I thought the Halloween Reserves would already come signed? Oh, on second thought, maybe he’s doing the signing and numbering in public.
Hmmm, perhaps I’m a little confused (more than usual), but is he offering the Halloween Reserve on the website or just at Peppers?
I’m sure there will be some twists to this as there has been with the last few reserves he’s put out. Guess we’ll have to wait until he decides we need to know something.
Nick – This seems more like a paid commercial ad for blair than an informational blog posting. Is this a new direction for HSB? Maybe you should consider adding a commercial section to help us get away from the rambling chat room stuff.

Well, if Blair himself would post such things on his own site, collectors could hear about it there. I think the point, and I could be worng, is that even though Blair is a manufacturer, he is also a retailer. Doe this then open the door for retailers other than SNS to advertise on the HSB?

Nick – I owned a marketing company for 25 years and have written thousands of promo pieces and ads. Believe me, terms like “for a limited time only” and ” take a chance and save 40%” are very hard core sales pitches. I’d say his own site would be best for this approach. So far as his signing party, I intend to do the same at Jungle Jims and others, so I guess I can advertise that here on HSB too, right? E.Z.

Any manufacturer/retailer is allowed to send in press releases, product information or otherwise to the HSB. The simple fact is that the HSB is online and so are the readers, so things tend to focus towards the online (sheer nature of the beast) but we’ve never excluded offline or drawn a line between online versus offline.

Blane – I have no problem with Blair or any other brand, so you’re off base on your assumption. Is HSB a level playing field for all makers? No, I don’t think so. I see a definite bias toward the brands Nick sells in his store, which makes this less a forum and more an S&S promotional site. Sorry, that’s the way it comes across.

Earl – The HSB is certainly an equal playing field for all manufacturers in the spicy foods world. How many of the last 50 product reviews were of products I sell on S&S? Less then 5. If 5/50 is a bias in your opinion, then fine, it’s a bias – but the HSB wouldn’t be here without Sweat ‘N Spice – how else does one get an endless supply of a variety sauces and in turn, Sweat ‘N Spice wouldn’t sell 1/2 the sauces we do (it enables us to find out what tastes good – as it does for any retailer that reads).
The HSB is free for anyone to read and you of all people have attested to the fact that a review (or series of review) on the HSB can lead to an increase in sales and interest in your product line. Just because we don’t sell a product on SNS doesn’t mean we won’t talk about it, review it or endorse it.
The HSB has always been open to any manufacturer or maker (information here) but if the information isn’t sent in, then we can’t post it. I post all the information I receive – that’s not a bias, it’s just being responsive to the materials sent in.
If your problem is with the variety of manufacturers or the frequency, all I can tell you is that if more manufacturers sent in press releases and/or information, there would certainly be a larger spectrum of information. And trust me, I work very hard on promoting and bringing a variety of content to the HSB.

Ummmm Earl……You couldn’t be more wrong. If you take a look at half of the reviews I have done over the last year they are not available on Sweat N Spice. In fact Nick has done quite a bit to promote other web-sites as well. Do some research and learn the facts before you make an assumption.

I understand a blog is supose to be an open forum of opinions. Well, I stand by my opinion. Reviews are nice and the ones on my product were good, but that is not the issue. It is the surrounding chatter and promotion where I see the same favorites receiving on-going exposure.
This isn’t about my product line. It is doing fine with my professional marketing approach, which is way beyond simple blog-promotion. This is about HSB remaining true to what it claims to be. Sorry if that ruffles feathers, but I would like to see this site be truely on open forum without any hint of bias or prejudice.
There is no point in continuing to beat a dead horse, so this is where I plan to leave it. Bye.

That is so true! If there is a certain manufacturer that tends to “show-up” more then another, maybe they are because they provide more information to be posted. Sure, it means they know how to “use” the system and target their main audience. Is that wrong? Maybe more will send info to Nick so that he and HSB will be swamped with information. Its also a good thing to hear what they have to say. Who wants to spend time learning all this from the endless individual manufacturers sites when its all right here? I am NOT commenting on the never-ending special bottles out there from all the manufacturers that tend to show up now. Thats a different subject.
Personally, I think Nick does an excellent job of providing information when most of it is not for his own benefit. Its for the benefit of the chilehead community! This site could be alot more strict and much of it could be censored if thats what he wanted. Remember, this is Nick’s site that he opened up and allows alot more than most would. You are pretty much free to post what you want. How many trades, purchases, business contacts, and emails have floated right under everyones nose on here? Speaking out of blogmeister jrs shoes, I think that even if Nick is benefitting from HSB, he is entitled too. Its his hard work and hours spent busting his ass so that you can come here and read, learn, bust on, chat with and play.

