The Sweet Sunshine Chili Sauce line (www.sweetsunshine.com) is no stranger to the hotsauceblog.com. Their Atomic chili sauce, and more recently their Roasted Shallots and Garlic chili sauce, have both been reviewed and were both given respectable marks. So is it really necessary to review yet another of their products? Why not.
I have to admit that I am not a real big fan of sweet hot sauces. I tend to favor those that are more vinegar based and feel that sweet sauces are more along the lines of BBQ sauces and should be considered such. So when I received a couple of their products for review, I have to admit I wasn’t very excited, that is until I opened the bottle and took a big whiff. Wow! A deliciously smoky aroma of habanero peppers, tomatoes and vinegar with just a hint of mustard and Worcestershire sauce.

I poured a bit into a ramekin and conducted the ultra-scientific finger taste test. Delicious. The sweetness of sugar and molasses is immediately followed up with the rich flavor of the red savina habaneros and tomatoes, a bit of onion, mustard and Worcestershire sauce, and then the habanero burn. This sauce is rated as hot and I whole heartedly agree with that assessment. Although it is not blow your head of hot, it does light you up a bit and give your face a bit of a glow. Awesome! Their motto is flavor before fire and they couldn’t be more dead on.
INGREDIENTS: Sugar, water, vinegar, mustard seed, tomato, ripe red savina habanero peppers, ancho peppers, corn syrup, cayenne peppers, habanero peppers, molasses, modified food starch, salt, Worcestershire sauce, natural flavors, citric acid, onion, spices, less than 1/10 of 1% sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate to preserve freshness.
Although the Sweet Sunshine sauces are classified as a chili sauce by their manufacturer, Gourmet Conveniences, they really aren’t a true chile sauce, or hot sauce, or even a barbeque sauce for that matter. It’s sort of the tasty bastard step child of all three. Nobody is really sure who the father is, and nobody cares. I ran into the owner of Gourmet Conveniences, Paul Sarris, at the 2007 Fiery Foods Show and had a nice talk with Paul and his sales guy Ed. I also tasted each of their products and found them all to be very good. Paul and Ed agreed that their sauces are very different in the fact that they are not 100% traditional and are some what of a unique hybrid. Well unique they are, and in this case, unique is a good thing.
Deciding what to try this sauce on, other than my finger, was a bit difficult because it would be good on most anything. I chose grilled chicken breasts and decided to use the Sweet Sunshine sauce towards the end of grilling, like a finishing sauce, mainly because of the amounts of sugar, molasses and corn syrup used in the recipe, and the chances of the sauce burning rather than caramelizing. Good choice. The heat and the sweet finished off the chicken perfectly with little spots of caramelized crispiness just along the edges. It was great.
The Sweet Sunshine Hot Chili sauce, like its sibling products, is definitely a standout in a retail setting. Its 5oz. multi-sided bottle is adorned with a bright, colorful, simple, and straight forward label, thus calling attention to the consumer and a potential purchase. I just hope they are also using rack cards to explain this stuff.
Bottom line, Sweet Sunshine Hot Chili Sauce is a winner. If your local retailer isn’t carrying it, demand that they do. In the meantime, order some from the Sweet Sunshine website, you’ll be glad you did.

Hey guys- you’ve got a couple of problems with your label that could land you in some serious trouble. My understanding of the allergen food regs that went into effect last year, you’re required to spell out what is in Worcesteshire sauce- some of them contain a listed allergen. There are NO exceptions to this rule and if the wrong folks see that label, you’re looking at a Class One recall. That’ll cost you thousands- ask CaJohn
And, while you’re reprinting them, you need the little (R) after Red Savina(R).
So many 10’s, it’s almost hard to believe.
Unless this is the best sauce you’ve EVER had - bar none - in ANY way, I wouldn’t have been so easy to throw out tens.

