How Reviews Work on Hot Sauce Blog
Hot Sauce Blog has been publishing honest reviews since 2004. This page explains exactly how that process works — no fine print, no spin.
The Core Policy: No Pay-for-Play. Ever.
I have never accepted money in exchange for a review. Not in 2004, not now, not ever. This is the single most important policy on this site, and it’s non-negotiable.
If a sauce is outstanding, I’ll say so. If it misses the mark, I’ll say that too. Makers who send products for review understand this upfront. If you’re looking for a guaranteed positive write-up, this isn’t the place.
Where the Products Come From
Products reviewed on Hot Sauce Blog come from two sources:
- Purchased by me — I buy a lot of hot sauce. Always have. If something catches my eye at a shop, expo, or online store, I’ll pick it up and review it.
- Sent by makers — Sauce makers, BBQ sauce companies, salsa brands, and spice companies sometimes send products for review consideration. Receiving a free product does not guarantee a review, and it absolutely does not guarantee a positive one.
Every review discloses whether the product was purchased or provided. Transparency matters.
What I Review
Hot Sauce Blog covers more than just hot sauce. Reviews span several categories:
- Hot Sauces — From mild everyday sauces to superhot extract bombs
- BBQ Sauces — Smoky, sweet, spicy, and everything in between
- Salsas — Fresh, jarred, fermented, and fire-roasted
- Dry Rubs & Spices — Blends, single-origin powders, and seasoning mixes
- Spicy Foods — Chips, snacks, jerky, candy, and anything that brings the heat
- Restaurants — Spots that take spicy food seriously
How I Evaluate Products
Every review considers these factors:
- Flavor — Does it taste good? Is there complexity beyond just heat?
- Heat Level — How hot is it, and does the heat complement or overpower the flavor?
- Ingredients — What’s in it? Quality and simplicity count.
- Versatility — How many ways can you use it?
- Value — Is the price fair for what you get?
- Packaging & Presentation — First impressions matter on the shelf.
I don’t use a numerical scoring system. After tasting thousands of sauces, I’ve found that honest, detailed descriptions serve readers better than arbitrary numbers.
Affiliate Links & Advertising
Hot Sauce Blog participates in affiliate programs, including Amazon Associates. This means if you click a product link and make a purchase, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. These commissions help keep the site running.
Affiliate relationships never influence review content. A product’s review is written before any affiliate link is added. The editorial and the monetization are completely separate.
The site also displays advertising. Advertisers have zero input on editorial content.
Want to Send a Product for Review?
If you’re a sauce maker and want to submit a product for review consideration, reach out through the contact page. A few things to know:
- Sending a product does not guarantee a review will be published
- All reviews are honest — positive or negative
- I typically review products within 4-6 weeks of receiving them
- I cannot return products after review
This policy has been in place since the very first review on Hot Sauce Blog, and it’s the reason readers trust what they read here. That trust is worth more than any sponsorship check.
