Step Up For Charity: Pepper Pictures

Probably the most popular items in the Open Fields Chilehead Raffle were these fantastic pepper x-rays and pictures done by Jeff Schickowski (the man behind the StepUpforCharity.org and WildPepper.com websites). With over 500+ raffle tickets and only 6 pepper pictures (plus other prizes) available, I knew the chances would be slim to none that a picture would be left on the table if one of my tickets was chosen (thanks for the John Deere cap CaJohn) so I spoke with Jeff and together we devised yet another way to help the man of steel out.

For a donation to Step Up for Charity of $5 per picture, the high-res versions of these pepper pictures will be emailed to you so that you can print out the image and make your own framed pepper picture. Imagine these beauties framed with a nice white or black matte around then and then on your wall.

These fantastic pepper x-rays and more pepper pictures are available for a $5 donation (per pepper picture) to Step Up here.

Thanks for your interest in helping one of my favorite people, Jim Campbell, to help others by way of his Step Up For Charity fund raising efforts.

At this year’s Open Fields event, hosted by Saint Jim, a raffle was held to help raise money. Among the prizes were these prints of X-rays of actual peppers and they were gone pretty quick! The interest shown has prodded me to offer the files for sale, with all proceeds to go directly to the Step Up efforts.

Each print can be purchased for a $5.00 donation through PayPal. Once your donation is received, I will email the file to you and you can print it yourself, either at home or through your local WalMart or other photo processor. The only stipulations I have for their use is that you print them for yourself, use them for your computer desktop, or generally enjoy them. You are not given permission to produce them for sale to others or for commercial use of any kind. Additional licensed use can be negotiated if desired.

If you’d like to make a donation without purchasing a print you can do that here.

Thanks again for your interest,

Jeff Schickowski

very very cool

may i ask the size of the pics (meg?)

what do you think the largest size you can print them is? will you provide names of what type of pepper each pic is?

The images are approximately 25 megabyte .BMP formatted images (smaller when zipped for emailing).

The actual pepper images are approximately 5×7 inches with a white border that brings it up to 8×10 inches at 300 DPI (or larger at lower resolution). They look great in an 11×14 frame and black mat board.

If you have a preference for another format that can certainly be arranged.

If you’re interested I’ll certainly let you know what kind of peppers they are.

Jeff,
Can we get them in a RAW, TIFF or JPG format as well??
I’m thinking I’ll take one of each if you can give me one of those formats
Let me know.
Thanks!

TIFF and JPG are no problem… I can get them in DICOM format for anyone wanting to display the original x-ray format on a medical archive system ;) drop me a note if you’d like any different formats. It’ll have to wait til I get home tonight though.

I’m sure I’m going to embarrass myself by trying to identify a 1 dimensional black and white X ray of chile peppers (of which there are hundreds), but what the hell, I’m game if you are. Here’s my guess:

Pic 1 and 2
Ancho and a New Mex (pic 2 is inverse exposure)
Pic 3
Habanero
Pic 4
Red Savina Habanero
Pic 5
Datil
Pic 6
Jalapeno

I’m sure I’m completely wrong, but the more I stare at those pics, the more confused I’m becoming.
If Jim or Jeff would clarify what I’m looking at, that would be great.
Regardless, this is one hell of a great idea. I’ll be in touch for sure.

Pic 1: Correct
Pic 2: Correct
Pic 3, 4, and 5: All orange habs and #5 is “Pregnant” (small pod within normal pod)
Pic 6: Yellow “Wax Pepper” as labeled at the grocery store

Pretty darn good for a non-radiologist! Of course it would have helped if they were all shown to scale.

I think one of the most interesting aspects of these pics is how you can see the seed distribution… from a cluster at the stem end to those with seeds scattered throughout.

1 and 2 - dont have a clue (maybe a skinny bell pepper and serrano)

5 chinese
6 bhut jolokia

So other than missing the nit picky details on the Habs (that pregnant pod threw me off) and being wrong on the Jalapeno, UB did pretty good hey general?
I was more right than you, so I’m good with that.

These are completely whole. I didn’t know what the results were going to look like until the image was done.

I tried to lay them out so that the resulting image would be as artistic as possible… making sure the stems were in profile, pod shape was recognizable, etc… but what was going on inside the pod was a complete mystery. I just got lucky in getting the “pregnant” hab shot.

Lee, have you ever had an Xray? Did they cut you open to take it? ;)
All I know about X rays is, the room is usually freezing and make sure you cover your ‘nads if you ever want to have kids, or wear lead underwear.

These pics rock, this is one hell of an idea. I like the whole X ray thing, like that Ministry album cover for The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste, too cool.

That is a fantastic idea. It could have a regular picture, and x-ray so you can see the insides, a picture of the plant. Then you could do the scientific name, common names and uses, scoville rating, and a sauce recipe! Jim, you should do it for Step up!

Chiles… The Inside Story!

I don’t have access to much but with the help of a few well places chilehead amigos from here and other lists we could probably come up with quite an assortment.

How about a color photo overlay, and when you flip it back there’s an x-ray of the same pepper underneath? Sounds expensive but fun.

Y’all can’t truly appreciate how talented this Jeff guy is :-) He’s also even more modest than me! He does the Open Fields posters as well (all except one) and refuses to take anything for all the work he’s done on the StepUp site.

The pics really don’t do credit to the things either. When they were laid out on the table at Open Fields, jaws dropped & everyone went ‘whooooh’. They were the first six items chosen IIRC, even ahead of some nice pottery and plates!

I can’t possibly thank he (or Nick!) enough for all they’ve done.

Loading up the truck & headed down to Gatlinburg to party for the weekend with CaJohn & crew before the CHRISTmas season rush hits.

Mr. Nick Lindauer:

I also have an idea for a show for the Food Network, specifically for the overworked Bobby “BBQ” Flay. I’ll settle for any other chef for this idea, though. I contacted the Food Network website, and learned that they only take ideas from Production Studios. I have a cousin in LA who is a Producer himself. Maybe we could pitch the ideas to him! Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Mike Carrieri

Oh! By the way, my favorite hot sauce is Pepper Plant Sauce from here in California. My other favorites: Sriracha (the rooster), 100% Pain (a punch in the gut!), Tapatio, and Tabasco.

The guessing took place about 40 comments ago but if you promise not to cheat you can guess again…

Love the pics. Gonna pay for my laptop background real soon. (I’m poor.) ((. . . Saw the original x-ray pics up close and in person at the raffle.)) (((They were gone by the time my number was called but I still made out.)))

Now put away the Ministry and put on some Pantera, would ya? <—that little smiley thing here.
