I’ve been documenting my search for authentic mexican food in NYC here on the HSB for quite a long time now, mostly in regards to finding a good burrito. And by good burrito I mean a great burrito. Something close to the burritos I used to make my brother bring me in Oregon (from California). So I’ve been searching in NYC for a good burrito but the other day I found a light at the end of the tunnel. Good tacos.
Tehuitzingo – The wife and I found it in the Chowhound’s Guide to NYC (recommended here) – so far we’ve gone to three places described in the book and found happiness at each place. Where else can you get a recommendation for a good Fluffer Nutter Shake? (yep, seriously)
Anyways, back to the tacos. The ordering counter is in the very back of a tiny deli, not a place you would normally stumble across. Two ladies are squeezed into a cooking area the size of an office cubicle, but they are happy and quite chatty (even with my broken Spanish). The tacos are only $2 each (get 3 if your hungry) – can’t beat that anywhere in Midtown. You can eat at the tiny counter as well, but if you hang out you may end up ordering more then your stomach can handle, so I recommend getting your tacos to go.
The carnitas [tag]tacos[/tag] were the best out of the three we tried (chicken, beef and carnitas). The pork was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside with a bit of spice (no heat). Perfectly done. The beef was rather crispy, almost jerky like but still very tasty as well. The wife loved the chicken so much that I didn’t get a chance to sample, but she assures me it was terrific.
