Review: Goonie Nick is back with CaJohn’s Jolokia Select!

Limited Edition Jolokia Select

Background: It has been roughly 10 months since I have written my last review for the HSB. I just want to begin by saying that HSB is the greatest chili blog site around with the world’s greatest chili heads! I do belong to other blogs in the genres of movies, weather and science but none of these compare to the HSB. The HSB is composed of a great community of companies, individuals, fans, manufacturers, and hobbyists. While I have been inactive in terms of my reviews and comments, I have followed HSB religously every single day!

So what brought me back to becoming active after 10 months? One evening I was browsing ebay and I decided to purchase CaJohn’s Jolokia Select Puree. With this purchase came all the memories of the anticipation, curiousity, and excitement of posting reviews on the HSB. I simply had to try this product and be able to share my feelings with the rest of the hot sauce community.

In the past year I have tried a few products with the Naga Jolokia and felt that the heat levels weren’t quite were it ought to be for a pepper receiving a SHU rating of around 1 million. I have tried CaJohn’s Sauce 10 and Nagasoreass, Danny Cash’s Naga Sabi Bomb, Montego Bay’s Hell’s Inferno, and pepper pods from Mexico Institute. While all these products were great in quality and taste I didn’t feel they were hotter than some of the hottest natural sauces on the market.

I feel that in terms of pure heat for a natural sauce the top 3 are CaJohn’s Habanero Select, Fatalii Select, and CaJohn’s No Naga Sauce 10. (Not in any exact order) (No Naga Sauce 10 went on to become a manufactured product titled, “Scorch”. CaJohn informed me that I did play a significant role in his decision. I stated in my reviews of Sauce 10 and No Naga Sauce 10, that I honestly felt that No Naga Sauce 10 (Red Savina, Fatalii, and the Orange Habaneo) was actually hotter than Sauce 10 (Red Savina, Fatalii, Orange Habanero and Jolokia.) However, it is important to note that those products did contain other ingredients in them, than the jolokia, which makes it impossible to give a fair assessment of the heat level of the jolokia, in sauce form. With this being said, here I am back at what I enjoy doing!

Label: A white label with orange trim is wrapped around a traditional 5 oz. bottle. On the front of the label is a flame with JOLOKIA below it. To the right of the front label is CaJohn’s company address. To the left of the front of the label is Jolokia Select Puree, Warning Extreme Heat!!!, World’s Hottest Chile! The label is very similar to other limited edition or trial runs of CaJohn’s sauces.

Ingredients: Jolokia Chiles, Vinegar

Appearance: The sauce is close to a 50-50 mix of orange and brown in terms of color. I am able to see what might appear to be as other ingredients such as garlic, onion, black pepper, etc. However, this is not the case because this sauce was created from reconstituting dried Jolokia chilies and vinegar. The ratio is 80% pepper and 20% vinegar which is the recipe CaJohn uses for all his Select Purees! I remember conversing with CaJohn a few months ago where he informed me that the process of this sauce would take time as he was waiting for the Jolokia chiles directly from the source itself, India.

Odor: After opening the cap and taking a smell of the sauce I was actually very pleased. This sauce smells great! The sauce has a very similar fruity smell to the dried pods that I have had. It is not as fruity, due to some vinegar, but nevertheless still very fruity. I gave this sauce to a friend of mine, who has never had hot sauces and told them to compare Jolokia Select to Jolokia Pods and they responded, “That it is just about the same.” If I had to be held at gunpoint and compare it to another habanero, in terms of odor, I would say it resembles the chocolate habanero somewhat. However, the chocolate habanero has more of a BBQ rich and deep odor as compared to the fruity odor of the Jolokia.

Taste: I figured that pizza would be perfect for this sauce. In my past reviews I have always stated that if a hot sauce is good on pizza, then hell it should be good on just about any other type of food. After I tried this hot sauce I was actually pleased with what I encountered. The sauce did not take away from the pizza at all and it wasn’t a typical habanero flavor that one would expect from a hot sauce or a puree. The sauce had a similiar taste to what one would expect based on having any experience with the aroma. The taste was really unique and enjoyable making you want more. However, I have to say that that taste was a little weaker than the aroma, which was perfect since you still were able to taste the flavors of the cheese and tomato sauce. What I like about this pepper is that it doesn’t simply taste like a standard puree. This conclusion leads me to state that I will be using this on wings, pizza, tacos, stir-fries, etc. I might even add a little to some soups because I really think that the hot broth might bring out the flavors of this pepper a little more than what it has straight out of the bottle.