Loco Luna’s Lava Sauces have received many great reviews and several high 9+’s on the HSB, but never an overall perfect score. As a manufacturer, I’d love to see an overall 10.
As a consumer, I don’t personally believe that a perfect 10 is possible. That is just my opinion however. Everyone critics things slightly differently and we all have different likes and dislikes.
I think Gildo has every right to hit this with a 10 so long as he honestly thinks that it is justified (and there is no reason to think that he does not), and he is following the published HSB rating guidelines.
It would be nice to think that the ratings have a high degree of uniformity in criteria (thus Nick’s rating guidance), but like I said, we are all different in our preferences. We just have to get to know the raters over time to see what their particular bent is.
So for me, I have found no 10’s, but it is for others to determine if they have found any.

True that. We have Worcesteshire sauce in some of our stuff, and our ingredient list is thus huge. Check out the bottle.

Truth, I don’t know if it’s Anthony or not who deleted mine. I’m just trying to figure out why? this is what was deleted “ok, deal…..how much for all of them? how do i buy a regular set 2?” and i don’t see anything wrong with that personally.

Your post was up there for a least a little while- I do remember seeing it. I was also getting a couple of ‘comment not found errors’ about then. Could it just have been ‘one of those things’ with computers?

Crop was pretty poor actually. Cold & wet summer *really* reduced it. CaJohn’s sweating bullets (as usual) about whether or not we’ll have enough to get to this year.

just curious how you took them? did they offend you? or did you just take them, as his opinion to question? personally i don’t truly care what a reviewer rates the sauce at on the scale, because if something that interests me, i’m going to try it for myself. everyone’s taste can be so different. but it’s good to read the reviews, to learn about other sauces out there, ingredients, etc….then i can decide if i want to try them or not.

I found his comments to lack profesionalism, integrity and maturity. I appreciate constructive criticism and certainly don’t mind when people disagree with me — we all have our own opinions. I do however get peeved when people get flippant and ridicule others for no good reason.

HEY DK!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what’s up man? I’m just curious why everyone is so pi$$ed off about one persons comments, that not only is he banned, but just the mention of his name gets posts blocked. in my own opinion, take it for what it’s worth (not much, i’m just a dumb polack), but if someone is going to review items and publicly post them, then they need to be able to handle any and all feedback from that review. wether it be intelligent, mature, professional, stupid, absurd or what not. that just comes with the territory (and no this is pointed at no reviewer specifically at all, but i’m sure this will get me banned as someone will take it personally). as for missing posts, i can’t believe that what i posted had any grounds whatsoever for deletion (see above, it didn’t get deleted when repeated in a different thread) and that noone could come forward to tell me why or who deleted it. could have been an accident…hint…hint…someone use that as an excuse….lol

I’m just curious why everyone is so pi$$ed off about one persons comments, that not only is he banned, but just the mention of his name gets posts blocked. in my own opinion, take it for what it’s worth (not much, i’m just a dumb polack), but if someone is going to review items and publicly post them, then they need to be able to handle any and all feedback from that review. wether it be intelligent, mature, professional, stupid, absurd or what not. that just comes with the territory (and no this is pointed at no reviewer specifically at all, but i’m sure this will get me banned as someone will take it personally). as for missing posts, i can’t believe that what i posted had any grounds whatsoever for deletion (see above, it didn’t get deleted when repeated in a different thread) and that noone could come forward to tell me why or who deleted it. could have been an accident…hint…hint…someone use that as an excuse….lol
I hear ya Paul. I feel the same way. I’m all for keeping inappropriate behavior off of the site, but there needs to be some uniformity to it. Lots of content that’s questionable in taste gets put up for the world to see, but let someone state an opinion that someone disagrees with and everything goes to hell. Does’t make sense to me. To see that you and Brian had comments removed is just mind boggling. two of the nicest and well spoken guys on the blog. Weird.

I agree. Brant has been a valued member of the HSB community and we will be fortunate to keep it that way. Anyone who has meet him knows that he is a great guy. This all seems a little (a lot) extreme.
I seem to recall reading something like “judge not, lest ye be also judged”. In this context, if your going to review something, expect to get your review reviewed.
Well, I hate to jump in here, stir the pot and leave, but it’s late and I gotta get up early in the AM. Slept in today, have to make up for it tommorrow. I’ll be in here tommorrow for sure though. Still need to catch up completely on this stuff. Hard enough time trying to keep up in the forum now. Glad to see that part of the site being used now.

