Ok, so after a way long time of trying to make um perfect ( 71 rounds of samples, which is a record for me), I am proud to say “they’re here” Yes, my hand-made kettle cooked Chips Dusted with a Perfect Blend of Chipotle and Habanero Spice. They F-in Rock! The Heat Level is what I would call “Medium”. Not nearly as hot as our black bag but they are not mild. So I will say, Medium, I hate that word, to be honest is sounds so f-in boring. Also, I want to give you heads up on some other things. We are almost ready to kick off Ozzy’s Axeman and Black Label Society founder Zakk Wylde’s Berserker Sauce Line, as I have really gotten to know the World of Zakk in the last 6 months, I have to tell you he is one real chilihead and needless to say a guitar legend that Speaks for Himself. We are planning on debuting the sauce line at OzzFest in July 2008. After speaking with Zakk last week he told me he is having a Limited Number of his Custom Signed Les Paul Guitars made for me to give out to a special few chilihead locations around the globe this fall (Over $6,000 Value Each). Ok I have so much to tell you about but I need to stop. I need to talk instead of type. Anyway, will speak to ya soon, with so much more to tell ya.

It would be right up there with Dave’s Insanity Reserve in the wooden “coffin” crate. I’ve always thought that was a really cool package for a sauce.
My favorite though is the bottle of Haunted Hot Sauce that came in a wooden coffin with a latch and hinges. Moss and little rubber maggots packeged inside of it with the bottle. LOL!!

We are all just concerned about the state of the HSB and would of course like to see it back up and running as it once was. Whatever is going on with Nick is his business and nobody here should feel as if they are owed an explanation or anything. I think it would be fair to say that we are all just curious to know if the HSB is going away or if there is some plan to bring it back anytime soon. Yah, the sauces are still on schedule, sort of. Things are just taking a bit longer than I would like, but we’re still moving forward. I’m currently waiting for my co-packer to send me their bench samples of my products so I can make sure they are correct. Hopefully there won’t be much if any tweaking that needs to be done. I have positive thoughts. Our new co-packer has been really easy to work with and things have been going well this time around. Looking at a late summer/early fall launch.

Oh yah I did. When this whole venture began, that was my original intent. Unfortunately I live in Mayberry and there are no commercial kitchens to rent time in. Plus I just don’t have that much time to spend in the kitchen. My regular full-time job gets in the way. I’ll take a smaller margin on the product, but I’ll have more time to sell and market, so volume should make up the difference. One day I hope to have our own production facility, but that’s a ways off.

I recently read an article about Chuck Evans of Montezuma Brand and his rediculous trademark on the term “Smokey Chipotle” and his lawsuits against any and all violators of its use. On his site he lists all of the companies he’s sent cease and desist orders to. Listed are ScottyB and THT, BUT he also says that they are both out of business. Isn’t it illegal to falsely state on a public forum that a business is out of business when it isn’t? Couldn’t that be harmful to their business? Chuck Evans is a true piece of work and is in no way a part of the fraternity of sauce makers and chilie heads that we all belong to. Am I the only one who is mad about this guy?

Chuck Evans has been a thorn in many manufacturers sides, this is true. THT was in fact sent a cease and desist letter AFTER a verbal agreement was made at our first show in NM. Even after we changed our lables AS PROMISED he still posted our name up on his website as
“VIOLATORS”!!!!! Now anyone who knows THT and the history of our BBQ Sauce names, knows, we did in fact comply with Mr.Montezuma’s demands and yet we were still harassed. If you ask me, he has proven that selling sauce is clearly not the priority but being a bully is.
So why doesn’t anyone do anything about Chuck? Here on the California central coast we had a problem with a lawsuit happy opportunist who was in a wheelchair from a motorcycle accident that he caused. He would go around to the local resorts, restaurants, wineries and hotels and if he decided they were not ADA compliant, he files a lawsuit against them for damages and retrofits. He put more than a few businesses out of business and it seemed that everyone was in fear of him, until finally a few businesses joined together and fought back. He quickly went away, most all of his pending suits were dismissed and he is no longer a threat. So what’s stopping the hot sauce industry from doing the same?