Heat: The heat was definitely the category that I was most interested in when coming across this hot sauce from CaJohn. After having the 1st slice I really didn’t feel the heat that much as compared to some of the other hot sauces out there that are natural but very hot. However, I definitely did recognize that there was a good amount of heat here. I had a phone call and had to wait 10 mins before I could get my next slice. Before doing that I did feel the heat kick in. With his sauce it is different from many others in that you don’t get the straight up blast which means good things for the ones that like to enjoy their food before sweating. After the second slice I did begin to bead up with some sweat above my brow. I was impressed with this because from the pics you can see that I definitely didn’t use as much sauce as you might expect from my past reviews. After my third slice I did begin to feel the high that hot sauce can provide. I was sweating and it was definitely just as hot as the hottest natural sauces that I have tried. In the end, this sauce was able to play games with my mind in making me sweat but then feeling cold afterwards. The amount I had to use to get this feeling was half of what I had to use in the past with the other hottest natural sauces I have tried. CaJohn’s Jolokia Select is the hottest natural sauce out there!

Packaging 9/10
Aroma 10/10
Taste 9.5/10
Appearance 9.5/10
Heat 10/10

Overall 9.5

“this sauce was able to play games with my mind in making me sweat but then feeling cold afterwards”

Great review. Anybody that can create a sauce that plays with your mind is a Culinary Genius! I’ve never tried any of CaJohn’s products but plenty of people have recommended them. Are there one or two products in his arsenal that you suggest me trying first?

All of his booze infused BBQ sauces rock! Oaxacan is hard to keep around very long, cause it’s so damned tasty (like a cumin heavy taco sauce with a mild heat level). Fatalii fire has an up front burn and flavorful bite of fataliis and vinegar. NagaSaurus is a tomato naga sauce, which by the way makes one hell of a delicious pizza sauce. His Killer sauces are sweet hot (hotter than you will ever see from jalapenos or cayenne) and delicious. For a superhot my favorite is his Lethal Ingestion, extract burn without extract flavor.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the comments and making me feel welcome! I am glad the review came out ok. I almost thought that I was “In the midst of hanging up my hot sauces”! NEVER! Tonight I will finish the bottle of Jolokia Select. It is great as CaJohn always is. Can’t wait to try Pure Death By Blairs, excellent review by Nick L on that one.

My enthusiasm towards hot sauce is always still there.

Cheers,
GoonieNick

definitly try the fatali fire. i also really liked the no naga 10 but i havent tried the regular yet. i bought the no naga 10 after reading gonnienicks coment about it being hotter than the regular. if you want to try one of his extract sauces get some hell no it tastes alot better than his other extract sauces and if you get a hell no/hell yes set the hell yes is (i beleive) scorch with 3 times the jolokies in it. and scorch is the same as no naga 10 which i just said was good.
nice review to btw, i have only read a few of your reviews before your 10 month break but it definitly seems like we got similar tastes in hot sauce so anything you recomend i will be willing to give a shot.

The Black Mamba is great stuff if you are looking for an extract sauce… In terms of pure heat without that much in losing taste of the food. Remember you only need a drop of this stuff!

Looks like I’m definietly going to have to try Frost Bite as well as all of CaJohns sauces. I had a teaspoon of Cajohn’s Vicious Viper last night and it light me up in a good way. I’m not a big extract freak but it’s interesting to see how people use while keeping the favor. Thanks for the input everyone.

I’ve got to make up my mind on WOF and this terrible economy isn’t helping us make that decision. The economy would probably get a whole lot better if some unknown person would stop buying up and controlling commodities like rice (LOL).

I think HenryK has a point that I want to bring up again to the good people that now run this board. Not counting the April Fool’s Day Heinz ketchup review, we have had 2 reviews of a hot sauce product since then. One was Blair’s and the other one is CaJohn’s. Is HSB going to change its format? Help the companies that have had some form of success and leave the newer, struggling companies out in the cold?

I signed onto this great blog 1 year ago tomorrow, and it seems to have slowed the amount of reviews to a crawl. Are the new HSB owners slacking or is it the reviewers? Perhaps there is no companies out there that want their product(s) reviewed. I love coming here and reading the reviews from the talented review staff, but how about telling us about some other companies that are just trying to make a name for themselves. I tasted some amazing products at the Fiery Food Show, and I hope they get their due sometime soon on HSB.

I know that this might seem like a knock on HSB, but its more of a wakeup call. Last year I was spending each day looking forward to what would be posted, but now why not make it 1 day a week?

I would like to hear from the reviewer. Have you submitted reviews to HSB? Waiting on products? Do you guys know what is happening behind the scenes?

Guys & Gals -
Let me interject a few things here - 1st, the HSB isn’t under new ownership - it’s still just me. Which is part of the problem with the lack of updates lately - I’ve been busier then heck at work, then with the house ect.. I do have a pile of new products up for review from the smaller guys and I’ve got more sauces to send out the the reviewers as well. If anyone wants to chip in with either reviews or just general stuff, just let me know. This site is about the community and it takes a community to keep it running!

