I had the pleasure of reviewing another fine product from Nando’s this week, this go-around we tried their Wild Herb Peri-Peri Sauce. Part of my new ritual in preparation of trying a new sauce to review; I read the entire label, spin the bottle around to get a good look inside, shake it up a bit to ensure everything blends well, and then crack her open. To me this gives an accurate blend of the sauces fragrance, upon breaking the seal the first whiff was pleasantly citrus’ey. It is Lemon actually and followed quickly by Vinegar and Parsley. This sauce has a definite unique aroma and I personally think it melds with the season as a flavorfull summer type sauce.
Ingredients: Water, White Vinegar, Onions, Salt, Lemons, Sunflower Oil(3%), Serrano Chillies, Garlic, Cayenne Pepper, African Birds Eye Chili(Peri-Peri), Stabilisers(E415,E405), Parsley.
“A delicious blend of sun-ripened lemons, garlic, spices, Africian Birds Eye Chilies and parsley.”
“Peri-Peri is the heart and soul of Nando’s and the secret ingredient behind the Nando’s resaurants worldwide. Add passion to all your meals with this addictive blend of flavours. Nando’s Peri-Peri is delicious with stir-fries, casseroles, dips, sandwiches or anything you can get your hands on!”
I used the Nando’s Wild Herb Peri-Peri Sauce as a marinade and put two small boneless chicken breasts in it over just over 24 hours. I can tell you my mouth was watering when pouring this fairly chunky, thick sauce because it just smells wonderful. And honestly the taste is just as good as the smell. I do not use salt on my food and only use it on occasion when a recipe calls for it, so I picked up on it quickly. The sauce has garlic pieces and visible spices all through it. The lemon flavor is pronounced and there is a decent tongue tingle of heat from the spices and the peppers. Nando’s has it labeled as a Medium heat level and it stands firmly to that description, the warmth stays nicely on your tongue and lips for awhile- making sure you remember it was there.
The chicken breasts baked up nicely and were very tender, the flavor penetrated deep and the lemoney strong points complimented the chicken well. I added sides of brown rice and some lima beans in a butter/garlic sauce, good stuff.
Conculsion: Nando’s produced a very tastey, fragerant sauce that fits well with all your summer themed meals. A lot of my favorite flavors are blended very happily together in this sauce- it’s one big (edible) happy family! Read your label carefully, Salt is listed towards the top if you watch your intake, but I highly recommend this “FOR WILD LOVERS” very good sauce.
