Zest Fest 2006

September 8th, 9th & 10th seem so far away, but it’s about time to start thinking about travel plans. (or even deciding if you’re going).

I booked a flight this weekend, so that’s taken care of and I’ll be sharing a room with a fellow HSBer at the AmeriSuites Stockyards (smack dab in the middle of the action). If you want to save some money, it’s a good idea to split a room - plus it’s like Vegas, your room is just a place to sleep and change clothes.

Beyond travel plans, there are shirt plans in the works plus additional HSBer events that I’m trying to get kick started, so stay tuned for more info on that.

So who is planning on going this year?

I live in Austin which is 3 hours away, plus my family is in Dallas. So I will definitely be there. I look forward to meeting everyone. Let me know if you need info on stuff to do, places to go in DFW.

I’m definitely at this one. The wife is supposedly coming as well (I need a designated driver - or else I will have to behave)

I would love to say I’m in - but first I’d have to convince some very important people to change my wedding date! Looks like we might have to run away to Vegas. At least it would save the folks some money :)

I really would like to go cause it sounds like a blast. Anyone want to split a room? ha Would I need to get there the night before the 8th? Just seeing if I need to take a vacation or not :D

Hey Nick….. Just round numbers, but what did airfare from NY cost? What about the room?

Aaron - The 8ths is Trade Day, so you wouldn’t need to arrive until that night.

I found a non-stop flight out of LGA for $250 (with all the taxes and such). I think the room is going to run $250 for 4 nights (since I’m spliting it).

Thanx Nick…. I’ll need to double or triple the numbers - as I need to bribe the wife! I guess I should start working on her now :)

Jaime-can’t wait to try it. Miami to Ft. Worth is a VERY long drive. 1400 miles/ 20 hours in the car. I suggest flying.
It is the 2006 show, but the awards are for 2007.

Thanks-

No one has their “game face” on at that time but we do manage to stay pretty close to wherever we’re calling home. That is why we are staying in the Stockyards, that’s where the party is! Fresh Red Savina’s would go sweet in my Mango Habanero Sauce. I’m using Jim’s mash for some of it now.

CaJohns mash (sort of) Jim’s chiles. We don’t ferment the ground chiles, they are blended with vinegar and NO salt is added. It really makes a difference. Jim taught me how to make it and now supervises by phone.

I’d defo be in on it but that might be hard organizing 7 or 8 people from all over the shop. I’m up for ideas though. You know if there’s enough of us the hotel might shuttle us around.

Yeah I was just throwing ideas around myself. It would cool to go around as a group. I agree on the shuttle thing as well. If nothing else they can shuttle us to the Memorial Center.
But I would like to rent something to get a little more freedom from cab rides and stuff but it all depends on costs cause its not but 4 miles to the center so a cab ride cant be too bad

haha Yeah I have looked around a good bit. I could get it cheaper out of Birmingham but its only like 18 bucks cheaper and it will be at least 30 more minutes travel time as Huntsville is only 30 minutes from my place. I could add some stops in there but it makes my trip 9 hours versus 2 and only saves about 50 bucks. So I think my best option is the 336 nonstop from Huntsville. I am not complaining cause I have paid much more for a ticket before :D

Eman, Trust me! Do yourself a favor and get a seperate seat for baby. When we went to NM my wife was saying “JR can sit on my lap”. And everyone was telling me how I was waisting money getting JR his own seat. Well it was the best money I’ve spent in a long time! You will need the extra room and the baby will sleep a hell of alot better in the car seat. Plus you guys will be more confortable as well.

From the look of things, 5+ months ahead of the show, the show is certainly going to be a “special” event. CaJohns will be doing “special” things by way of new releases, show central items and blogger editions. Jim C has a few things cooking for it, Dude will certainly have a few things up his sleve, THT has already stated they will have some thing special, Creator can be counted on as well, and who else will be joining the blog and offering special show things. Im sure our Host will gatner up a few of these to help you non-attendees attend vicariously through the Blogmaster. I’m sure with all the techies tehre will be some updates posted.

I just have to say I hope we can all survive the next 5 months as it looks like there is the possibility that this show will be like NO other fiery foods show in the history of “The Movement”. Anxiety will build as the anticipation of what’s to come whirls through the heads of blog members and some of them may succumb to wailing and gnashing their teeth. It may not be that far away, but this anticipation will drive us all close to the edge. I can only imagine the elation of the faithful when it’s “SHOWTIME”!!!

