Review: Habby Habanero’s Tropical Heat Hot Sauce

Please welcome Newman to the HSB with his first review! Having never heard of Habby Habanero’s, I’m glad to read a review of it, has anyone else ever tried this sauce? Welcome to the HSB Newman!

Packaging works on me. The clever anecdotes and design always work their magic, just as the marketing guru behind it had planned.

Habby Habanero Tropical Heat Hot Sauce

As for Habby Habanero’s? Its package is no different. The distinctive style of Tropical Heat, with its cabana-suit clad spokesman/gangster, cried out to me from the Jungle Jim’s shelf. I was completely content keeping this “funny for all the wrong reasons” sauce in my collection unopened as a conversation piece forever. Until I read the ingredients.

Ingredients: Peaches, Mustard (Distilled Water, Mustard Seed, Salt, Spices), Brown Sugar, Habanero Peppers, Vinegar, Spices.

Habby Habanero Tropical Heat Hot Sauce

The peaches threw a curve ball into the mix, and as a rule I like to see the peppers a little higher on the list. So I must admit that I was skeptical at best.

Bouquet (smell): After cracking open the bottle, the entire room filled with a distinct – and unexpected – aroma of curry. No peaches. No peppers. No mustard. Just curry and plenty of it.

Texture: It pours much thinner than it moves in the bottle, so there’s not much “coating” action, and the visible spices are all that stick to the plate.

Habby Habanero Tropical Heat Hot Sauce

Taste: I made a pot of Haitian rice under the guise that this sauce would have a tropical personality. I was wrong. After the first bite, I definitely recognized the curry flavor but it took a decided back seat to the peaches. The habanero, however, is practically lost in this strange mix. I found myself wondering if the little heat that was present was simply from the curry and the peppers just get smothered in this flavor log-jam. But, the silver lining is that it could make a really nice glaze for baked chicken or on top of jasmine rice.

Medal Round (Ratings):
Package: Weirdly A Gold
Heat: An Easy Bronze
Taste: A Bronze

Overall: It scores a bronze

Well done Newman. I too like the Olympic rating system.
No pesky numbers and controversial 10/10’s from you. That’s dope.
Hopefully the Newmanian Rating Systems catches on.
Very niiiicccee!!

I don’t get the rating system. Gold, Silver, Bronze = 1st, 2nd, 3rd. So what’s it competing against to earn the ratings? So it’s actually a scale of 1-3 instead of 1-10? Scales and ratings, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, it makes no sense to me. Either you like it, or you don’t. It’s hot, or it’s not. No matter what you use, the reader still has to read the review to understand the rating. And sometimes that makes no sense. I don’t see the humor in the label that was mentioned, so the rating there is confusing to me. Other than the rating, it’s a great review.

Just my 2 cents. Great job Newman. Really enjoyed reading about a sauce that you wouldn’t normally see. Just remember not to take comments like mine to heart. It’s just an opinion and comment. Nothing more.

No, I understand. My wife tried to tell me that an explanation for the rating system was needed, but I didn’t listen. There are 4 possible awards (gold, silver, bronze, and no medal) The overall score is what’s important. To be awarded an overall gold, a sauce would need to sweep the three categories (Package, heat, taste) with golds.

I agree UB. Nice change from numbers fiasco we’ve all become accustomed too. Now instead of people getting pissed about a sauce getting a “10″ they can get pissed about it getting a “gold”!

Good first review Newman, I hope you’ve got the tough skin needed to be a reviewer! Would hate to see another lost because of an opinion or ten that aren’t desireable. Hang in there!

Hey yeah, that reminds me, where the hell is GoonieNick?
He just vanished, anyone know if he’s ok?
Probably not a popular question, but I wanted to send that little bugger some Serial Killer to try. Haven’t seen hide nor hair of him in like forever.
Anyone???

Hey Huv,
Can you piggyback some FKS with the Tamales or what?
I haven’t forgot about you (ok, maybe I did), I just didn’t make the geographical connection.
Shoot me pricing, I think we can work something out.

FKS gets a Gold rating on the Newmanian Rating system in UB’s books baby!!

More like the size of a condo. She’s doing fine. The heat was kickin’ our azzez so we got central air installed (ouch that’s a pricey meatball) but nothings too good for my lady.
Early September will see the pitter patter of little feet in the UBK casa.
Hope all is well at THT Central.

Glad to hear all is well. A happy pregnant Mrs. is a happy UB daddy in the making!

THT is doing great, been real busy with the summer sales. Hot and humid as ever here though. Your Ac is sounding real good right about now.
