Hey guys- you’ve got a couple of problems with your label that could land you in some serious trouble. My understanding of the allergen food regs that went into effect last year, you’re required to spell out what is in Worcesteshire sauce- some of them contain a listed allergen. There are NO exceptions to this rule and if the wrong folks see that label, you’re looking at a Class One recall. That’ll cost you thousands- ask CaJohn And, while you’re reprinting them, you need the little (R) after Red Savina(R).

So many 10′s, it’s almost hard to believe.

Unless this is the best sauce you’ve EVER had – bar none – in ANY way, I wouldn’t have been so easy to throw out tens.

Loco Luna’s Lava Sauces have received many great reviews and several high 9+’s on the HSB, but never an overall perfect score. As a manufacturer, I’d love to see an overall 10.

As a consumer, I don’t personally believe that a perfect 10 is possible. That is just my opinion however. Everyone critics things slightly differently and we all have different likes and dislikes.

I think Gildo has every right to hit this with a 10 so long as he honestly thinks that it is justified (and there is no reason to think that he does not), and he is following the published HSB rating guidelines.

It would be nice to think that the ratings have a high degree of uniformity in criteria (thus Nick’s rating guidance), but like I said, we are all different in our preferences. We just have to get to know the raters over time to see what their particular bent is.

So for me, I have found no 10′s, but it is for others to determine if they have found any.

True that. We have Worcesteshire sauce in some of our stuff, and our ingredient list is thus huge. Check out the bottle.

just curious how you took them? did they offend you? or did you just take them, as his opinion to question? personally i don’t truly care what a reviewer rates the sauce at on the scale, because if something that interests me, i’m going to try it for myself. everyone’s taste can be so different. but it’s good to read the reviews, to learn about other sauces out there, ingredients, etc….then i can decide if i want to try them or not.

I found his comments to lack profesionalism, integrity and maturity. I appreciate constructive criticism and certainly don’t mind when people disagree with me — we all have our own opinions. I do however get peeved when people get flippant and ridicule others for no good reason.

I’m just curious why everyone is so pi$$ed off about one persons comments, that not only is he banned, but just the mention of his name gets posts blocked. in my own opinion, take it for what it’s worth (not much, i’m just a dumb polack), but if someone is going to review items and publicly post them, then they need to be able to handle any and all feedback from that review. wether it be intelligent, mature, professional, stupid, absurd or what not. that just comes with the territory (and no this is pointed at no reviewer specifically at all, but i’m sure this will get me banned as someone will take it personally). as for missing posts, i can’t believe that what i posted had any grounds whatsoever for deletion (see above, it didn’t get deleted when repeated in a different thread) and that noone could come forward to tell me why or who deleted it. could have been an accident…hint…hint…someone use that as an excuse….lol

I hear ya Paul. I feel the same way. I’m all for keeping inappropriate behavior off of the site, but there needs to be some uniformity to it. Lots of content that’s questionable in taste gets put up for the world to see, but let someone state an opinion that someone disagrees with and everything goes to hell. Does’t make sense to me. To see that you and Brian had comments removed is just mind boggling. two of the nicest and well spoken guys on the blog. Weird.

I agree. Brant has been a valued member of the HSB community and we will be fortunate to keep it that way. Anyone who has meet him knows that he is a great guy. This all seems a little (a lot) extreme.

Well said Brian. That’s exactly the point I was trying to make on the M&C label. No person was targeted with it, just that the review itself is as subject to an opinion as the sauce in the review. I think it’s important to be able to comment on the review as a whole, the sauce, the review, and th reviewer. it’s all there to see, so it should all be subject to comment. My 2 cents.

Holy crap, look what I started. Listen up, I want to put the kabash on this because it really has spun out of control. First of all, I stand behind my review and the 10/10. I know food and sauces and the Sweet Sunshine is deserving of the marks I gave it. Second. I really don’t care what Bla-ne or anyone else thinks of the review. I appreciate the feedback, good or bad, and expect both. What I don’t appreciate it when feedback is delivered in a harsh or disrespectful manner. We are all adults and professionals and I really expect more. I met most of you in NM and really had a great time hanging out and getting to know you. Let’s just keep some sort of civility to all of this. I think we owe ourselves that much.

I couldnt agree more with this comment.

I watched some of this unfold yesterday and kept my mouth shut. All of this “talk” (Im being nice here) of being censored, and everyone jumping the gun and making accusations isnt cool! Then run off to the forum and write a post bashing the exact site that brought so many good times, laughs, ideas, and friends together. Talk about stabbing each other in the back? That sure didn’t take long, did it? That says alot right there.
Yeah, people have a right to their opinions, and by the way, Nick does an EXCELLENT job of letting you all voice them on here. To say most of the comments in the later part of this post are / were inappropriate is an understatement. Sure, I bet there is more to this story as some things had been deleted, and is part of the reason for all the negativity. I think when this type of issue arises, there needs a bit more integrity and control in all of us, and as Nick said “behaving like 2yr olds the last two days” isn’t the way to handle it. Looking back at what I saw, there was a lot of behavior I wouldn’t be to proud of. Its sad.
The HSB has come a long way, and is many things to many people. What I think we saw or read yesterday is a direction no one that comments (or reads) on here should be proud of. There is no finger pointing going on. Just sit back and take a long look at what it’s becoming on here. Those of us that have been here a long time know exactly what I mean.
Yes there is room for disagreements, and even questioning others opinions, but not in a way that has ended it all up like this.
Keep the HSB at the top and lets NOT show the world we don’t care how we are viewed.