Also on a happier note - we’re planning a wedding and one heck of a party (details to be announced once we figure them out)

Manufacturer here, so I’ll not do reviews ;-)

Happy to submit mine for review though- even to the dreaded ‘blind reviewer’ :-)

Somebody drop me a note with an address, a promise to write a review within a reasonable amount of time, your heat preference (habanero, extract, Louisianna, BBQ, etc) and I’ll send some sauce. Just make sure the note has ‘chile pepper’ in the subject header or I’ll never see it.

Ummm… provided of course, that this is okay with Nick.

If anyone wants to chip in with either reviews or just general stuff, just let me know. This site is about the community and it takes a community to keep it running!

Also on a happier note - we’re planning a wedding and one heck of a party (details to be announced once we figure them out)

My bad on the new mgmt statement, Nick. It is good to hear the engine to the machine is still working. On another note, congrats on the happy announcement. You are talking about the little lady and not some hot sauce you have fallen in love with, right? :D

Do you guys know what is happening behind the scenes?

i have got 3 reviews turned in waiting to be published. 2 of the threee are multi reviews though and most likely waiting on others. i have one more to review and have been putting it off because i figure as long as i got at least one submitted there is no rush, if that one got posted i would do the remaining one emediatly so he wasnt waiting on me. even though it hasnt been put up i plan on doing that review in the next couple days though.

Jim, I don’t want to review your product, I’d just like to eat it. I can take photos of me eating it, but I just want to eat it.
I need your Habanero BBQ sauce. I need to get in touch. :)

I said this elsewhere, and I’ll say it again. If it wasn’t for Nick, Anthony and HSB, Droolin’ Devil and Uncle Big’s products wouldn’t have gotten the exposure out of the gate that they did. For that, I am forever thankful.

I know Nick is busier than a 1 legged cat trying to bury a turd on a frozen pond (God I love that one) as I have been in the same boat. New house, new job, wedding planning, new baby, etc, that stuff gets in the way. Nick doesn’t do this to make money, he does it for the love of the hot sauce industry. That must be applauded, just like The Hot Zone Online, Taste The Fear, The Hot Pepper and others. It’s not a revenue generating machine and therefore can sometimes be a labour of love, well most of the time who am I kidding.
I would like to see more action on HSB as I refer a tonne of people to it and other sites as well, these boards are great for the community.
Again, I know Nick does what he can and I applaud that, but he’s got other weapons in his arsenal and they should step up and get content posted to keep things fresh. Those mods that can post should post and try and keep it neutral and not self serving if possible please, that would be great. ;)
Ok, I’m done.
Congrats Nick and The Wife. Details soon? Nice.

Uncle Big has said it best. Let me lob a suggestion out to Nick and some of the regulars. Would a few of you be willing to be appointed by Nick to be the “enforcers”? It would work like this; Nick shares with you what he has shipped, when, and to whom. Your little committee of “enforcers” is responsible for divvying up the list and keeping in touch with the reviewers…OK, hounding the reviewers…to get their reviews in timely. I see industry people taking on this role with no conflict of interest.

I will be the first to admit that if nobody is bugging me to do the reviews, I procrastinate. If Nick or one of his appointed “enforcers” sent me a message once in a while, I would be much better about keeping up.

What say you?

Can I nominate Blane as an enforcer? He’s good at yelling at people. As an added bit of motivation, he would even provide the services of stalking and death threats for free but only for this limited time offer. Act now before it’s too late….

Not helpful. You have 3 unpaid volunteer reviewers admitting they are slammed with other stuff and need a little prodding to get the reviews done. This is probably true of most of the reviewers. Just trying to find a way to help facilitate that.

Buddah,

Although you post may have been somewhat incorrect in your facts and may even have rubbed a few people the wrong way, you are quite correct that there has been a lack of consistent and new reviews on this blog. It is true that we are all busy and it’s easy to stand behind that as an excuse. It seems though that your comments have stirred up the bees nest a bit and action is already being taken to get things back on track. Thanks for the well deserved kick in the butt.

I have met so many fine people in this hot sauce industry and I just want to see them succeed. This is the most popular site for Chileheads and if you give the little guy exposure, then you might help them a lot. I know the influence it has had on me over the past year. If I provided the necessary “kick” as you said, then wonderful. Only time will tell.

If all else fails, I know a little growing website that might be able to help those that want to get some spotlight. :D

Blog Police? Enforcers? The Board?

Interesting actions. Sounds more like news reports about China and Tibet than a hot sauce site.
