Review: Slap Ya Mama “Hot” Cajun Rub

I have tried quite a few Cajun Rubs. Each one saying it is the true authentic taste. And for the most part they were quite good. Just like how I found jerk marinades/rubs to vary widely, this so holds true to Cajun spices.

This nice little shaker definitely gets your attention. Housed in a nice canister and packing quite amount of rub in there this doozy looks great so far.

Ingredients: Salt, Red Pepper, Black Pepper, Garlic. NO MSG

The magic really shines once you open it. The aroma emanated gets the salivary glands flowing and combining this with bright granules of rub are a feast for the senses. The rub has the consistency of smooth sand and having to openings to regulate the flow is a bonus. The prep for the steaks was easy and it clung instantly to the meat.

I had just taken some nice steaks out so I was going to give this a good test.

The flavors carried over very well. But there is definitely some missing ingredients. Most notably cayenne pepper. And lots of it. This stuff packs a pretty good wallop of heat. You can feel your nostrils burn as you are cooking so be warned. It is also spicy as in the zesty kind of spicy so you get a good one two punch. Salt is listed as the main ingredient but I didn’t find it too salty. The black and red peppers were very apparent and hiding behind the heat was a pleasant amount of garlic. Overall the flavors worked well together and the heat is pretty solid. I think this would be a great addition to seafood and chicken and added a great flavor to the steaks. In addition I could also see adding this dry rub to popcorn, potatoes and even salads as well.

Again, as for the heat, well I am still feeling a pretty good tingle 10 minutes after. This would be an initiation for a rookie and keep a veteran smiling for awhile.

This will by no means replace good old Montreal Steak Spice. But it is a great product nonetheless and one of the best Cajun rubs I have tried.