Ditto- How can you compete with that, well said ChrisK from the blog. Maybe I am a little simpler, not as educated as some here. But from my angle- I see some manufacturers showing up more then others because they ship Nick more items. When I receive a box full of _____ items, it’s my commitment to Nick to write about what I get. But like Anthony, I too write about sauces I found and quite like the Hot Shop reviews as well. Listen, let’s call a spade a spade- if you disagree with with how someone does business recently you have every God given right to state your opinion. That is one good thing about this blog, you can say it when you want to and how you want to. Some people will agree with you, some people won’t, and some people get highly pissed and blow their tops- that’s what I like. But when you accuse the whole system of being biased, I think you are generalizing too much and are missing the boat. I am really sorry you feel that way Earl, I am not going to blow sunshine up your a$$, there are good points and bad points to everything in life. Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad, or just not take it at all. I have met some very special people through this, something I would have never imagined I would ever do. Well…I have certainly missed a lot today. Sadly, the internet was down at my place for some time, so I was unable to join in the fun. Nick, don’t take my questions offensively, please. They are simply questions, to satisfy my own curiosity, and that of any other person that might wonder the same thing. Enquiring minds want to know.
Sadly, there is bias here on the blog. Whether we want to admit it or not, every last one of us is biased in one way or another. Take some of the reviewers for instance. One of them doesn’t like fruity sauces…so why have those people review fruity sauces? There’s sauces that are reviewed on here all the time that are private label. Yet, I know of one private label that will not be reviewed unless the words “Manufactured by CaJohn” are included. Though the other reviews of private labels may be out of pure ignorance, but ignorance in my opinion is not a valid excuse, especially when the manufacturer states, and I quote, “it’s his sauce”. Nobody whined and complained when the review of the HSU sauce was done regarding this subject.
********NEWS FLASH********
The sauce contained in the HSU bottle is the same sauce it is in Cape Fear Pepper Company’s Red Savina sauce…which is manufactured by CaJon for Cape Fear Pepper Company, and CaJohn will stand by that as he has on severel other occasions. So what has happened here is that a CFPC sauce was reviewed without stating who manufactures it, and still, the credit won’t be given to CFPC for the two sauces they currently offer under their name and logo. Sounds a little biased to me, but that’s my opinion and as someone already stated on here, if you don’t like what people have to say, don’t read it. Granted this isn’t necessarily a business, but in the biz world, this would be considered anti-trust. To be unbiased, you’d have to treat all things of a same class…the same. Once you cross the line for one, you have to do it for all, knowingly or not. There’s some serious double standards, but this isn’t my blog, I just ask questions and point things out. Nick, I know you’re free to do as you please with this site, and please continue to do so. I enjoy the site, but the question is…how can you say that this site is truly unbiased when there are double standards left and right. How can you say that this site portrays the truth about things when I have the e-mail from you stating that I won the first caption this contest, offered me a choice in prizes, then post that it was a tie between DK and I? That’s a little far from the truth here (and I don’t mean Jersey Boyz Jerky Truth). Sorry man, I like you, but I have to admit that you definately lost some credibility with me when you posted an outright lie. I’ll be back sometime tomorrow to follow up on this. Post away boys.

Ryan – As usual, your honesty is refreshing, but as you said “ignorance in my opinion is not a valid excuse” and yet again, as with many things you don’t know the whole story before firing off your mouth (well, keyboard).
First, not that you would know, but there is a review for a CPFC sauce in the queue. How is it bias to want to readers to know everything about a sauce? Just because the review said “Manufactured by CaJohn” is not a bias, that’s just letting the reader know who makes it – in case they eat it. You and I both know that 9 out of 10 readers on the HSB will still buy the bottle just to put it into their collection. The only other CPFC review ever submitted was lost when the DB went down and I requested the reviewer re-send it. Once again, it’s not bias not to post about something if it’s not sent in.
Second, the caption this prize? What? Did you read the post? “Because of the close race the winners are going to get prizes of equal value.” I was being nice, man, I gave you the choice between prizes as I knew you were having Defcon issues and might appreciate another prize (of equal value) more. So I gave you the choice (as the winner with 23 votes) and DK got the remaining prize (with 22 votes). How can you hold something like that against me or say I “posted an outright lie”?

