Review: Monty’s Gourmet Foods Green Scream Jalapeno Hot Sauce
Posted on 11.10.06 by Ron Levi @ 7:46 am | Comments: |
« « Previous | Review: Longbranch Trading Company – Longbranch Original » »

Below is a review from a potential reviewer here on the HSB. This reviewer is also a manufacturer (not of this sauce of course) so he has additional insights to bring to the reviewing table. I would like the readers of the HSB to provide feedback on the review since you are the folks reading here everyday. ~ Nick

Green Scream Hot SauceBeing an avid hot sauce eater, every now and then I find myself temporarily departing the blazing realm of the Habanero in search of something that teases me with slightly less heat and more complex flavors. Since this sauce took a second place Scovie in the Specialty Chile category I figured it might be worth the time and taste buds. IT WAS!

Initial Impression: When I first approached the bottle I was intrigued by the spiffy little lizard on the label. Upon closer investigation I came to learn, from the side panel, that the art was created by no other that the famous Dave Kellett. For those of you whom might not know Mr. Kellett, he is the creator of the well known Sheldon Comic strip. I really liked the art; this little lizard with his flaming chili in hand, and his devilish grin taunting you as if he is daring you to try his sauce.

Ingredients: Jalapeno Peppers, Tomatillo, Onions, Vinegar, Garlic, Cilantro, Spices, Salt, Xanthan Gum. This ingredient list checks out A-OK with me. All natural, no preservatives, and peppers are the first ingredient in this list.

Appearance: This sauce has an impressive appearance. It has a nice natural looking green color, no freaky kryptonite, day glo. Upon closer inspection you can see little bits of garlic and spice, and tiny little bits of cilantro. It has a thick yet smooth texture and a slightly glossy appearance. This is without a doubt one of the sexiest jalapeno sauces I have ever seen. I’m getting excited about tasting it!

Green Scream

Aroma: WOW! That’s how I feel about the way this sauce smells. When I uncap this bottle and take a healthy whiff at the neck my mouth instantly starts to water. You can actually smell this sauce in layers. I have the bottle uncapped and in front of me as I type this review. So here is what I smell; Jalapeno is definitely the first thing to hit your nose, followed by garlic and onion and then the tangy tomatillo comes through. A couple of more whiffs and you can clearly pick out some spices, to me it seems like chili powder and maybe cumin. Let’s Eat!

Taste: Jalapenos and tomatillo are a classic combination; this sauce gets the balance perfectly. The tangy tomatillo zaps the tip and sides of your tongue while the jalapeno heat kind of lingers on the center of your tongue and the roof of your mouth. There are garlicky flavors and cilantro and spices bounce around your mouth. You will actually taste every ingredient as it pops out and makes a guest appearance. On the heat scale of 1-10 I would give this sauce about a 5. While it might be little light in the heat department for the Chile-head that is always looking for liquid napalm, it is a very well balanced sauce and does not get lost in food.

Green Scream

The Food Test: Pizza was the weapon of choice for this sauce. Bad pizza at that, I won’t name names, but this is a $5 pizza from a warming oven. You can see from the picture I really wanted the sauce to fix the pizza, and guess what, it did! It was actually so good I ended up eating about 4 slices and consumed half the bottle of sauce. What a great fusion. The flavors in this sauce blended perfectly with the cardboard pizza and made it pleasurable. I figured if Green Scream can make this meal enjoyable, it is worth every penny I spent on it!

Conclusion: Tangy and spicy, green and fresh. This is one of the finest jalapeno sauces I have ever tasted. Alone, it was alive in my mouth showing off its complexity. On Food, it has the ability to revive any dish and bring happy hot sauce joo joo to your mouth. Whether it’s a cardboard pizza, your favorite omelet, a taco, burrito, or an awesome meal cooked by your Mom, Monty’s Gourmet Foods Green Scream Jalapeno Sauce will add flavor and excitement to anything it touches.

Very well written and nice presentation of the bottle and sauce. The pictures and review convey the exact same thing, no confusion with any part of the review. Good job.

Very good review style and delivery.

A good hot sauce should be able to make a 3 week old cow pie palatable and it sounds like this is one of those sauces. Excellent use of crappy pizza as the test subject. I will have to investigate this Monty character in great detail.

Now to play devil’s advocate. Question to Nick, couldn’t there be a perceived conflict of interest having a sauce manufacturer as a reviewer? I don’t see it as being an issue, but other manufacturers submitting sauces for review might feel that being critiqued by a “competitor” in the industry could put them at a disadvantage.

It’s like Ford critiquing GM. Could jealousy or a feeling of superiority taint the reviewers opinion of a product if put in a situation where their opinion is to be taken at face value by the masses.

I’m not saying this reviewer would have such prejudices or pettiness, but things could get sticky if the reviewer gives a bad review and the reviewee sees it as the aforementioned jealousy or superiority complex.

