Spice for Soldiers -

What it is: The brain child of all the great chileheads here on the HSB, the Spice for Soldiers project is going to change the way soldiers eat.

Here’s the idea:
A website will be developed on the Spiceforsoldiers.com domain. The website will feature a section on the manufacturers (sponsors) and a section of pictures from the soldiers enjoying the sauces and spices sent over. Soldiers and family members will be able to place request through the site. Donations can be made by anyone and everyone and will go to helping the manufacturers pay for the cost of shipping and/or the buying of any other supplies the soldiers need.

How the backend will work:
Once a request comes in, it will be sent out to the participating manufacturers. A manufacturer will then choose to fulfill that request (only 1 at a time) and will send out 6 bottles of sauce (standardized costs). The shipping invoice can be generated using one common account and then paid for by the funds in the PayPal donation account (donations ‘@’ spiceforsoldiers.com). This way, the site serves as more of a connection hub and allows as many manufacturers to participate as there are soldiers the use the service.

Next Steps:

  • Website Setup (email addresses and Paypal account are done), website should take no more then 2-3 weeks. Working on another surprise project at the moment. ;-)
  • Logo: Anthony has volunteered his wife to design the logo (she’s a pro designer), but I don’t know what we want design wise. Suggestions? I’m thinking a logo for the site and then a logo/button for the participating manufacturers to put on their websites as well.
  • Manufacturers: I’ll need to collect a list of the participating manufacturers, a short blurb on your company and your logo. Once the initial list of participants is received, we may want to extend the reach and invite others to join in. (send that info to requests ‘@’ spiceforsoldiers.com)
  • Let the soldiers know: Once the site is set up, we should pass the word around to the soldiers. Then the fun begins!

That sounds like a good idea. I know how they feel, those MRE’s are bland and nasty.

This is a great cause that deserves our full attention. These soldiers sacrafice for us - let’s return the favor even if only in a small way.

Would this service only be for soldiers in the Middle-East or anywhere in the world? My brother is stationed at Guantanamo Bay and he can’t find any decent sauce anywhere!

We ship out to APO’s in Korea and Germany all the time, seems there is quite a want/need to fill. I’d be glad to donate whatever is necessary.

I am in contact with a friend who does web design for ESPN/Disney to see if he can donate this time to the new site/portal. No promises as those two accounts eat up most of his time. His name is Mike Baker and owns http://www.bakermedia.com/services/

here is some examples from his resume:

http://www.ilpalazzone.com/
http://www.espnsportsfigures.com/sportsfigures/

I hope he has time to donate. He’s a very cool individudal and does some great work. Cross your fingers!!

We would be honored to be involved. These Men and Women put their lives on the line daily for us folks at home, what a wonderful way of letting them know they are appreciated.

Longbranch definitely would like to be involved

Mild to Wild® is in, of course. I might beg leave to change the terms just a wee bit to fit the packaging I already have.

Hey Brian - Just sent you an email - Thanks again, he will be totally pumped when he gets some sauce! And I’m sure anyone that eats with him will be happy too! It will blow away all the mixed nuts and melted candy he’s been getting so far. Oh yeah, and the dominoes, my mom sent him dominoes! Why??

Adam2- she sent him dominoes because that is *the* game among many of the cultures in those parts. I’ve a couple of firefighters from Puerto Rico on my department and they nearly come to blows over the silly game :-) Down in Miami, you can go past Bolivar? Park near little Havana & see crowds of folks gathered around playing ‘bones’. Maybe she thinks he needs to fit in more :-)

Alittle behind the curve, but Scotty B’s Hot Sauces would love to spread the heat around to our men and women in uniform. I’ve already been requested through my web-site for some hot sauces to aid a 17 man marine unit in remote location in Iraq with no offical mess to eat at. Requested their sizes so I could send them some Scotty B’s T-Shirts also. Semper Fi

I’d like to believe that Jim, but you’ve certainly never met my mother! :)
They were probably just on sale at Wal-mart or something.