Well Said!!! I think all this BS can end if ANTHONY would keep his fingers off the delete buttons.I also agree that if there was not drama like this most of these reviews would be looked at once or twice.Cant we all just get along?..I hope not!!! cause this would be one boring place to visit

First of all, it is NOT my job to censor what is said on the HSB and regardless of what some may think, I dont. If some “bad” words are used, and get through, then yes, I will. You are all old enough (I thought) to be responsible for what you say and do.

Secondly, I dont have access to what was deleted, nor can I see what was there before, or who if anyone deleted anything. Once it is gone, its gone. So all accusations about someone deleting comments, or being banned cannot be verified by me. So I cannot provide direction on these questions. And yes Blane, you must feel a little guilty, otherwise you wouldnt be talking about spades. What I dont like is that the attitudes and actions were all quickly against the HSB. Instead of asking Nick and waiting for an answer, some were quick to bring negativity and hostility to the blog, and towards others. You claim to take pride in the fact you got a post with 5 comments and turned it into a post with over 100 by fueling the thread with false accusations. Ie BL-NE has been banned. When in fact this was untrue. As we know now, this was a mistake as Nick has cleared this up on the forum this morning.
Not once do I see on here an apology to Nick for saying what you did about the HSB on the forum last night.

Maybe this already exists, but I think it would be nice to have a Main Menu item that indexed the Reviewers and gave a profile on each of them. I know that there are profiles of some of them, but does this exist for ALL reviewers? A mandatory profile for each reviewer would help folks know where they are coming from a little better. Just my $0.02.

I knew there were a few 10/10 reviews out there, but couldn’t find them. with the help of a few reviewers & readers, I’ve been putting together a section of the site that will list out all the reviews by name, rating, heat level, reviewer, date, type, primary pepper & maker. And anyone can sort by any of the criteria I just listed out. More of a reference section for people to utilize then anything.

And as for everything else, I haven’t gotten involved and don’t want to at all, I don’t want everyone to get along or “follow” because that wouldn’t be any fun. Lord knows we’ve had some epic battles here and this is just one of em, this one just happened to suck more people into then necessary.

To qwell the only issue I can effect (cause you can’t make people like each other), I let the HSB Exec. Board vote on whether or not mods can delete/edit comments. The consensus agreed and until future notice, no one can delete comments. You can email board @ hotsauceblog.com with any questions or issues with any comments in the future. That email address goes to each of the board members and they will take over the “moderation” of comments. We’re all here for the same reason, hot sauce and hot foods so you all have one thing in common, like it or not.

And I’ll be adding a page for everyone to see the “flagged” words to make sure there are no questions about what will and won’t get through.

Yup! That would be the “Hot Sauce Underground” bottle. Thanks Jack! Eman, ChrisK, Angry Pepper (Ryan), and myself (Cape Fear), did this project just for the fun of it. It received a 10/10 by Vic as an example of “fellowship” between a few of us chileheads…Some jughead didn’t get the meaning behind it, and proceded to tear it apart, along with Vic’s review. Funny how things turn out.
Same thing happened on the thread with the Mac and Cheese bottle that Blane, DK, and Cape Fear did “for the fun of it”! BTW, 2 of the prototypes SOLD FOR OVER $200.00 EACH!!!! A HUGE thanks to the person who started the carp slinging on that thread!

Man – tried to read it all…. there certianly is a lot. One good thing to come of this, IMHO : “I let the HSB Exec. Board vote on whether or not mods can delete/edit comments. The consensus agreed and until future notice, no one can delete comments”

There of course are going to be arguemnts, but at least there is one thing that wont happen anymore.

I hardly consider myself a reviewer. I simply send stuff that I like – which would mean all 10/10′s. And I highly doubt anyone wants to read more about me! Stayed tuned for my write-up on the Naga Sabi Bomb – coming REAL SOON…..

I feel the same way. I did some backpacking this weekend, came back looking forward to reading what I had missed here, and BOOM!

I just got my order of sweet sunshine in the mail today and it is a great sauce I have only tried the hot on my chicken salad sandwich for lunch and I have to agree with GILDO this sauce is the most unique sauce i’ve had in a while gonna try it on the grill tonight.

WOW – Gildo, We really appreciate the review and your opinion of our sauce! We think it is a special sauce too. I couldn’t have explained its hybrid qualities better.

I think our identity crisis is a good thing too. It makes for a versatile, unique product…

We have made a lot of changes along the way, seems to be an evolution.

Most notably, about a year ago we made steps to become the all natural sauce that we are today, the same sauce that we sampled at the fiery foods show this year.

In order to become All Natural we had to remove the trace amount of preservatives and all the Worcestershire sauce, because it is not all natural.

Beginning early last year and after six months of trying to massage the recipe, and bring the sauce to an all natural state – without comproming any aspects of it, we were successful. The taste, texture, aroma etc… matched with the added quality of being completely all natural.

The sauce we have been selling/retailing since mid ’06 is the all natural version (no Worcestershire sauce). The reviewed bottle is from the previous run – same taste, not all natural.

Our new bottles are pictured on the website http://www.sweetsunshine.com I’ll send HSB some updated samples for comparisson, that would be interesting. Jim, could you give me more info on the (R)? that you suggested.

Well, we are very happy to see people are enjoying our sauce. When Nick gave the Roasted Shallot & Garlic a 9.2 for our first review, we were ecstatic, a 10/10 is an absolute honor.

Glad to hear you dropped the Worscetshire from the ingredient label. Not listing the parenthetical ingredients has snagged a few folks- would have hated to see you get hit also!

The (R) is pretty simple really- Red Savina(R) is a Federally protected trademarked name. To be able to use it on the label you need to mark it (R) as such. You also should be sure to make sure that what you are purchasing is genuine RS chile also, from a licensed source.

The roasted shallot & Garlic was my favorite of them also