To the opposite end of the spectrum, the reviewer having the experience and savvy of being in the industry as a manufacturer would add that much more credibility and “star power” to their review. So I see your point on having this potential reviewer critique products. Who is it? Is it Blair?? Cajohn?? Arizona Jack?? Come on inquiring minds want to know!! :-) Regardless, I think the reviews would be fair and impartial.

I don’t want to sound like a pr*ck or worse a conspiracy theorist, but I’m just thinking out loud here. One of my customers read the review this morning and came in to chat with me about.

Again, and for the record, I think the review was exceptionally fair and well written and would have been happy to have them review one of our products.

Anyone else have any thoughts along these lines or am I on crack??

Hmm, I’ve typed myself into a quite a conundrum here, a quandry you might say. I must return to the Fortress of Peppertude and think upon this some more.

I just meant that everything fit together very well. My statements were made toward this review and this review only. Sorry for the confusion Creator. :)

Big, I think both sides of your argument could be taken very easily. However, a consumer could be just as biased if they personally know the manufacturer, and like or dislike them. I think people are reading in just a bit too much into these things. Every sauce that is critiqued may be completely different to another person. Kind of like listening to movie critics to pick and choose the movies you want to go to (The mainstream critics hated A Clockwork Orange, and it’s my favorite movie).

The reviewers personal tastes aside, I think most of the reviews give a good all-around view of the sauce, and the pictures backup a lot of what they have to say. Review in all don’t force you to go out and either get the product or tell you not to, they are just an information resource.

That being said, time to go grab a beer….

Creator,
You hit the nail on the head my diabolic little friend.

I neglected to mention a potential bias on the part of a Joe Public reviewer, that is very true. I was getting too long winded and edited that part.

Different strokes for different folks is the order of the day. The reviews on HSB have always been fair in my opinion and as I stated yesterday my tastes may differ from the reviewers, but the reviewers taste may be inline with the masses, so again I ask you, what the f*ck to I know? Hee hee.

Have a couple of wobbly pops for me. Uncle Big will be dry for 6 years come January 2nd. Woo Hoo! Praise the Lord and pass the Diet Coke!

Congrats on the dry spell, oh Evil Alliance partner. :)

Reading the neverending ad nauseum criticism of the reviewers is funny at best. I find it odd that virtually all the people citicizing the reviewers don’t do reviews, that most definitely adds to the humor of it all.

Kind of like the 500-pound behemoth at a hockey game yelling at the guys on the ice that he could play better, whilst gease runs between his multiple chins during his personal gluttony marathon with processed meat sticks, a bucket of Bon-Bons and fruit-flavored water. Good visual, eh?

I could not be a reviewer, first off because I am biased as hell when it comes to a couple of manufacturers. with that said refardless of who did the label, i think it’s generic and it would not catch my eye on a shelf. however the review was great, it kept me interested all the way to the end. the sauce looks yummy. great job on the review.

Called the Sandia Resort:
Pressed 1 for English, then 5-6 other numbers, finally got to poker room manager, left a message. Private tables / rooms are available for conventions and groups. I’ll keep ya posted as it comes my way.

I will find out what the rules are for a private poker table set-up would cost with a house dealer. Maybe just a pot/rake or per hour fee, but I’ll find out.
PS, HUV: Most all casin o’s give FREE BEER to the gamblers !!!

I found some boobie bars! My buddy Chumly and I would be more than happy to lead everyone on a tour.

Hate to bust ya bubbles here but Huv, close your ears….there is no alcoholic beverages allowed in the game area at the Sandia. I know, I know….makes me cringe too.

I know. And the bar that is close to the cas**o gets SUPER crowded and lines form to get in. I agree……it is an evil rule. We asked last year why and they said that for that particular Inidan Reservation to be able to run a gaming place, they were not allowed to serve any b**ze. I like to get my drink and game on at the same time!

WOW, never thought to ask that, Jodie, you are right. Some In dian Cas inos here allow it, some don’t. Ugh Ohh, further investigation is in order.
Good Catch, glad we caught it early to make a plan B.

Plan B: Game is in Huvasons room after the show, since he won the Scovie and will probably sell a sh*tload of sauce, he will supply all the beverages and tip the house staff that serves them to us. Thanks Huv, like Sonyo says, YOU RAWK !!!!

NO, I still need a helmet! LOL You know, the same old same old with the chair races. Lisa showed up with the battery operated motorcycle even when we told her that she had to have a chair! So Kristi and I cut the wire to the battery. LOL So while Lisa was trying to figure out what was wrong with her wheels, Kristi and I started down the driveway. Kristi tried to chair block me but wound up spinning out of control, going down the rest of the driveway backwards, hit a pebble, and toppled over. Then, I laughed so hard, lost control of my own chair and fell right over her! Of course while we were laughing and falling over each other Lisa finished off the last of our SoCo and lime (it did teach us not to cut her battery wire ever again ;-) ) You have no idea what you missed!
