they thought was the absolute best, so a tie was agreed upon between Pittsburgh Pepper Company, Defcon 2 and the Anchor Bar Honey BBQ (not a real wing sauce in my opinion).

But I’m very glad to see that Pittsburgh Pepper Company can hold its own amongst some more seasoned competitors. With a consistency close to a Frank’s & Butter mix, this gourmet wing sauce evenly coats each wing and still manages to stick around and maintain its flavor. The bite of the vinegar is a bit more then some wing sauces - but it works in this case. It helps to open up your taste buds and your nostrils so the pepper party in your mouth is that much more fun. Try it out on your next slice of pizza as well!

Nick - how does the Pittsburg wing sauce compare in heat to the others? Is it as hot as the Defcon 2? It looks frickin delicious!! I am a huge wing fan and now I’m thinking wings for breakfast.

Well, all I have left is Defcon 1, that might not be the right start to my day this early in the morning. I’ll be popping Tums like TicTacs.

Not much heat to it, but I see on their site they’ve come out with a HOT version. The version I tried was the Original - the heat was more then Defcon 3 - but slightly less then Defcon 2.

I see I have another sauce to try on some wings come payday. I hope I don’t go broke with so many aspirations of sauces to try!

Great news, Thanks Nick. Another local (somewhat, its in PA) Hot Sauce company. Even better, a three way tie.”Six people couldn’t agree on which sauce they thought was the absolute best, so a tie was agreed upon”
I will need to try some of that.

Nick, just a thought, how about a Hot Wing eating contest at the FFS next year?? We could see if Dave is interested, our we could organize it ourselves with the Hotel Catering Director as a little HSB event. We could have different catagories like, the hottest, best flavorful and of course, who could eat the most. The champ could hold the title for one year or whatever. Just something fun to do. Heck some companies might donate sauces to try or whatever. Just a thought.

I’d throw some sauce into the mix, and maybe even join in the eating contest. However, it might be difficult ingesting with a respirator on.

WoW I am getting hungry, just the thought of pureeing some really tasty wings with my favourite wing sauce and sucking it up through a McDona**s sized straw. That would be awesome. Good idea for someone with jaw wired shut too :)

Comment #20:
Comment by chris k (2679) - 3/9/2006 @ 1:16 pm | [ Quote ]

Liquid wings? might work…lol
Another feature of that would be that you can take them anywhere with little or no mess. Wings, anytime, anywhere.

Creator, you working on that?

Comment #21:
Comment by DEFCON Creator (1714) - 3/9/2006 @ 2:14 pm | [ Quote ]

I have to perfect the boneless chicken first. I am having a bit of a problem though. The chickens look like puddles of meat, and I can’t get them to run on the chicken wheel I created. Atrophied meat is always good (veal), but these things would be better off in a water balloon slingshot. Stay tuned…

Comment #22:
Comment by chris k (2679) - 3/9/2006 @ 2:19 pm | [ Quote ]

What is the reason you need to use boneless chicken? Is it to eliminate the step of needing to remove the bones before you puree them, thus improving the manufacturing process to allow you to make more?

Comment #23:
Comment by DEFCON Creator (1714) - 3/9/2006 @ 2:36 pm | [ Quote ]

Exactly.

Comment #24:
Comment by MattUK (713) - 3/9/2006 @ 2:45 pm | [ Quote ]

Creator we don’t want you to die, we need your sauces!! IV chicken wings would surely cause foreign body response and harm you. lol

Comment #25:
Comment by Aaron (1014) - 3/9/2006 @ 3:00 pm | [ Quote ]

Hey you never know if you dont try! haha Sometimes I feel like doing some good wings like that. Just keep me a steady drip all day to keep me going full speed

Comment #26:
Comment by DEFCON Creator (1714) - 3/9/2006 @ 3:51 pm | [ Quote ]

Ahhh Matt, you can rest assured nothing will happen. With the various Dr. Moreau experiments going on as we speak, I have learned to isolate the chicken wing genome, and genetically splice in failsafes to protect me from full body rejection in the form of nanoprobes. Quite interesting actually.

The Pittsburg Pepper Co. has a new garlic hot sauce that is fantastic on your morning eggs. But those cold wings for breakfast sound really good. I love to add the hot to just about everything we eat ,it is great in meatloaf. I am going to be giving tons of this stuff as gifts to every hot head I know. Keep up the good work.