Who pays to have their ad on the side of the blog and who is featured have nothing to do with one another. It’s all dependant on what is sent in to be reviewed. Just so happens some folks send in one or more of every single one of their products and we review each item sent in.
*edit* I’m assuming your referring to the influx of Nando’s reviews – well, like I said above it’s all dependant on what’s sent in – so every so often there will be a big *push* of reviews towards one company or another (remeber all the TorchBearer reviews?).

Wow 🙂 Great thread here! I guess the sum of my lengthy post here will be “it’s a free country” for those that want the ‘Readers Digest’ version.
I can personally attest to the fact that there is no ‘quid pro-quo’ on advertising and reviews. I’ve advertised for awhile now and will continue to do so for as far into the future as I can see because I like and support what is going on here. At any point I *don’t* like it, I’m free to leave and take my ad dollars with me. Pretty simple 🙂
There are about a zillion hotsauce makers out there (meaning manufacturers and private labelers). Considering all of them, I think that Nick is doing a pretty good job of giving all equal treatment. It’s a simple matter of fact that some producers do more note worthy stuff and hence get ‘more press’. Bill Gates gets more notice than I do in the media and, while jealous, I don’t begrudge him that. He just simply does more stuff that gets attention 😉 I’m certainly free to try and match him or do better.
Having met Ryan (and the lovely Mrs) I can vouch that there isn’t any ‘hate’ or ‘pent up anger’- just a somewhat refreshing saying it like he sees it. Again, we’re all free to do the same.
The HSB is what the HSB is- as with the making of Blairs, CaJohns or EZ’s sauces, folks that feel like they can do a better (or less biased) job are free to do so 🙂 I sincerely wish them the best of luck and will happily support them in their efforts also.

The great thing, is I have and will continue to speak with those outside this blog, the great thing is they have there opions and I respect that, I don’t expect people to understand me, but what I do understand is you attack peoples values, sites and ethics. It dosn’t take cojones to put someone down for what they believe, maybe I wouldn’t give you sh’t so much if I thought you where doing it in a tactful way or if you did not have a ajenda…. Well, had my breakfast (cigs and coffee 😀 ) and have to say this has been a delightful read.
Nick, I got my info from one of the people that wrote up a review on the CFPC sauce over the phone. I can’t resist a mystery and when there’s something fishy going on that is brought to my attention, I do what I can to figure it out. Its just my nature. I find that most often that when I let out what I know, more information usually comes out. There’s 3 sides to every story – your side, my side, and the truth (so to speak, don’t necessarily mean YOUR side). In order to find the real truth, some times you have to push a few buttons. Anyway, if I was misinformed, it was because the my sources have been misguided in some way. And I preger the term assumption makes an ass out of you, and umption (I find it to be unfair that assume makes an ass out of both parties).
I realize that what you did regarding the caption this contest was a nice thing to do, and don’t get me wrong, I am appreciative of what you’ve done. I’m just one of those people that sees honesty as being black and white with no gray area. If its not the absolute truth, well, its gotta be the other. As I said before, I like you, but we all do things that somebody (whether its only me or not) is going to disagree with.
So yeah, Blane… I know you love this stuff and I’m happy to oblige. But who’s income and family am I hurting? The one thing you need to realize is that everyone (and this has been beaten to death here) has there own opinion/point of view. What you consider to be tasteful may or may not be the same as others. So this holier than thou approach you seem to take only drops you down to my level (yes, DOWN to my level in aspect of public opinion, but that is role I have chosen). Kepp it up man, its great. It does get a little lonely down here at times (on the blog that is, outside the blog its a frick’n party). There are many on here that put on a show to save face, then off the blog its a free-for-all. I respect those that take the time to write or call me, so I don’t give out all info about my sources (no good reporter does) so that they’ll keep telling me things. I investigate, or use what info is volunteered. So if anyone’s income or family is being hurt, it is only being hurt by themselves. I’m just the messenger 😀

ZF introduced me to some awesome people and I know the reviews have definately helped spread the word on us. So I love it here and can’t say anything wrong.

