New York Joe’s Onions – Mild
Hey folks. John Scrovak here. I’m back. I know y’all missed me last week, and I apologize, but I had to take care of some things. To make a long story short, I was back in court because the DA said they couldn’t find the hooker’s body, which would nullify my plea deal. Good news is I’m back, though, so here’s a Scroturday review of New York Joe’s Mild Onions, which took a third place 2012 Scovie in the relish category.
Ingredients:
Onions, Tomato Puree (water, tomato paste), Olive Oil, Salt, Vinegar, Citric Acid, Spices
Appearance:
I’m not sure what to think. This one’s a first for me – it’s a jar of onions. Opening the jar, it smelled interesting. I’m trying to find another word to define that smell, but it eludes me. Interesting will have to suffice, for now. How I’ll describe it is this – a hot dog cart in front of an Italian restaurant on 5th avenue, NYC. That’s what it smells like, and I think that may be the smell New York Joe was going for. As for flavor and consistency, the onions taste like they were flash boiled to just the right consistency and dropped in a decent spaghetti sauce. The combination of these to flavors gives me a taste I would gladly throw on a hot dog, a bratwurst, hell you could even throw this under some mozzarella and use it as a pizza sauce. I would. And I probably will.

There’s no heat to this at all. And when I say none, I mean it’s got less of a kick than KC Masterpiece barbecue sauce. And that’s saying something. Unfortunately, we don’t have a less than 0 heat level, so I’ll have to go with Mild. In the flavor department, I’m giving it a nice. It’s a delicious product, but I would have personally thickened the sauce the onions are in.
