Review: Texapenos Pepper Sauces

As award winners in the 2005 & 2006 Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival, Texapenos Pepper Sauces caught my attention – afterall, two time winners have to be on to something, right?

So I ordered the Mixed Case of sauces (on the old website, new website is now up and looking great) and patiently waited for them to arrive. Once we got back from Zest Fest, the sauces were here and ready to be tested. And what better to test the sauces on then some $2 tacos?

Green Flame
Texapenos Green Flame is just what the doctor ordered! For those who like the bold taste of our Gourmet Green, but with a lot more kick. This hot pepper sauce is not for the faint of heart. Not only do we use our fresh jalapenos, but we add just enough extra kick to make this sauce bite back. It will make you kiss your momma, not to mention make you knock back a few cool ones. Use with all foods you want to spice up like all meats, enchiladas, tacos, fajitas, chips and even pizza. The uses are endless. Start fanning your Green Flame today by calling or emailing your order.

– HONORABLE MENTION
– 13TH ANNUAL AUSTIN CHRONICLE HOT SAUCE FEST 2003

Ingredients: Green Jalapenos, Onions, Vinegar, Mixed Pepper Medley, Carrots, Herbs, Select Spices, Sugar and Salt.

Green Flame: This sucker was hot! (Must be the “pepper medley”) On first taste you get the freshness of the green jalapenos, followed by the bite of the vinegar and then the searing heat of the “pepper medley” – delicious green sauce, though it is a little watery.

Gourmet Red
Texapenos Gourmet Red is a beefy pepper sauce made for the traditional “pepper head” that will add flavor and zest to any food you desire. Made with selected ingredients and many flavorful spices to give it a zesty flavor with some bold spice. Order some today. You’ll be happy you gave it a shot.

1ST PLACE 15TH ANNUAL AUSTIN CHRONICLE HOT SAUCE FEST 2005

Ingredients:
Red Jalapenos, Onions, Vinegar, Carrots, Herbs, Select Spices, Sugar and Salt.

Gourmet Red: Mmmmm…. Mild jalapeno flavor & heat. This sauce is perfect for any newb chilehead or an old veteran looking for a good all-around performer.

Conclusion:
The Gourmet Red was my favorite out of all the sauces, the Orange Flame (not pictured) is a great pure habanero sauce but did not have a whole lot of additional flavor (just habanero – which is a good thing!). The sauces are packaged in salsa like containers which can be a little confusing – but they are thin enough that if you tried to dip a chip into them you wouldn’t get much. Pour these sauces over tacos, eggs or burritos – basically anything you can find that’s not nailed down.