I think it’s silly too – but maybe he really was the first guy to use ‘smokey chipotle’. Everyone knew they were smoked jalapeno peppers, but nobody called them smokey chiptole until Chuck. Hey I’m all for the guy defending his rights. What we (THT) had a problem with was the fact that he put us up on his list of “Violators” AFTER we had changed the name of our sauce. If you look even till this day we are still listed on his website………at this point its slander and he probably could be held responsible in the courts ….for what exactly I am not sure. There have been no new reviews from anyone for quite some time, so why do feel it necessary to pick on me? All of the sauces I’ve ever received from Nick are right inside my pantry waiting to be opened and reviewed. I’m extremely busy and do reviews as I can. In fact, I’ve got two just about ready to go. I also stand by my assertion that intellectual and trademark properties deserve protection even if I don’t agree with them. I think you will start to see things in a different light once you are trying to turn a profit in the biz (it is kind of a process). If you think that I’ve gone to the dark side, then you should really re-evaluate what the dark side is. The people I interact with on the boards everyday are missionaries, vacation bible school teachers, donors to numerous charitable organizations, mentors and overall some of the most inspirational people I’ve ever met or only met online. Seriously, can’t we all be friends? If I’m on the dark side for who I am, then I’d rather be no other place. I love making spicy foods, and one day I want to do this for a living. Does that make me a “bad guy”?

OK, it’s been well over a month without any word from Nick or his loved ones. I’ve waited patiently as have we all and now it’s time for me to vent a little, I hope you guys don’t mind.
I really, REALLY REALLY hope that Nick is ok. I know blogging, managing a review site, and trying to live your life all at the same time is a hard thing to do. It takes time, devotion, and love. Everything that he has done has been and still is greatly appreciated by both me and the Fiery Foods Industry and I am grateful for his contribution (and everyone else that has written on the blog).
BUT, except for being hospitalized or a stroke, or something along those lines, what has happened here is kind of inexcusable. I know life takes precedence but you are telling me that he can’t take a minute or two to return a phone call, or email, or post something saying what the heck is going on? Come on. Even when I was poisoned last year I found time to shoot Joe and Linda over at The Hot Zone Online an email so they would know why I wasn’t posting and believe me, I was WAAAAAAYYYY out of it.
He has helped build a community here and made a lot of friends, but ignoring them like this is kind of like a “f-youâ€. I am hurt by it because I love coming here (even though I don’t post all the time) and felt like Nick cared about us. I hate to say it, but I think we’re all hugging a dead horse here. A week or two is fine, but a month and a week without word is just plain unprofessional and rude.
Now, if he’s been hurt and can’t post (god forbid this is the truth but I hope it is because other wise my faith in him will be ruined…not that I’m saying I hope he’s hurt, but you know what I mean) than I completely understand. I’m trying not to be insensitive and please don’t take this posting as that. But this situation is…ah, screw it, I’m done ranting.

Jon, I can’t begin to know what is going on, but if it is personal enough to have him distance himself from HSB and friends, then its a good enough reason for HIM. I went through a major depression over 10 years ago, and I stopped talking to friends, family and co-workers. I didn’t return messages and pushed people away. I don’t know if Nick is depressed, but if he is then I understand the feeling. If he isn’t then whatever the excuse is, it obviously is important enough to him.

I really feel like you do. Nick has appeared to be on AIM very much lately. I have tried to send several IMs and have gotten no response. I seriously doubt he is hurt, unless someone has stolen his identity.
Has anyone tried to contact Laura, his wife? I was wondering if he maybe his absence here has been due to any legal problems with the site. However, I feel even if it was the case there should be no reason why he couldn’t return an message or an IM.
About Depression:
2 years ago I was severely depressed after someone really important to me, left on my birthday. I was anorexic for at least a year, my attitude changed, and other things as well. I was a different person. However I still was in contact with friends and family, even though they knew something was wrong.
The HSB became a place where I could go to get away from everyday things and it took my mind off my problems. It was new to me in coming to the site, etc. It basically wasn’t work. If Nick is depressed there is a good chance that he wants to be somewhere else also. Of course this won’t include the HSB, because for Nick the HSB has been a big part of his life. I am sure he would want to get away from it.
I can only say great things about Nick. If it weren’t for Nick I definitely would have one less hobby today. In my opinion, it seems that Nick has done so many great things for this industry. I know it’s hard for us to think that he is simply walking away from it.
I hope that Nick is ok and that either him or close ones realize the importance that he has had. I know it’s a website but it seems real to me. There is nothing fake about this site really, it’s not like a chat room. It seems that then when people get together here, in real time, it is always a good time. Nick has been paramount in building a great community and I just hope that someone, being himself or close ones, realize this and that if he is walking away, at least do it with giving the community some type of closure.
I really believe we will at least here from him.

