Retro Review #5 – Alberta Crude and Acid Rain

These two stalwarts are the backbone of the Canadian Hot Sauce scene. Sam (Shivji of Hatari Brothers fame) has concocted two legendary [tag]hot sauces[/tag] (and I haven’t even begun to start talking about Grandma Shivji’s sauces). He has been the recipient of numerous awards over the years and if you ever needed to be reminded of how a great hot sauce should taste look no further.

Alberta Crude Hot Sauce

Ingredients: Tomato Paste, Red Habanero Peppers, Jalapeno Peppers, Peri-Peri Peppers, Chipotle Peppers, Vinegar, Brown Sugar, Salt, Spices, Shallots, Garlic, Black Pepper, Oleoresin Capsicum

Straight off the bat everything about this [tag]hot sauce[/tag] speaks perfection. Like all the other greats out there, this has every quality you are looking for and then some. From the texture, consistency and heat.

The field test for this was a pepperoni and bacon Pizza Pocket. I like to mix tomato based sauces with “Italian” type food. If you haven’t had a pizza pocket before let me tell you they can be addictive. Adding the sauce to this one made it even more so. The sauce completely complimented the pizza pocket and a slight tinge of sweetness was noticeable followed up by a soothing burn. Nothing over whelming but definitely noticeable. I actually had to dollop another couple of doses of this sauce on as it was so good.

As I mentioned the sauce has been around for years. It’s legacy lives and if you haven’t given it a try…..well let’s just say you have lost some chilihead points.

Acid Rain Hot Sauce

Ingredients: Habanero, Piquin, Ring of Fire, Peri-Peri, Tepin and Jalapeno Peppers, Garlic, Ginger, Spices, Salt, Lemon, Lime and Orange Juice, Vinegar

If you have been reading my reviews, particularly of Canadian products….perhaps you have noticed a common trend. We tend to have vinegar low on the ingredients list. I have a theories to why this is, I won’t extrapolate, but let’s just say it is a good thing.
This was a great field test. Pork Chops with Jack Daniel Steak and Burger Seasoning, pepper fries and cool cucumbers. The 2oz bottle I had barely made it through the meal. In the picture you will see I didn’t use ketchup. I ended up using the Acid Rain.

The flavour never overpowered the pork chops or the fries. It gave an individuality to both. I had one left over pork chop that I had eat even though I was full because I wanted to try the sauce again. It says on the bottle that “this is for those who like it hot”. There was some heat. But for me it was not too significant. Like I said I was able to almost finish off the bottle in one meal without so much as breaking a sweat.

This is as close as you get to perfection.