Well said Brian. That’s exactly the point I was trying to make on the M&C label. No person was targeted with it, just that the review itself is as subject to an opinion as the sauce in the review. I think it’s important to be able to comment on the review as a whole, the sauce, the review, and th reviewer. it’s all there to see, so it should all be subject to comment. My 2 cents.
Ok, now I’m outta here.
Gotta say one more thing though. Brian, Your sauces kick ass man! Gonna have to do a reorder soon. I’ve been eatin’ the Lava on EVERYTHING! Damned good stuff.

Holy crap, look what I started. Listen up, I want to put the kabash on this because it really has spun out of control. First of all, I stand behind my review and the 10/10. I know food and sauces and the Sweet Sunshine is deserving of the marks I gave it. Second. I really don’t care what Bla-ne or anyone else thinks of the review. I appreciate the feedback, good or bad, and expect both. What I don’t appreciate it when feedback is delivered in a harsh or disrespectful manner. We are all adults and professionals and I really expect more. I met most of you in NM and really had a great time hanging out and getting to know you. Let’s just keep some sort of civility to all of this. I think we owe ourselves that much.

I agree on the Profesionalism and Maturity, integrity I would have to throw that one out of the mix…… In the real world I hold all 3 of those vey highly, as you can ask anyone who as meant me…….. But I beleive in having fun, making people look at things from a different view and not conforming!!!!!
What went on here was not right in several area’s I agree with that, but my point to everything is: TBS asked your opinion of me and it was honest and to the point (Thank You) But when addressed with the same question of Anthony, we avoid the question and run like little scared mice…
So you see my issue…… Guest or member’s can slam on each other all day and a Reviewer can say or do what they please!!!! But if anyone goes against a review or reviewer we are made to be the Step-child of the group.,,,,
Some things I don’t see the light on, but on other issue’s I need to wear sunglasses because it is so bright.

Like I said before Nice review, I don’t believe in a 10/10 I live and work in a world that believes perfect is Utopia and can never be acheived, I respect that you believe so highly in the sauce…. And have came to the conclusion that your 10/10 is probably my 8.5 or 9/10 which I have no problem with…..

I couldnt agree more with this comment.
I watched some of this unfold yesterday and kept my mouth shut. All of this “talk” (Im being nice here) of being censored, and everyone jumping the gun and making accusations isnt cool! Then run off to the forum and write a post bashing the exact site that brought so many good times, laughs, ideas, and friends together. Talk about stabbing each other in the back? That sure didn’t take long, did it? That says alot right there.
Yeah, people have a right to their opinions, and by the way, Nick does an EXCELLENT job of letting you all voice them on here. To say most of the comments in the later part of this post are / were inappropriate is an understatement. Sure, I bet there is more to this story as some things had been deleted, and is part of the reason for all the negativity. I think when this type of issue arises, there needs a bit more integrity and control in all of us, and as Nick said “behaving like 2yr olds the last two days” isn’t the way to handle it. Looking back at what I saw, there was a lot of behavior I wouldn’t be to proud of. Its sad.
The HSB has come a long way, and is many things to many people. What I think we saw or read yesterday is a direction no one that comments (or reads) on here should be proud of. There is no finger pointing going on. Just sit back and take a long look at what it’s becoming on here. Those of us that have been here a long time know exactly what I mean.
Yes there is room for disagreements, and even questioning others opinions, but not in a way that has ended it all up like this.
Keep the HSB at the top and lets NOT show the world we don’t care how we are viewed.

Well Said!!! I think all this BS can end if ANTHONY would keep his fingers off the delete buttons.I also agree that if there was not drama like this most of these reviews would be looked at once or twice.Cant we all just get along?..I hope not!!! cause this would be one boring place to visit

Always the peace maker….. Leaving in a controlled enviroment isn’t that much fun to me……. And once again point the finger at the commenter and stay far away from any finger pointing at a reviewer, Chris K maybe take a step back and look threw our eye’s and not the HSB and maybe just maybe you can see our frustration.