I have spoken with Nick Today and he has told me to look for the HSB to be up and running again Aug 1,,,,Besides having alot going on he was just sick of the BS That had been going on.Im sure you all know what he is talking about Things will change and HSB will once again be on top… Where it belongs As for you sayng its like an FU to friiends,,,I can asure you it is nothing like that.Any time i needed NIck all i had to do is pick up a phone and he is there.Like he and many others have said they are just tried of the BS and needed a break..No he is not in the hospital.or in a car accident he is fine so i hope Jon that your faith in him will not be ruined…lol…Just remember we all can do without the BS.Lord knows there is plenty of other sits for that
This is Great News!!! I felt Nick was ok. Sometimes we get all get drained from our passions and we need to take a break so we can reenjoy our hobbies even more!

🙂 I hardly ever bickered with anybody…. People use to bicker at my reviews, lol. I never understood it all… Maybe we all need to realize and be grateful for Nick and he work he does. When I first met Nick and talked to Nick all I saw was a love for a hobby. It never was about competition, etc. Maybe too much of that has happened and taken away from some of the fun. Remember, Nick does invests alot of time here… Think about it. If you love something, invest time, do you want to see people bicker back and forth? Especially in the hobby that you love.

According to Facebook, Nick was at the mall on Monday and taking photos of a Tabasco VW Bug and a blue truck with a big set of “blue balls” hanging from the hitch. Laura just recently had her birthday and looked like a princess in the photo.
I’m willing to bet that Nick and Laura are quite happy and healthy living their lives as it’s their right to do with no explanation to anyone. That’s what people do in the real world.
I’m also willing to bet Nick would like it if people would let him live his life and not be expected to explain his whereabouts and his mental state, etc, and that all of those taking offense to him doing so, would get a life of their own.
These are my thoughts, not yours, so if you don’t like ’em, I’ve got two words for ya….GET BENT! 😉

Well said UB. But Nick not being around isn’t the root of all the “conspiracy theories”. I think it stems from the fact that there was no common courtesy shown to the HSB communty by giving a heads up. Just a blurb, a statement that the HSB will be idling for a bit would have went a long way. Same issue as always with other things. No simple email notifications before deleting comments, or removing entire posts, or even banning someone. As always, a lot of the controversy could have been avoided with a little simple communication and courtesy.
I do agree that Nick doesn’t owe anyone an explanation on his whereabouts. That’s his business, not anyone elses. I am glad to hear however that he is healthy and living a “normal” life. That update was refreshing to read.

Will there be any Weekend of Fire coverage here at the HSB? Well I figure since the Miami Zestfest and the Houston Hot Sauce shows were cancelled, there might be some talk to the next big show here. Of course, I do believe someone referred to the Event coordinator as an idiot not too long ago, so maybe not. Well not idiot in a direct sort of way, but I do believe he was offended by the remark.
Anyway, for those that do not know, this upcoming weekend this is a show right outside the Cincinnati, Ohio area for August 2-3. This show is called the Weekend of Fire and it is located at Jungle Jim’s International Market in Fairfield, Ohio. There will be vendors in attendance from all over the country including CaJohn’s & Blair’s to name a few. Come out and support this Chilehead Event which also includes the World Championship Defcon Deathmatch after the Saturday Night show is closed. For additional Info go here:

WOF is not about Bret or Buddah, or any other single person. It is a hot sauce show. No matter who sets it up, it is worthy of coverage on any spicy food blog. Remember they have over 50 vendors selling all forms of spicy goodness. If you can, get out to the show and buy some stuff. If you are stuck reading about it like me, just follow along jealously and plan better next year! The only thing that you can say that everyone has in common is a love for spicy food.
I know Joe and Linda Levinson, and Jonathan Passow will be there so that covers one of the spicy blogs. DK, Tracy Campbell, Buddah, and many others have another spicy blog covered. Ethan will be there as well as the Creator, they both have written a few very nice pieces for the HSB, maybe they could do a little coverage for us.
I know I would appreciate it. I enjoy hearing different points of view on the same event.

You know I used to post on here pretty regularly for a while, and I kind of stopped when all the new posts stopped. When I did come back to check out the site all I usually found was bickering. I am not here now to stir up stuff, just as a disappointed chilehead that used to love this site. I don’t know what is going on with Nick and other than hoping all is well, don’t really care. What has really kept me from here is all the immature and useless infighting that I do not find on the “other” blog to which I belong. I joined both at the same time and used to post here twice as much as there, but now I am on there daily and here for a few fleeting moments once a week maybe. I hope the HSB does come back as someone said, but I also hope when it does some people can use it for what it was intended, a place to share stores, opinions, questions, etc on hot sauce. Just my opinion, but after reading 309 comments to get here I thought I deserved to give it. Hello to those of you that know me and maybe haven’t talked to me in a while, and I mean no personal offense to the rest of you.