Don’t use 4″ in these parts- got 5″ and 3″. I’ll bring the 5″. It’s also not cotton so a Sharpie will work extremely well in signing names on it. Only problem is, it comes in 100′ rolls that weigh about 100 lbs! I’ll see if the shop can cut some down for me. They’ll likely salvage the couplings though.

Well folks, count me out for this excursion. I hate to say it, but oh well. There was no way we were going to get a booth, as our calendar wouldn’t allow it, but it seems this festivity falls on the same date we promised the Fireman we’d show up to their chili and BBQ show. Considering the Fire Dept. show is for a very good cause, there is no way in Hell I’m gonna call ‘em and tell ‘em I’m not coming. No biggie, perhaps next year.

Aaron, either you are overestimating yourself, or underestimating me :) . I would love to go, but I am putting the Firemen first on this one. I promised them last year we would be returning, and they have confirmed with me, more than once that we are returning. We were a great draw for them at their 1st annual Chili & BBQ cookoff last year and we donated a good chunk of what we made that day to them. I love those guys, they are a riot! I do see your humor, but so be it, once I commit to something, it flat out doesn’t change, must be the military upbringing. There will be more shows to go to, and I will be attending them, but for the Fire Guys, hey, it’s all about them that weekend.

Huv, it’s in Hillsborough, NJ. They got some great food. The Fire Dept. buys a dumptruck load of various meats (ribs, brisket, chicken, etc) and they hand it out to the BBQ guys (you should see some of these smokers, CRIPES!), the BBQ guys aren’t in it for the money, they just want the trophy. After they cook the meats, they give it back to the Fire Dept. to sell for charity. It’s a great show for a great cause.

1217 was open when I looked at the list- that was one of my listed choices. I got my first choice- a corner. 1008 I believe. I’m hard to miss with a 6′ firetruck in the booth :-)

I don’t know about the flight over Matt, but there will be at least a few folks from the UK coming over for the Open Fields, two weeks after Ft Worth (week after Houston). You might be able to meet up with them. In the space of a little over two weeks, you could do Zest Fest, Houston Hot Sauce, and Open Fields. That ought to about chillie you out :-)

It brings me to the beginning of this thread - YES. Nick changed back the sorting of the thread so it’s oldest first. For some reason now it brings you to page 1, not to the page with the comment. Not sure if this is something Nick can fix - I know he is having issues with the “preview” now that the threads are paged.

Set your standards highere dude :-P

Trade day is set aside for the market buyers- versus the individual retail folks. It’s the day when we’re supposed to sell our stuff to all the big corporate buyers who will be there…. yeah right! Fiery Food Show in Abq has the same thing- pretty common to set a day aside for those folks so they don’t have to ‘battle’ for frontage space with teh thousands of folsk their just to eat and sample.

Over 70 on tap and over 100 more in bottle Come to find out they have one in Ft Worth about 3 to 4 miles from the convention center! I make a motion to visit one night! That way they have something we all like to drink :D Me I recommend the Left Hand Milk Stout as weird as it sounds

Oh- they’ve got Port (NOT Porter) there?! Maybe a good Cabernet?? Otherwise you’ll have to edit that “we all” part :-)

Ha! True A good port never hurts though! They do have some very fine trappist ales that are aged much like some wines. I think they serve sweet tea though :)

If I get this stair climb thing done succesfully, I might out-party all y’all down there :-)

Gotta disagree with you there Aaron- I’ve had more than one good port hurt… usually the day after though ;-)

Ha!!!! I totally agree. I was at a nice place in Atlanta with a guy most anyone would consider a wine expert. He lives in California near Sonoma Valley around many wineries. I let him do all the picking and the port he picked knocked my socks off cause I know little about wine. I think it was a Graham’s Vintage Port, don’t know the year though. Very great

I was hoping someone may be able to give me more information about Zest Fest 2006. I know it is this coming weekend, but I am not having any luck finding where it is, how much to get in, and all the other information. If any of you could fill me in on the details or provide me the web page address I would be greatly appreciative. Thanks!

Jim, got the autograph bottles today, thank you so much… Check sent, with a extra check for your charity.

Thanks

I just manually approved you - you should be good if you want. Log in on the left, click on the store (the sauce image), and you will have to fill out some more info (address for your account, etc). Later works as well….
