Got back from Open Fields 2007 a few hours ago – the trip went smoothly and the event was great. I came home smelling like a trash can and looking like a yeti (having not shaved for 3 days) but it was all totally worth it. I spent most of Saturday judging all of the sauces for the Hot Sauce Contest – over 120 entries! And as the only judge that stuck in it from start to finish – I can honestly say that I tasted some of the best and some of the worst that chileheads have to offer. I’ll post the contest winners up once they are sent over, along with some great pics of the tasting.

The branding Iron is WAY COOL!!! Where do I get one of those fire dept. shirts Jim is wearing?
Hey Nick, did you get that brand on your azz??
That would be so hard core Chilehead man.
That gives me an idea…hmm……
looks like a bunch of fun. wish i could have been there.
old flag of mississippi looks nice flying in the wind.
Nice meeting you Nick!
Good time, so much so that Mandy and I had to come back for more. Thanks a bunch to Jim in particular and all the others who made the event as awesome as it was! John, the Deadliest Batch rocks!
Thanks to Nick for getting roped into being a judge last minute! Tied up the better part of his afternoon on Saturday as there were over 100 entries to be judged! The contest raised just over $1,400 for StepUp 🙂 Gotta agree with him- there were some great sauces as well as some *real* strange ones! The contest will now be an annual part of the Open Fields.

Picked mine up in ABQ at the FFS a few years back. Haven’t seen any again but they shouldn’t be too hard to find. Kinda covers all the bases, huh? 🙂
Red Hot T’s in ABQ has them, it was only last year (2006) that they came out with the shirt. Climbing all those stairs has taken its toll on Jim’s memory. He’s doing it again in a few days, lets show him some true blog support!!! All the best Jim!!!
Go get em Jim!!!!! I don’t even like climbing the stairs necessary to get in my house!
My big thanks to Nick too! I had volunteered to be a judge a couple months ago even though am only a lowly buck private in the SandyO Moderate Corps. (getting better though) Anyways, my Dr advised not taking a chance of botulism etc because am on powderfull immuno-surpressents at the moment and even a mild case of food poisoning could do me in.
I wish could have spent a little time chatting with Nick. Next year I plan to skip the on site contest so can visit more.
How anyone could sample so many entries and still walk away is beyond me.
As Gordon would say… Nick, you ROCK!
I am DYING to get the results!! Am I just on the wrong page? I read a rumor about some professional results on another hot blog, but nothing else.
I was in the Ametuer Sweet Hot and Other (Hot BBQ) categories.
