Retro Review #4 – Blair’s After Death

Blair's After DeathBlair’s After Death is the quintessential hot sauce. Perfect heat blended with perfect taste. No true chili-head should be without this in their fridge. From the trademark skull to the contents inside this is truly a benchmark sauce.

I remember receiving my first bottle years ago. It blew me away. Today I can go through a bottle in a couple of meals. The burn and taste are addicting. It is rare that a sauce can be so unique in flavour yet still maintain the integrity of the original dish.

There are ingredients lists and then there are Blair’s Ingredients lists. Usually you find the run of the mill vinegar, habanero, salt, xanthan, etc but when you look at the ingredients list on a Blair product you can appreciate them individually. They are all there to balance the flavour and have purpose therein.

The After Death ingredients are as follows: Red and orange habanero peppers, vinegar, fresh cayenne peppers, smashed garlic, chipotle peppers, pepper extract, lime juice, cilantro, fresh herbs and spices.

Whatever the dish is you are creating, After Death can add just that little bit more. Add a little for some spark or a couple drops to make a really spicy meal. I have tried it on everything. From wings, steak, pasta and seafood and right out of the bottle. You can’t go wrong with this sauce.

For HSB readers just getting into hot sauces I recommend getting a bottle right away if you haven’t already. I try and keep at least two on hand.

Packaging 10/10
Aroma 9/10
Appearance 9.5/10

I agree completely! This sauce is an all around great product. Its great as an additive or just out of the bottle. I have even tried it in baking such things as cornbread and my green chili cheddar corn muffins with great success. After Death cornbread with a little organic honey on it is hard to beat!

The heat level of this sauce is a happy medium between Sudden Death and Salsa de Muerte (at least to my mouth).

[...] I’m interested in seeing how far I can take this habit. The sauce that I tried last night was “only” 50,000 SHU, about 25 times hotter than Tabasco sauce. The Hot Sauce Blog seemed to like it. [...]
