Hawaiian Kettle Style Chips – Mango Habanero – Review

I was recently sent a 7.5 ounce bag of the new Mango Habanero Kettle Chips from Pinnacle Foods Group out of New Jersey for review. The deep pink bag with a stylistic Hula girl drawing promises “Crispy & Crunchy Tropical Heat!”

I’ve tried a lots of snacks promising heat, only to be find an over-salted chip with either BBQ or Buffalo-style seasoning, without a lot of heat. But this, my friends, definitely brings on the heat!

I’m not usually a fan of the Kettle-style chips, as I find them to be too hard and crunchy for my liking. Thankfully these were not as thick as other Kettle chips I’ve had (when I was able to find found the ones that had managed to remain flat). Sadly, a lot of them were folded in half, making them much harder/crunchier than I would have preferred. The largest chips measured about 2 inches in diameter, so it seems that smaller potatoes were used. To be fair, that seems to be a trend lately, even in my most favorite chips (Utz, I love thee!)

The first taste on the tongue is of a very pleasant sweetness (sugar is the second ingredient) with a bare hint of mango, but then comes the heat! I’ve often mentioned in our past reviews that Habaneros are my least favorite heat profile, as they sting more than they burn. However, Pinnacle Foods has managed to bring on the heat in a big way with these chips without making me put down the bag…. and if I do, I soon pick it right back up. These are very addictive – I suggest that you keep a frosty one close by!

Overall heat level:

– Kudos for the incredibly low amount of salt, while still bringing on the flavor. I would have preferred more mango, but these chips have a kick-ass heat level. I think you chileheads are gonna love the heat these bad boys bring.
