The wife & I are off on vacation – heading to sunny Malibu for the holidays! I owe a ton of emails to folks, so expect a whole slew of them to be sent out the moment the plane touches ground and I find a wireless hot spot. HSB postings will continue as usual, so don’t be worried about getting your daily sauce fix.
Any HSBers in the LA area, drop me a line and we can hit a few hot spots – 2 weeks gives me a lot of Mexican joints to cover…

W00t its funny your in CALI for the holidays, and im flying out to UTAH haha. I could name a slew of good food joints though, but I dont drive to Los Ang. to get mexican food. If I go there I hit up Philippes They have been a staple there for over 50 years and they supposedly invented the french dip. The are cheap, and have killer hot mustard, Like seriously I slathered my double dipped beef sandwich with bleu cheeese, with this stuff, tons of horseraddish but soooo good, my head was about to explode, I just took another bite, stood up, walked to there souvineer stand and bought a jar of it for 3 bucks. so its cheap too! Lemme know if your gonna visit orange county because then I can definately suggest some places.
I forgot to mention Philippes is a block from Olvera street, which is like the little mexico of LA so definatly mexican food there.
Nick,
I offer a must add to the trip. Canters Deli on Fairfax, just south of the Melrose district. Best freakin horseradish on the planet. I once drove Sheila and I 6 hours from Phoenix for a Corned Beef and potato pancakes. If you are near Hollywood, it is a must do. ( keep you eyes open for local famous types as well) You cannot visit LA and not do Canters !!!!
Whats a Canters Jack? send me a link or explain it because if you cant visit LA and not do Canters, im doing something horribly wrong living here and not doing Canters.

Have fun Nick and Laura! I wish I was going to Cali for the holidays. Ah, maybe I’ll get out there this summer. Have a great time!
Enjoy sunny SoCal!
[Comment ID #71806 Quote] My friend is an idiot. He was telling me how good this place was and I set my sights to go before I went to a Dodgers-Padres game at Chavez Ravine that I had tickets for (I live in San Diego). His directions were so screwed up, I never did find the place. Definitely next year.
Have fun, Nick. I’ll be in central CA eating the killer carnitas in Farmersville (Robs’ Law- the dumpiest Mexican markets usually have the best food).
Nick and Laura have fun! Stay away from those Mexican “Joints”, I here are laws against that kinda stuff.
Enjoy your Holiday.
Canters sucks, skip it. Go to El Cayote on Beverly Blvd. In fact, go with me! Someone give me Nick’s email again…. I’ve got Saturday Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday off.

Hey Nick…Hit me up if you want the skinny on Mexican food here…..Or anything else!
Thanks everyone for the well wishes, we landed safe and sound with the dogs and without many problems. Now it’s just a matter of getting used to the weather and time differences.

Parker – Give me the good bad and ugly (food wise) in the area.
Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions – two weeks is a long time to get around and check everything out and fortunately, our car is here so we don’t have to depend on rides from anyone.
Glad u landed ok. Tuesday will work out great. I send u an email back.
Did you bring your wetsuit?
Make sure you make a trip to Rosco’s Chicken and Wafffles. A true L.A. institution. Oh, and as far as Cantor’s is concerned, I agree. Try Jerry’s Famous Deli instead.
I’m about 50 miles to the east of you Nick. For those of you who do not know the LA area, that’s about 3 days by car. Seriously though, I think the best Mexican food comes from the smaller Hispanic communities in the suburbs of LA. Watch out for Paris Hilton and Britney Spears in Malibu… although I wouldn’t eat a taco from them.
Oh Yeah, one more important tip….Pack your own heat, the hottest sauce you’ll find anyplace will be Tabasco. They think it’s Hot sauce here….LOL

Was that buy a taco from or eat a taco on them
Nick, have fun. The Queen and I are going to be in Anaheim over Christmas to go to Disneyland. It is a spectacle, and a sight to be seen. Good eating

Well, I seem to be out numbered on the Canters Deli thing. It was a hot spot in the late 80’s when I had a blue mowhawk and played guitar in LA.
You know what they say, if you can remember, you weren’t partying hard enough.

Canter’s has gone way down hill from what I’m told. I’ve eaten there twice and filmed there once. The food is greasy and overpriced…but their coffee is good.
