I have come to the conclusion that Mexican Hot Sauces come in two categories. Incredible or Awful. There was some trepidation in opening up this one as Nick had mentioned he had picked up a few sauces at convenience stores during his vacation in California. I received a pretty good bunch of sauces and I saw something among the bottles of his travels that would discern in which category of Incredible and awful a sauce would fit in. It may be stereotyping but there is a definite pattern here and if you follow my next few reviews of these sauces you will see what I mean.
I hold El Yucateco as the stalwart of Mexican Sauces. It is just really good and it is always my reference point when reviewing these types of sauces. I saw some similarities between this one and El Yucateco. It had a good label, nutritional information an over all care for how it looked. The manufacturers of this apparently care about their product.
Ingredients: Habanero Peppers, Salt, Spices, Xanthan Gum, Vinegar, Sodium Benzoate as a preservative it may contain some of these colours, Yellow colour FD&C No5, Yellow Colour FD&C No6, Red Colour FD&C No 40.
I didn’t get too much in terms or aroma. The lid limiter made sure of that. A look at the ingredients made it apparent that I wasn’t getting in over my head with anything here so I liberally splashed it onto my plate to accompany some chicken I made.
The sauce looks fabulous. It is bright and fresh and almost velvety in texture. There are no visible pieces and I think it would be better off they removed the stopper as the sauce is thick enough to be free poured and I didn’t even have it in fridge prior to trying it.

The taste is what I expected and what I was craving for. It was a brilliant splash of moderate heat and a fresh habanero taste without too much vinegar interference. The heat was impressive for a sauce that didn’t tout itself as being really hot. Don’t get me wrong it isn’t a scorcher but this would make a damn fine table sauce for all occasions.
If you see this in your local store make sure to give it a try!

Green El Yucateco is my favorite sauce, overall, it has never gone wrong on anything I put it on. Is anyone going to review it? Or one of the others maybe Mayan, delicous.
I’m sure that every guy that enjoys spicy sauces in a jar thinks that he is an expert. Maybe some are, but not everyone has the pallet to know the difference between just plain hot and incredibly good. My mom bought me a case of “Salsa Habanero” when she was in Arizona about 6 years ago. I had never tried this before, but she knew I am a big connoisseur of hot sauces.
Well, all my other sauces (20+) sitting in my fridge barely ever got use again, and only expired. I ran out this past year and bought multiple varieties of sauces, but could not replace it or even come close to finding an alternative; as I have not been able to find it in Colorado. This is how I ran across this web site trying to order it online. I have many awesome recipes for this stuff, and I will come back to share some of them another time. First, I need to figure out where to buy this stuff.

I too found this website while searching for an online place to buy this hot sauce. Click on the link for the best place I’ve found so far. Like so many awesome Mexican hot sauces, I found this one in a rundown looking Mexican grocery store somewhere in a random part of LA. It’s fairly spicy if you are used to serrano pepper based hot sauces like Cholula or Tapatia, but the heat is about average for a Habanero based hot sauce.
It’s got a nice aftertaste as well - the typical cumin flavor of Mexican hotsauces but also the brightness of Habeneros.
This is one of my favorite hot sauces right now.

I also found this website looking where to buy this sauce. I am from India and love SPICY stuff. This is by far the best hot mexican sauce I’ve ever had. The website written on the bottle www.salsascastillo.com doesn’t work.

Hey Anthony…Good mention on the mexican sauces. I have a friend who loves El Yucateo.. To me it is too thin or bland I dont know.. I guess I am not a big fan of mexican sauces overall.
