“Older and wiser” is a phrase that does not apply here. As a couple of you already know, I’ve decided to make another run at the stair climb record. There is also the possibility that I’ll take a stab at the endurance record for time on a stationary bike- 85 hours! Matter of fact, I’m looking at doing these back to back- get off the stairs, rest a day and then get on the bike. To make it even better, it looks like it will be done outdoors, in August when the heat index can be expected to be over 100 F here.
There are several details to be worked out yet, funeral arrangements among them ๐ but it looks like the attempt will be made the week after JJ’s show. I’m attempting to do this in conjunction with Indiana State Fair at the Governors’ exhibit on trying to get people inspired to get in shape- IN Shape Indiana. The Governors’ office ought to be able to lend some weight to the efforts and give instant credibility. Our governor is a fitness buff and a serious chilehead himself. The idea to do it at the State Fair came from the fact that there was very little local support last year, depsite most of the charities having local connections. The Fair should be a high-visibility location that might inspire a few of the local businesses to ‘step up’ and support the local charities.
While on the subject of support, I’d like to make it clear that I in no way expect a repeat of the Step Up Auctions. The support from the hot sauce community was outstanding last year and serves to stand on its’ own. I know that there are a lot of other auctions vying for attention and would encourage support for them. Thank you all very much for the support you’ve given! I am grateful beyond words. I am filing for 501.3(c) status in order to accommodate the continued support. No word yet on when that will be finalized. While I don’t think I’ll make any great improvement on the records, I do fully expect to improve on the fundraising.
To try and prove that I really don’t have a ‘death wish’- despite appearances- I’m making the second half of the record attempt contingent upon the amount of contributions raised. I really don’t have any great desire to kill myself for nothing ๐ If there is not sufficient support, then it will only be the stairs this year.
Thanks again, all. Sigh… time to get serious again ๐
HSBers –
In order to meet or beat last years auction totals, I’m going to organize a set of auctions to run in the months just before Jim makes his attempt. If he can hit the 50k mark then he’ll be doing both the stairs and the bike. Please send an email to this address if you’d like to chip in and participate in the race to get Jim on the bike.
I’m thinking 5 auctions like last year with reserves made especially for Jim, if people are willing to participate. And in addition to the reserves, any number of special hot sauce sets made for the auctions – thoughts? ~ Nick

Jim, Jim, Jim,
First I read that you are going after your stair-climb record. Some may think its crazy, but I think its great. Then I see you want to go after the endurance time on a stationary bike. Now this is a surprise, but knowing you, it doesnt come as a total shock. But then I see its going to be done back-to-back. Now my mind is wandering. Nuts, or dedicated? Hmmm. I will still err on the side of dedication. But after the 10 seconds it took for that all to sink in, and the time to re-read it again to make sure I understood, I see yet another shocking additon. “done outdoors, in August when the heat index can be expected to be over 100 F here” Now, Im closer to thinking nuts, he HAS to be! And after re-reading that 1st paragraph again, just to make sure, it hit me. I quickly looked at the top and read “Step Up For Charity Again” by Jim Campbell. If anyone else would have written this, I may still be thinking nuts. But seeing the name Jim Campbell, I know he isnt. Just dedicated in what he believes in, and will go more then the extra mile to achieve it. And more importantly, it isnt for himself. What he does, is, and always will be, for others. Good, no EXCELLENT job Jim! I know you dont ask for it, but you deserve all the recognition and support you receive. Your acts of giving, kindness, and unselfish nature are an example to all of us to follow. You are an inspiration!
And as always, Im sure the HSB has got your back.
Jim, man, what can I say? You are a true angel on earth. The things you have done to help others in tis world amazes me! You are are a true hero and deserved to be looked upon with nothing but dignity and respect by all. I know that when my child asks me what makes a hero, I have a perfect explain to show her. Thank you for all you do to make this world a better place for myself and others.
Wow – just WOW!
You have got the entire chili-head community behind you Jim!
As always the Big Dawg family is behind you! Anything you need that I could help with let me know. Maybe we need to design a commemorative logo bottle to help raise money! God Bless Brother!
You all are too kind as usual! Still blushing. I was serious about everyone here already having done more than their fair share.
I’m thinking you’re correct ChrisK- nuts!! In fact, Nick left off the title that I sent him: “The idiot is at it again” ๐

[Comment ID #86546 Quote]
Actually, I will be. Got a lot of work to do on the final preps for the ZERO stuff today. It’s going to be a VERY painful day today. But not to fear, I will pass my personal agony on in about a month at the next “Deathmatch”, you can bank on it. ๐
Help please! There’s a couple of ways for folks to help without putting out any money- and have their contribution be no less important ๐
1) After about a zillion hours on the step mill, my music is getting a bit stale. I need some suggestions for *lively* stuff that has a beat, prefer no vocals. Examples would be bluegrass, honky tonk piano, etc. Please direct me to some stuff & I’d be forever grateful ๐ Rock examples (some with lyrics) include Tusk- Fleetwood Mac, Jungle- Guns n’ Roses, etc.
2) I’d like to offer for raffle gift sets of sauce. Anyone willing to auction off a set at their workplace or bar or social setting would receive a free bottle of sauce as a thank you.
Thanks!!

Jim,
Don’t forget that surf music !!! Lots of great instrumentals with great beats and great guitar to boot !!! Also, for rock, Joe Satriani is an amazing guitar player, no lyrics and will keep ya steppin !!! Honkytonk piano?…hmmm Pinetop Perkins comes to mind.
[Comment ID #90409 Quote]
Got a bunch of oldies aready. Was just looking for some good instrumental stuff, prefer NO vocals. Jacks’ suggestion of Pinetop Perkins led me to find a few nuggets ๐
[Comment ID #90436 Quote]
I don’t know about hot sauce, but I DO know about music, lol. You will like Pinetop, I promise.
Hmmm, Jim, you wanted “lively”?
Wonderful music like Ministry with mind-smashing beats conjoined with distorted voices like those heard at the Gates of Hades would keep you going. Just a thought. ๐
A bit of a set back here…. Talks with the governors office of physical fitness (not “mental fitness”) have revealed that they do not have the space/time for me to do both attempts at the State Fair :-/ At this moment it looks like it will just be the stairs again, pending further developments.
How was your Trip Jim, Glad to see you made it back safe… ๐