What zest fest were you at, I didn’t hear any smack about anyone at all, all i saw and heard was a bunch of people having a great time with a great bunch of people.
Unfortunately, pointing out that you were there when it was being done means (I think) that you were a part of it, and this, to me, is disappointing. There is no need to trash others. It doesn’t get anyone anywhere, it only causes animosity, were you trashing me (i wouldn’t care), was someone trashing Heather? I would care greatly, were you making fun of the fat people? If so then it was me Ah-ha!! however, the people i met were really good warm people, of which Arizona Jack, Loco Luna Brian, eman, cheffy, the d00d from peri peri the two guys from blairs all really stand out. There were others, but these were some of the people that didn’t seem to have an agenda (i know a couple were working, but they didnt feel like they were working)
Anyways, reading this thread is probably why I have slowed to a crawl posting, it seems every post is filled with hatered, bashing or one upman ship in one form of another. If you want to get noticed, advertise, and don’t stop. People will be talking about all you smaller guys like they do Blair’s and Cajohns soon, trust me on this. If you can’t afford it, quit smoking, stop drinking, put your monies where your mouths are and step up to forge your own destiny, and never stop believing in yourselves.

I have been a blogger on guitar sites and poker sites for a lot longer than I have been here. I cant spell so I’ll just say ” klicks” are the norm. The new guy always gets trashed, it’s sort of a “rites” thing, a hazing, no problem here on my end. It’s part of the process.
BUT, I must add, everybody has been friendly, my differances have been face to face and discussed like intelligent adults, but I know the s$#it floats to the top.
I will be the first to admit that I am suffering from growing pains. Big growing pains. Ebay is one thing, but trying to make a move national is like taking the training wheels off. You are going to hurt yourself a few time till you get it right. Ever had that recipe perfect for a 3 gallon batch for friends and then get a 20 case combined order? It sucks, especially when the front page on HSB is you !!!!!
I have made every attempt to play nice, thats my style, and will always be. I ( we at PPP) have been very fortunate to have some of the big doods in this industry take us under wing and help, for that we will be forever grateful, no names, you know who you are.
The freakin butt stoopid comment this is only for SNS inventory sellers is outrageous. Nick has bought from me more than any blogger ( off ebay). Nick has taken alot of crap that I feel is undeserved and out of line. I am not kissing a$$, I dont do that, but facts are facts. I got my 1st CFPC, Mild to Wild ( Jim), Defcon, etc off this blog. it works both ways. One day soon, when I am up to caliber,I hope to be part of Nicks store, but untill then, I’ll keep trying.
There are so many great people here, when I see all of you at FF, I want to party and have a great time, not gossip and play who can trash talk or be the biggest ass kisser.
Just me rambling tonight, the trash talk comment got me going because I have had enough of second hand gossip. I play heads up poker, and I want heads up talk. Too much to ask?

AKA, talking behind others’ backs. If someone has a problem with me, why not tell me directly? If someone can’t, that either means they must grow a spine, or are just feeding their own malnourished ego…or perhaps both. 😀 This whole “did you hear what he said, she said” or starting rumors about someone for your own gain, or perhaps malicious or defamatory intent is nothing more than laughable at best. I fulfilled my mission in Dallas, I had a great time, drank many beers with many good folks, and put a lot of faces to names I have spoken to on-line for some time. If certain people came down with personal agendas, wanting to make their personal little “Peyton Place” a little more meaningful in their pseudo-world, complete with the twisted enjoyment of sinking and twisting shafts into other peoples backs while they’re not around, go right ahead, it must make those that do it proud in their enigmatic successes. Not directed at you, not directed at anyone. Not all my info comes from my own experience and digging, but a lot from other sources. You guys need to relax. We’ve all been through high school. Some things change as we get older, others don’t. Anytime you’re a part of a group, clique, band, cult, etc… gossip is a reality we all have to deal with. There are very few people on that I’m aware of that either don’t spread it, or don’t receive it. Now there’s people in a tizzy because people might be talking about them. Well, if you put yourself in the spot light, make yourself stand out from a crowd, do anything different, speak differently, look “strange” or speak your mind that goes against the popular opinion, you’re gonna be talked about. Might be good, might be bad. The question is, does it really matter? Some cases yes, but most of the time, its stupid banter. I can’t believe this is still going on. And I just love how the Johnny come latelys out there have to announce “I just read this whole thread…” and then add their two cents. This thread was dead until that started happening. Aren’t there more important things than this going on right now? I will not live, I am now in the puking stage of this crap. and to add my 2 cents cus i just read this whole thread, it was not JUST bloggers talking smack, it was other people that had booths there. most of what I heard was just plain frustration at how the show was on trade day or how tired and hung over people were or just making fun of others, i for one will stand up and say I to this day can not stand a particular blogger and yes I talked a whole hell of a lot smack and it made me feel better 😀 I also gave craedit where credit was due to this blogger.
